It's not a california thing, I've got a couple bros across the US that ran into that in their colleges.

It's not a 1st amendment thing though, it's the same deal they do with block porn on school computers, but expanded to dorm wifi.
Particularly common at religious schools.

Not /k/, but these are excellent for airsoft, and probably only good for airsoft. If you want a decent gasmask to actually use, you might be better off looking at police surplus.

Put silent/decent micro-fans (eg computer fans) where the filters were. It will blow fresh air up from the bottom of the lenses so they don't fog, and there's room to install a radio in the mouthpiece if you're willing to hack up a walkie talkie.

you'd need to replace the lenses with Lexan, otherwise they'd shatter pretty badly if a BB hit them. It's quite possible to do though, I made a few GP-5s airshit-safe

Mask #1: I replaced the lenses with mesh. Good visibility despite what you'd think, worked well.
Mask #2: I wore low profile safety glasses underneath. Yes, the mask lens cracked not even by getting shot, but it was fun and harmless.

Lexan is a BITCH to work with, replacement lenses need to be curved. First it needs to be baked at a low temperature until there's no moisture, then you can bring up the temp to be manipulated, and even then you'll ruin the surface finish which fucks with the visibility through the lens.

Visibility is excellent if you grew up wearing glasses. The peripheral vision you lose only people without glasses would miss.

Shouldering with the mask is reasonably easy, especially since the mask is mostly rubber, even with some electronics stuffed inside.

Hacked up a 20$ walkie talkie set between the two masks, used an old earbud with an over-the-ear-mount to make an attached earpiece and put the talk-button sticking out the metal mask front. Couldn't change the channel without dismantling it, but it worked like a charm, especially since it was basically silent.

I used an M10 for maintenance working in high-dust and fiberglass environments and I'm (mostly) fine

no idea how it fares against actual gas or fallout but I don't think just wearing it is dangerous.
