7 mag is OK, but, like so many cartridges from the 1950s and 60s, it has a belt, which is a nuisance.

Why so? I've never had any problems with the belt since the only 7mm Rem Mag I have is my Remington 700.

Because fudds suck at shooting so they need a huge cartridge to take down a rabbit.

Now for my serious answer, better bullet technology like higher BC and better expansion is making the huge bullet/magnum calibers obsolete when compared to their lighter recoiling and less expensive counterparts.

Because typical gun owners are getting progressively less concerned with dropping 500lb elk on the spot, and more concerned with magdumping into home invaders or government death squads.
You can argue whether that's a good or bad thing, but can't argue that an AR in 5.56 and a bolt rifle in .300 WinMag only really fit one of these applications each.

An AR is a pretty good varmint gun for anything from raccoons to big hogs.

I also think people are just transitioning with the times in that an AR-15 is the hot new thing to have because they can be had for $500 which is fairly cheap today. They have become the cheap surplus guns with cheap ammunition that mosins and enfields were.

This pretty much. I'd love to hunt deer but I live in a tiny apartment and have no way to retrieve any kill I would make for butchering.
