If I am in a situation where a gun cannot be used, another ranged weapon such as a longbow or crossbow would still be preferred. Fuck being honorable and noble. Being alive, and the other person being dead, is more important.

Can confirm swords are not for fags. Swords win wars. Swords are for free born men of high status. A vilano (peasant) can have an axe, might even know how to use it, but no peasant is going to be trained to use a sword. Historical texts of medieval combat where written about swords, spears, and daggers, not axes. Axe and or mace is a footman's weapon. A knight has a sword and you better fucking respect the blade. Axes and maces are specialized anti armor weapons, not comparable to swords to begin with. Axes saw their most use by vikings and even then they prefered spears, maces were only popular when full body armor was.

I understand that people like to imagine they're so much more intelligent and know everything better than people in the past, but... you don't.

The sword is lethal, and it gained its position as the preferred weapon for a span of three thousand years, by being the best there is. These people may not have known as much as we do about science or geography or the likes, but they knew what worked in warfare where their life was on the line - unlike people today playing a video game, they learnt through the cold facts of reality. And there, the sword was the preferred weapon because they work.

axes do not have a fraction of the capability, they are less portable, they are less adaptable, they have severe disadvantages in fighting - a far smaller cutting area, inability to use false edge cuts, inability to make draw-cuts, severely limited use of the thrust, etc.

Maces are worse. they excel in a brief period from about 1400-1600, when full plate is being used, solely because they work very slightly better than swords to deliver injury through plate. To do so they sacrifice reach - most maces are at best 60cm long, a 50cm reach in the hand, Compared to even the smallest single-handed swords of the same period, with blades 72cm+, they put the user at a disadvantage. They completely lose the ability to thrust with a point, and all cutting capability is removed, for the ability to have a slightly better chance of putting force into armour - and that is not an assured action, plate will deflect most mace impacts, just as it will deflect sword or axe blows.

Swords were used for 3000 years because they are lethal against unarmoured targets, they are easily stored, they have a huge range of fighting methods, and they are brutally efficient. That is the reality of what swords were. our ancestors were not stupid.

Swords were the medieval/early modern equivalent of handguns, in that they were backup weapons and typically only carried in the first place by high-status individuals. The only area where swords enjoyed a distinct advantage over spears was for certain limited instances of quasi-independent action on the battlefield, like how the dopnelsoldner were tasked with protecting the flanks of the pike formations.

A sword is never the best choice you could get, but it's always good whatever the context is, and that's why it's the weapon that everybody will carry if they can, be it on a battlefield or in a civilian context.

You can't always haul around the best weapon there is, this isn't a video game. Nonetheless, you don't always have to choose between one or the other: you don't choose polearm or sword, you take both, that's why the sword is a sidearm after all, because it's a weapon you can have in supplement of a main weapon (be it a missile weapon or a long weapon).

Training without masks like that is perfectly safe, unless you're doing something specific like a poke to the face. Where masks come in is the moment you're either learning a new technique, and could get it wrong, or sparring where its not organised.

I personally vastly prefer to do first stages of practice without a mask, so I've got better spatial awareness of where footwork is going. Mostly because my footwork is atrocious.
