there is really nothing to too an old double barrelled shotgun. as long as it's bore is clean and it actually locks there shouldn't be a problem.

Do you know what year it was made? A lot of very old shotguns are only safe with black powder. Biggest risk with an old shotgun is Damascus barrels. If it has Damascus barrels DO NOT SHOOT SMOKELESS LOADS THROUGH IT.

Also what's the model number? Western Fields was just a trade name used by a retailer to market cheap guns. Trigger guard may have been left off from the factory to cut costs. Looks like it's a Stevens 311. Some of those were Damascus barreled. Can't tell from the picture if yours is or not.

Also, if anyone is looking in here, I was planning to clean the gun up. The way I know how to clean rust is steel wool and gun oil. Is there a better way to clean it up nice?

Find out when it was made. Find out if it was build to withstand the high pressure loads of today. See if you can get the history on it.

Check chamber length. An old standard shell length was 2-1/2 inches. Not as common with American shotguns but common enough that with an old shotgun you should check.

I can't find my specific model, but I looked it up by year, apparently there is supposed to be a letter under the barrel.

I have 4 letters...

All the parts have the same letters stamped on them.

That's good. If you are worried about chamber pressure, you may want to look into RST shells. They make a low pressure shell.
