The value of rouble RELATIVE to the dollar fell about twofold in the end of 2014, so russian dollar-denominated GDP also was kinda halved, but GDP in roubles/PPP stayed almost the same, which the only thing relevant in this case, because Russia pays for its military products in roubles.

You may have forgotten that Russia has had almost no industrial capacity outside of armaments and farm equipment. The life and death of their quality of life is dependent on oil and natural gas since the Wall came down and they can't suck the former Satellite States and Warsaw Pact allies dry.

People in America get this idea that Russia is pathetic because they'd have no chance at defeating the US in conventional war, which is true. but the US is currently the world's only true superpower. compare another country's military to the US military, of course they'll come up short, but they would by no means be a pushover for ANY other nation in the world, including China or the combined EU.

Russia has basically no industry left aside agriculture and weapons. The biggest problem is while the industry's there, the research money isn't.

Research is almost never profitable until it turns into something manufacturable. Until that point it requires investors to sit on their thumbs and write blank cheques to scientists and engineers until something usable to industry is produced.

Russia is broke and it's exactly the reason why on complicated weapons, especially naval and airforce weapons they're decades behind.
