It's not a bad idea if you just want more fuel for ferrying between bases, etc - drop tanks add quite a bit of drag, having them internally eliminates that. There might be a niche role they could have in combat (extended limited strike - oxymoron much?), but I don't see them being used as such.

If the Russians put missiles on 1 bay and fuel tanks on another bay and carry drop tanks on external pylons, it can travel from Russia then drop external fuel tanks over Germany and release missiles over France, the missiles can hit Britain. And America will never know what hit them.
