It's a anti magnetic paste, the intent was to prevent magnetic shaped charges being placed onto the side of the tank. It was applied with a spatula like grouting compound.

Problem was the Germans were the only ones to have these type of mines and the allies never really developed any of their own, due to the maintenance issues of the zemmerite and the time it took to add is was dropped in I want to say 44ish

There was this odd paranoia that the Germans had that caused them to protect their vehicles from their own weapons. They were really the only ones to use magnetic mines. The Russians never really used them.

They may have in small numbers. I like to believe zimmerit was developed due to German over-engineering. They probably expected their enemy to occasionally capture German weapons and use those against them. The Soviets used plenty of captured panzerfausts towards the end of the war if I'm not mistaken.

modern composite armor causes any standard AT rounds to simply shatter, and is designed to fuck with shaped charges, which means no AT grenades or bazookas are going to be that effective either. It would annihilate any tank in its range.

That said you could probably still shoot the tracks off with regular AT guns, giving you a mobility kill if you managed to get a shot in before it wrecked you.

A successful and accurate divebomb air strike might have a chance at destroying it.
>>
>>31976621
1/16?
>>
>>31976651

It would do well like the KV-2 did well when it held off an entire tank company on its own, but it'd be hard-pressed to change the course of the war, and still be vulnerable to AT mines.
>>
>>31976777

Leopard I wouldn't help that much as it's still vulnerable to the 75, the 88 already goes through everything the allies had like butter, and it would be yet another class of tank whose logistical needs were entierly different from every other tank. For most intents and purposes, it would be like a German Hellcat.
>>
>>31984184
>KV-2 did well when it held off an entire tank company on its own
are you sure you didn't mean KV-1?
KV-2 seems unlikely with that slow loading time mainly HE rounds instead of AP. Its also a howitzer, and its not that easy to hit tanks with indirect fire.

>When German troops saw an armoured formation including the unusual looking machines noisily making their way toward them, they retreated back to their starting positions. It was then decided to pull the tanks back to keep their nature secret.

>Even though the tanks' speed was very slow (7 km/h (4.3 mph)), their armour was able to withstand small arms fire. In the second half of September, a battalion was formed equipped with NI tanks. In one episode, the tanks entered a village occupied by German troops and while under fire were able to tow away 24 German guns.

Err, am I missing something? How does that camo pattern work?

Like, the white part only works if you're looking at it from a lower angle so it's lost in the sky, and the green part only works if you're looking from up above and it's against grassy/forest backdrop.

As it is, if you're approximately at the same level (which would be almost always if it's a tank engagement), you get the worst of both worlds because even if one colour is perfect camo, the other colour would be really visible.
>>
>>31984816
It disrupts the silhouette. I'm not sure how effective it is, but it has fooled me at first glance- which does make the difference in tank engagements.

>>
>>31984816
when tanks are engaged in cocmbat they usually do it from behind hills at first, to soften the enemy, and only then charge, when popping behind a hill its importent to keep the element of surprise, this is why antenas are kept folded during combat.
the under part of the gun will be the first visible thing and will give the enemy a head start on where the tank is gonna pop up.

They wrecked the brits in burma.

Great thing about jap tanks is they were so light they cold cross improvised log bridges, meaning you could get them to places that no one else could get tanks.

For 1939, Japanese tanks were excellent. Those same designs obviously dont hold up to later allied designs, and all their more decent designs were kept back on the mainland for defense. The 1943 Chi-Nu is essentially a Pz.IV equivalent, but with a much better gun (closer to the 85mm of the T-34/85) and would likely blow a regular Sherman out of the water.

Ha-go's had awful suspension and gave a VERY uncomfortable ride. The asbestos lining was partially there to protect the crew during extreme throwing around.
They're pretty inferior to the Chi-Nu. worse armor, much worse gun.

They didn't. Japanese infantry did that.
>>
>>31994332
of course, in China you dont need big guns, The heaviest tank they had was the Vickers 6-ton and maybe a capture Chi-Ha or Ha-Go.
A bigger gun would be more for taking out shermans or lees. Could penetrate 65mm at 1000m as compared to the 37mm on the Ha-Go and later Chi-Ha's only penetrating 43mm at 500m.

>c. Texture. Closely related to tone, texture refers to the ability of an object to reflect, absorb, or diffuse light. It may be defined as the relative smoothness or roughness of the surface. A rough surface, such as a field of grass, reflects little light and casts many shadows on itself. Consequently, it appears very dark to the eye or on a photograph. A smooth surface, such as an airstrip, even though it might be painted the same color as the surrounding terrain would show up as a lighter tone on a photograph. Very smooth, almost textureless surfaces reflect both natural and artificial light. This is known as shine, one of the most revealing breaches of camouflage discipline. Every effort must be made to eliminate the shine from smooth surfaces, including windshields, headlights, lenses of glasses, boots, even skin. Covering these surfaces with rough-textured materials or mud will reduce or eliminate the reflection of light. Texturing materials can be applied to smooth paved surfaces to help them blend with the surrounding ground and reduce tonal contrasts.

>comparing modern texture cammo to WWII zimmirite

Fucking seriously? Zimmerite has literally NOTHING to do with cammo dipshit, this textured surfaces cammo meme is a new thing, the shit was for magnetic mines period,

>Zimmerit was a paste-like coating used on mid- and late-war German armored fighting vehicles during World War II. It was used to produce a hard layer covering the metal armor of the vehicle, providing enough separation that magnetically attached anti-tank mines would fail to stick to the vehicle, although Germany was the only country to use magnetic anti-tank mines in numbers. Zimmerit was often left off late-war vehicles due to the unfounded concern that it could catch on fire when hit.[1] It was developed by the German company Chemische Werke Zimmer AG.
