So /k/ what's your verdict or thoughts on soldiers or a type of combat unit that's heavily armored and armed with "heavy" weaponry like LMGs?

Their purpose is/would be to provide vanguard protection, heavy squad fire and even room clearing.
>>
>>31956638
Rendered entirely impotent by explosives. Over pressure does not care how heavily armored you are.
>>
It doesn't happen for a reason
>>
>>31956638
Without mechanical assistance endurance takes a fucking nose dive with gear that heavy. expect 15-30 minutes of combat effectiveness at best.
>>
>>31956638

room clearing seems to be the only real reason to be heavily armored. maybe if soldiers had quick access to it, it would make sense in the field because screw walking for miles in a glorified EOD suit.
>>
>>31956671
Its a problem looking for a solution.

If you get to the point where the pointman needs an eod suit, the task is better served with a satchel charge though the window.

See: fallujah.
>>
>>31956662
Not entirely true. The EOD armor is specifically designed to reduce overpressure
>>
Maybe when we develop exoskeletons that can help take the load this will be a reality.

>So /k/ what's your verdict or thoughts on soldiers or a type of combat unit that's heavily armored and armed with "heavy" weaponry like LMGs?

It's a recent vidya meme and it's a completely absurd concept in real life.
EVERY fucking AAA FPS has a juggernaut type of enemy with heavy armor and heavy weaponry. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
>>
>>31956662
This. Even if you're wearing a armored helmet and get shot in the head with a 50 cal you're dead. Sorry Call of Duty, it's never going to be a real thing.

Seriously.

Now, the argument could be made that PRACTICAL full body armor might be useful for building clearance, either on the point man or the whole team. But during MOUT work when you're clearing a whole lot of buildings one by one, or when you're in the middle of fuckbutt Afghanistan? Yeah, it must've been your dream as a child to become a heat casualty.

I know right? The M240 is a LIGHT machinegun, but its not exactly the best type of weapon to be used when being very mobile or moving around especially when you're sprinting like the Call of Duty juggernaut or any Call of Duty character for that matter.

If you're gonna be like a Call of Duty-style Juggernaut, atleast use an MK46/48, they're lighter in weight.

You know how archaeologists uncover some totally impractical, unwieldy looking son-of-a-bitch when they excavate historical battlefields? You know how they call those bizarro weapons "ceremonial" weapons? I can imagine juggernaut loadouts being that exact same thing 600 years in the future.

>"Yo, why the heck is this guy in 100 pound armor? And why is his gun 30 pounds?"
>"I don't know, man. It was probably ceremonial."
>"Cool."
>"Okay,"

In all seriousness, if you really want to make it work, you're going to have to seriously overhaul that modern tech. You need carbon fiber reinforced ballistic plates with super-plastic kinetic shields. You're going to need super-plastic LMGs with telescoping ammunition and reliably backpack-fed. You're going to need rovers and recon vehicles for them to carry their fat asses around in. You're going to need shoulder mounted cameras with integrated HUD interface to account for zero neck mobility. You're going to need cooling fans and cooling pads located around the neck, thighs, lower back, and wrists. You're going to need to give this fat son-of-a-gun his own recon drones, because if you're going to invest so much money into this guy, then why the hell not? And you're going to have to buy this guy an extra large casket, because nobody wants to take all the armor off him when he dies, so they're just going to bury him like that for raisins.

It has to be scalable and quick to remove .For example you want to cover large amounts of urban ground quickly and comfortably. You would not want to wear more then 20 lbs of equipment, excluding primary weapon. Keep your equipment modular. It's why pals webbing exists today.

They make cooling suits that have liquid cooling for the body. Two main problems with the system is that it has limited cooling capacity 45 minutes - 3 hrs pending climate. Next is power you need a 4-5 lb lithium polymer battery to keep a GOOD cooling system running for a couple hrs. EOD suits are just precursors to EXO suits we just need LiFePO4 stability with double the capacity with a 60% weight reduction of a typical Lithium Polymer Battery .

The idea that "heavy" infantry is useful in modern warfare is predicated on the false idea that combat is where wars are won and lost.

A soldier who puts all the weight they can carry into weapons and armor starts to get hungry very quickly, slow quicker still (if they want enough weapons and armor to get the job done), and fatigued quicker even still.

If all fighting took place in a single room with no cover, a guy in super heavy armor with super heavy weapons might be the best bet.

In reality, people generally have to move to where the fight is and do a lot of moving while in the fight to stay alive, the extra value added by larger individual weapon systems and heavier individual armor quickly disappears when the cost in combat effectiveness brought on by fatigue is factored in.

In a world of fully mechanized infantry or where the MULE (or similar) becomes widespread, troops will likely carry heavier weapons, armor, and more ammo but units like the juggernaut from MW2 won't be advantageous until armor technology makes a large technological leap such that it advances beyond weapons technology by a significant margin. This has not happened since the middle ages, and even then weapons tech rapidly caught up with armor because they exist as adversarial technologies and if nobody can kill eachother then nobody can win any battles and the profitability of war is lost.

TL;DR, super heavy infantry will likely never exist again because weapons technology has so far outpaced armor technology and it's a lot more weight effective now to pack a few armor piercing bullets than to fully cover onesself in armor that can resist regular bullets, let alone AP or API. Super heavy mechanized infantry might exist in the future as shock troops but would not be used in the way OP anticipates.

The problem of man is not that he cannot carry enough armor, its that he cannot carry enough gun.

Even if the exoskeleton was strong enough to lift a 20-30mm autocannon, he would tip over from the bulk and the recoil. A mech becomes necessary when you need a walker with enough mass of its own to manhandle larger weapons.

Yeah it's pretty impractical for military usages, and although room clearing and SWAT usage might be slightly less useless you all cannot lie how fugging cool it would be if it WAS somehow practical.

Closeup of the Juggernaut's face. Curious /k, what type of ballistic mask and protective headwear the Call of Duty juggernaut wears?

Kinda looks like skull shape mask imo, then again /K/'s gonna go full detail on how that and why the rest of the Juggernaut's gear and equipment is not realistically good.

Ok srsly, whats so heatstroke inducing about the juggernaut's armor? Doesn't look like it would.

Do you know what you're talking about? the weight of the m240 has been drastically reduced in newer models such as the m240l
>>
>>31976148
Not that guy but
>EOD suit: ~40 kgs (according to the hurt locker book)
>M240: 12-13 kgs
>Bulletproof helmet: probably 3+ kgs
>What appears to be an interceptor or something over top: 15 kgs with plates
>All the ammo, pouches and shit: at least 10 kgs
>Taking place in Kandahar in the middle of august: A dry heat averaging at around 35c with highs of 40c
think about it.

Arm pic related with a LMG and you'd probably get better results without shards of armor flying everywhere.
