What the fuck is this thing? An SMG? An Assault Rifle? Seems like a weird grey area.

Almost an assault rifle.
I'd say it's a pistol caliber carbine though...
It's a pdw from before the concept existed
pure sex

This. Compact, packs more of a punch than a pistol cartridge but less than 5.56 or 7.62x39, not intended for use on the front lines, issued to armor or artillery crews and second-line support personnel, much shorter barrel than the standard-issue rifle of the time...

.30 Carbine was developed as a carbine cartridge, not a pistol cartridge. It was developed from a rifle cartridge too btw.
>>31996607
This. It wasn't meant for offensive use.
Its a famas
>>31996552
That's an M1 carbine.
>>31996552
As others have said in this thread, its a pistol caliber carbine. I don't view .30 carbine as a rifle cartridge, partially arbitrarily as it can't reliably hit at 400m, and partially because you can chamber a real pistol, not what the ATF calls a "pistol" in .30 carbine.
Why do I want a Bullpup M2?

You'd have to redesign the receiver, unless you want brass slicing up the side of your face.
pistol caliber carbine
>>31997464
You could probably just use a deflector
>>31997408
You can also chamber a real pistol in 45-70 what is later made to fit it is not what it is made as it is a rifle round.

Yeah, that's because weapons are designed to fill a specific need, not to fit neatly under a specific archetype label.
The best category in relatively common use that describes it is "Personal Defense Weapon" which usually refers either to SBRs with very short OAL or other firearms with have distinctly less power than a rifle or carbine but more than a pistol (and a flatter trajectory) and are intended for use by rear echelon troops or vehicle crews.

Self-loading carbine, no need to think much
>>31996552
The M2 Carbine just barely doesn't meet the definition of assault rifle in that it's cartridge is only effective out to 200 m instead of the 400 m requirement.
>>31998967
This. We draw categories around similar firearms. Sometimes the criteria are arbitrary. We don't design firearms to fit into categories.
>>31998967
This. It's essentially a PDW in terms of purpose/issue, but other qualities muddy the waters.

What's an assault rifle locked to semiautomatic? Patrol rifle? Carbine?
>>31996669
So that makes all pdws just... Carbines
>>31996552
I would rather use a Thompson
>inb4 "wah its heavy"
>>31999814
I would rather use a Browning M2.
>>31998250
how many reliable, self loading and semi-auto 45-70's are there? None. Just a handfull of revolvers and single shots
>>31996552
someone on gunbroker would describe that damage as "minimal" and "adds character"
>>31999814

ftfy
Magnum pistol caliber carbine. A .327 Federal out of a similar length barrel has similar performance if Ballistics by the Inch is to be believed.
