What the he'll is this? It's been around my whole life. My father claims his uncle took it from japan during ww2. It's rough tip is broken off and the sheath is fucked up due to my father throwing it around as a kid. It stands about 7 feet tall with the blade being about 3 foot. I could never figure out what it is. I'll dump more pics.

It's a blade on a stick. One of the resident weaboos could probably tell you more.
>>
>>32021457
Looks like a naginata. It's a Japanese polearm, similar to a glaive.

Son, thats a real blade, and likely quite valuable. Don't dick around with it, and show it to an expert. This is a 4 digits blade at least, depending on the signature it can easily be 5 digit $ blade.
Also your fathers fucking up the sheet can easily cost you a couple grand in lost value, so punch him in the face next time you see him.
>>
>>32021599
P.S. if I ever find out it was you nigger who damaged the tip, I'm gonna castrate you myself.

Congratulations, bubbaded a valuable blade into a piece of junk do to mistreatment and neglect.
I hope it is some fucking famous Bizen signature and you can bite your own ass forever for all the money you will never make.
>>
>>32021650
I just threw it back up on the shelf in the basement loll. Just wanted to know what the he'll it was. Also what does the signature mean?
>>
>>32021599
This.

its a naginata, they are collectable, and from my (admittedly very limited) knowledge of oriental arms auctions, can be valuable. (my area of interest is western arms. so cant say a lot)

What I can say is, do not fuck about with it. DO NOT POLISH IT (doing so can remove patina and reduce value), and instead get these photos to an auction house or simlar place, say you are considering selling it - even if you arent - and ask for thier appraisal. They will be better-placed to ID its date of manufacture, possibly any markings, and similar details.

these sort of things are easily 4 figure price tags, often 5 figure. Some may be 6 figure pricetags, but dont get your hopes up there - its probably worth a thousand or two. but it could be a LOT more.

>Also what does the signature mean?
What smith made it, if it is a famous smith or from a prestigious school, the blade can become ridiculously valuable. Even if the smith is not famous, but the blade is historic and in a GOOD condition, including the sheath, it still can score decent at any weapons auction.
But fucked like it is you can be happy if you score $300 at ebay.
>>
>>32021682

Signature on a piece like that indicates whether a master or a famous master made it. It's likely an antique, family heirloom and valuable even with that fucked up tip. Japanese smiths signed and dated their blades, there's whole schools of study on just the history of these blades and your's is a fine example.

Your dad couldn't have known but he's a fucking idiot for playing Leonidas with it.
>>
>>32021686

looking at the damage again in >>32021523, seriously dont get your hopes up on the value. that is pretty nasty damage, and will drop value by a not insignificant amount.

but it is still collectable, and it appears to be mostly intact.

Dont try to repair it yourself. These sort of things can be fixed, but not by the average cack-handed DIY'er.
>>
Well from what I was told it came from the imperial guard... Can anyone give me a timeframe on it? Did come over during ww2. I also hate to make you guys ever more upset. But there is some masking tape residue on the sheath lol.

what if the handle is fucked?

my grandpa brought back a few swords, one of which was given to my mother, and it's a short-sword, flat black in color. the shark skin or whatever sea creature pelt and wood + thread grip is fucked though.

it does have some jap characters on the tang.

>friend of mine buys a flee market tanto for $180
>sells the menuki for $2500
>sells the blade for $23k
>if it would have been complete and good, it would have easily scored $50k
The blade is the important part, but intact and complete period fittings can double the price. However, it is easy to fuck up a japanese blade for good.

The jp characters on the tang are the smiths signature, sometimes with comments on the blades character, etc. The polearm will have similar moonrunes on its tang. Blade and fittings as other anons have said, are the expensive parts, scabbards/and handles much less so. Would be worth sending an email to somebody like Fred Lohman in Oregon with actual decent daylight photos of the pieces. He's a restoration guy but can put you on the right track. Even shitty Meiji era and later Shin Gunto are worth decent amounts these days.
Great heirlooms though and you guys should really look at getting them appraised (by a jap sword professional)

I feel you man, grandma pawned all of my gramps stuff without telling any of the rest of the family. It really hurts to think of where his collection might of ended up. Bubba chopping kindling with a civil war saber and whatnot.
>>
>>32022232
My best heartbreakers are a Hizen school Katana put to the belt grinder by their teenage son, thats forty grand down the drains.

And a complete set of early Edo period armor of the finest quality ruined. Some family inherited it from gramps, mom discards the chests because too bulky (finest laquerware, with the family mon on it) and the dumb slut of a daughter sells the priced Kabuto for two grand to pay for a boob job.
