How does /k/ like the Mini 14?
I'm looking into getting one as my first semi-auto since it fires the light and common .223 cartridge and it looks and feels like the surplus bolt actions I like and currently own.
I've heard the accuracy problems were sort of fixed with the 580 series. Are there any other issues I should know about?
I own one and it is my favorite

Is the choate handguard any good?
I hear the mini 14 gas system has overheating problems, so while I'd prefer the looks of the wood stock it looks like the choate one would be better for its health.
Also where do I get a brown one? All the ones I've seen are black.

How's the accuracy?
I have an ancient one and I can hit steel at 100 yards with the iron sights on it. The accuracy is fine. Just make sure you get good magazines. I had a bad one and it kept double feeding rounds.

I'm stuck in California so I only have access to 10 round max ones right now. Are those more reliable than the larger ones which I hear have problems? Or does reliability depend on who is making the mags?

I love my handguard. Not sure if it really adds much cooling, but makes it look more traditional to me

How did they get the bayonet lug on the barrel?
I thought only the government versions had those and that clearly is not one if them.

Only buy ruger mags. Back in the day they only made 5, 20 and 30, but they now make 10. You may get lucky on aftermarket mags, but they'll most likely suck.
With a reliable mag, the gun will run flawlessly.

Tapco Gen 2 mags work well too. Promags are still crap though.

Pre series 580's are 4 MOA and string like crazy without the accustrut mod
Post series 580's can get dialed down to 2-3 MOA with good quality ammo.

Get a mini 30
Garbage
>>31976797
I have wanted one, but I cant justify the retail price when ARs are so cheap.
>>31976797
I love mine, but I should have bought an AR first. Since this is your first semi, I think it'd be a safer bet to go with the ar.
>Cheaper mags
>can shoot bimetal without worrying
>easily add tacticool shit if that's your thing
All that in mind, if you ever have the spare cash you won't regret the mini

I live in california. There are functionally no advantages compared to the AR's we can get.
Postan the one I made.
>>31978508
You still have a few weeks where you could pick up a bullet buttoned AR-15. There is nothing wrong with a mini-14 if thats what you want.
>>31979221
I don't want to register any more than I have to.
Stupid. They're overpriced, require overpriced magazines, and they have a smaller aftermarket. Get an AR.

Does anyone make an AR lower reciever that doesn't require the faggy buffer tube and allows you to attach a grip like a traditional rifle?
>>31979349
Ares SCR, but that's kind of a specially-designed rifle
>>31979349
Yea the Ares scr. Kinda weird ergonomics though imo. But if you want a feel like a traditional rifle there you go
>>31979349
I wouldn't mind attaching a stock like this to the lower reciever
>>31977540
It's a GB model, which is a police version of the AC556
>>31980914
But the front sight is all the way at the front, not on the bayonet lug.

All rifles purchased in CA since 2014 are already registered. CA has had a rifle registry since then. Nothing wrong with a new mini though.

I have one, and can relate to the overheating
It gets unreasonably hot after 2-3 20 round mags
Other than that the M1 style action is fantastic

seckse

I think he means he doesn't want to register it as an "Assault Weapon." All bullet-buttoned AR's will need to be. There's a bunch of stipulations once you do.
Anyone know if a 180 series stock will fit a 580 series Mini?

I heard that got discontinued.
Please all anons check their Yelp page. If you read it you will see it is under new management and I'm 95% sure the new management is behind this post. I went in there a few months ago and the autism was unbearable, never went back.

People post Mini 14 threads all the time, the gun has been out for decades.

Oh shit I'm sorry man.
If you want one go for it, fantastic firearm. My sight adjustment screws walked out on me but that was probably my own negligence. But keep an eye out anyhow
