Don't do this if you don't know anything about the rifle you're buying.

Even if they do match, I'd call that a rip-off unless there's something special about it.

More pics, please, OP. We need to give it a proper assessment. If that stock is sporterized though, then I don't think there's any way to say you didn't get fucked in the ass.

Well at least it looks like you still have the upper handguard so I assume it's not bubbafucked. Those almost look like flaming bombs though, which is a symbol for like the US Army or something. At the same time however...

>>31952268
It faintly looks like there's a Tula star there on the receiver.

There must be someone available who knows a lot of shit about Mausers. Still, so far, I'm still thinking you were likely ripped off in paying twice as much as you should have, if not more.
>>
>>31952212

not OP but find me a cheapo 98k
>>
>>31952259
I wouldn't say don't ever do that, but it's good to have some restraint.
>>31952334
>It faintly looks like there's a Tula star there on the receiver.
It's an Israeli Star of David. OP's rifle was made immediately post war and it got sold a little bit latter to Israel.
>>
>>31952325
Easy way to fix that is by editing them in Paint, doing fuck all, and just saving them. For some reason the process of going to MS Paint and being saved lowers how much memory they take up.

I'm a fucking wizard when it comes to computers, as you can obviously tell.

Well that looks like a late-war bit near the bayonet lug, so I definitely think it's 1945 like it said on the receiver. The stock likely matches, so it's a good start. Should have come with a cleaning rod at least for $700... I mean fuck. The front sight hood is still there though so it's not a Russian Capture. RC Kar98ks are COMPLETELY non-matching, pretty much.

Thanks for the info Anon. I was told it was made in a German factory by the old guy I bought it from.
>>
>>31952366
>I was told it was made in a German factory by the old guy I bought it from.
Nope. It was made in Brünn Czechoslovakia. They made guns for Nazi Germany, and your receiver was made during the very end of the war, but it wasn't assembled until post-war.
>>
>>31952363
I never tried that, I am posting from my phone at the moment. However your saying it was German made after the war?
>>
>>31952355
I wouldn't jump up and say it's post-war. Might be just from the last few months of WWII. Are there any waffenamps, OP? Eagle with a circle? If it was taken into Israeli Military Service though, then it would obviously at least have the swastika peened out of it.
>>
>>31952385
I'm saying it might not have been made post-war (not sure), and didn't specify German. I have a Kar98k and the info on it turned out to have it made in Austria. What were the letters... BYF or something like that. I was a little disappointed, but meh, what can you do? Still a good rifle, though I prefer my beloved No.4 Lee Enfield.
>>
>>31952350
K98k prices are pretty up there, but the ones that demand the most value are muh nazi shit. This one really isn't, but I could see $700 being the upper price range of the gun.

>I really need to buy a k98k. I should try to find a French one. I think the prices of them are still low.

>>31952386
There isn't any Waffenamps from the pics posted above. I don't think the Israelis peened off the eagles anyhow.
>>
>>31952386
I don't see any, though I am not sure where to look for those.

Looks like you got ripped off, OP. Still, stick around, and post more pics. Cover the serial number if you want but try to show as much as possible; maybe someone will come forth with some information that will increase the value of your firearm, but I'm afraid to say that it REALLY seems you got ripped the fuck off. Sorry OP.

>>31952414
This. As you can see, Kar98ks are more like $250-350 rifles. Not $700. I think I got mine for about $350 but it was a Russian Capture made in Austria, so yeah, I pretty much got ripped off too, but not THAT ripped off. Whoever sold you that seems to have made a fucking killing. Sorry again, OP. But hey, at least you got an awesome rifle, enjoy it as soon as possible! Once you start putting rounds downrange, the sting of it should hopefully lessen. Who knows, maybe if you keep it for like 30-40 years, you can sell it one day to get your $700 back... though of course with inflation, it won't be worth the same amount as $700 today.
>>
>>31952515
Russian captures have been hovering around $500 or more for the past 3 or 4 years.

OP, this is what a waffenamp looks like, but on a Kar98k it's bigger I think. My RC Kar98k I had still had the waffenamps, but with the swastika peened out of the circle, so unlike pic related (probably too blurry to see the teeny tiny swastika), the eagle on my Kar98k was only standing on a circle, but it would have originally had a swastika on it. If yours doesn't even have the eagle with the circle, then it was likely made post-war I guess.

>>31952284
Those three look like they MIGHT have been waffenamps? Did different factories use different waffenamp stamps? Looks like the swastika was peened, if those are indeed eagles, but it's hard to tell. If those were waffenamps, then I'd say your rifle was made in late WWII since I don't see why they would include waffenamps post-war.
>>
>>31952406

lol no

>>
>>31952548
Fucking seriously? Shouldn't they be worth LESS than a non-Russian-captured one? I got mine in Canada around 2009-10.

OP's still has the front sight hood, so it is probably not RC. Does it have capture screws? OP, check around the magazine. In front of it, and I think the other is behind the trigger. Is there a total of two screws, or four screws?

Post-WW2-made CZ-Brno Vz.98N (Czechoslovak Kar.98k copy) sold to Israel. Worth $350-500 if serial numbers are matching.
>>
>>31952208
>>31952268
>>31952284
Your serial number doesn't match the list of WWII serial numbers from swp that I found on mauser98k, but those do look like variations of waffenampts, so it may be a late war Nazi rifle, but it's probably a rifle assembled just after the war.

Those aren't Waffenamts. Waffenamts will have an eagle over WaAnumber. Or sometimes just an eagle over a number.
>>31952575
>>31952634
No, it's an Israeli one like I've seen 5 times in this thread.
>>
>>31952587
It seems like different manufacturers used different proof marks I think. Don't hold me to that, but it seems to be the case. If I were you, I'd try to find some information on waffenamts. If you can find a book on 'German Waffenamts' or 'Nazi Waffenamts' then buy it. It'd probably be relatively small, like my book about the Lee Enfield by Ian Skennerton or whatever his name is. A small book that only cost me like $4.00 or something. "Lee Enfield Buyer's Guide" or something. You can probably find a similarly small/cheap book, but about Waffenamts. That, or try to find some websites that specialise in them.

>>31952641
Uh oh, missing capture screws (or at least one anyways). That's a sign of a Russian Capture, but other signs of Russian Captures are missing cleaning rod and missing front sight hood. So you've got two of the three signs. Quite strange. Check for serial numbers on whatever parts you can find. If your main worry is about it being a "Nazi Mauser" though, then research the Waffenampts. See if yours is correct.

http://candrsenal.com/terminology-german-rifle-manufacturing-codes/

It does seem that yours was made in Czechslovakia as >>31952383 said. So yeah, a priority right now is to find out what waffenamt they used. As for mine, it was 1942 BNZ as I recall, so yeah, as I mentioned, it was made in Austria.

>>31952650
Glad to be of help, good luck researching the waffenampt. If you wanted a German-made Mauser, then it would seem you're out of luck, but it still might be a 'Nazi Mauser'. Not very nice history, but it's history none the less, and fascinating history at that. Take good care of it, and you'll be able to pass it on to your kids or grandkids someday. You'll get your money's worth one way or another. Go do a lot of hunting or something, or a fuckload of target practice. "This rifle got me to 400yd", that might ease the sting.
>>
>>31952774
Thanks Anon. I will look into it more. I appreciate the help the /k/ community gave me. Hopefully it'll make me a better gun buyer.
>>
>>31952805
No worries; always fun to discuss firearms, even if the outcome can be unfortunate at times.

>>31952259
Heed this advice. It can (and would have) saved you quite a bit of money. When you want to get a surplus firearm, do your research first, not after you've already bought it. Merely knowing what letters to look for in terms of German Mausers, you could have told the guy "Hey, that's not German. I'm not going over $400" and at least then start haggling. Might have gotten it for $500 instead, but in my opinion I think that still might have been rather pricey. Then again, the prices I'm familiar with are 5+ years old so many the anons saying that $500 is common now are being honest.
>>
>>31952884
It was $800 at first I figured that $700 was good since the only other price I had seen was for one was $900
>>
>>31952884
Then again I have my whole life to collect still. I'm only 18
>>
>>31952574
Did it have to be German? Don't think that was specified stupid fuck. Not to mention the third one down is a German 98.
>>
>>31953969

Germans built K98s you stupid fuck. The rest of the world built rifles based of the Model 98 action.

>Third one down is a K98
That's just the rifle stock, German k98's have shot up in price, just the reality. Are they worth it? For shooting, your better off getting the more common cheaper options. When you think about the price hike from a collector's perspective instead of a shooters it makes more sense.
>>
>>31952363

The reason for that is likely that a picture taken by a camera is basically a grid of pixels, with each pixel having one single value. Adding those up is huge in filesize, plus the metadata. Now if this works any similar to .rar and .zip, simply saving the picture could clear some metadata, as well as save the pixel values differently, so that colours that exist more than once share an entry, if you know what I mean and by that saving a lot of space.
>>
>>31952557

Do you mean Waffenamt? Department for weapons? The plural of that is Waffenämter. If you are referring to stamps, it would be Waffenamtstempel (sg. and pl. are the same). Stamp(s) of the department of weapons.
>>
>>31956833
I think I get the gist of it, but I'm not good with computer lingo.

>>31956852
I've always just heard them called Waffenampts. Or I guess Waffenamt, rather. Sometimes I fuck about with a 'p' for some reason, but I don't come from a German nation, so I guess we don't name everything by their proper titles. I think the Kar98k would properly be called Karabiner 98 Kurz, and I have NO idea how to say 98 in German, but nobody really calls it that. They just say "Car ninety-eight kay", basically. Still, cool that you know such German lingo, but I think I'll just stick to 'Waffenamt' rather than 'Waffenamtstempel'. Better than simply saying 'Nazi Stamp' or something like that.
>>
>>31957016

If you mean department for weapons it's Waffenamt. 98 ist Achtundneunzig (8 and 90). Acht oond noinzeech, lel. Yeah I'm German, so it's nothing special. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
>>
>>31957107
Thanks for the offer. I can manage 1, 2, and 3 in German. That's good enough for now. If I ever plan to visit Germany, I'll try to brush up and learn some of the basics. Cheers from Canada!
>>
>>31957311

There's a lot of stuff you can use it for besides talking with people when on vacation. Some examples from the top of my mind:

- reading NS gun laws, the original paper is like two pages long only
- reading NS literature in general, like "Wofür kämpfen wir?", a manual for officers to indoctrinate their soldiers with, contains clear cut NS ideology without any interpretation necessary
- reading up on guns and other weapons, their designations, origin etc.
- reading German literature such as Nietzsche in the original, though I found the English translations to be quite good at Nietzschesource desu. Great exercise though and one of the most eloquent authors to ever have written (fuck Kant).
- reading small tidbits on packaging, such as Scho-Ka-Kola and what not, doesn't have to be historic.

I see a lot of people have interest in historic German military and such, a little knowledge of the language doesn't hurt there. And it's seriously not that hard, it's very alike to English but is always hyped up to be angry and complicated.
