I am building an AR10 with a 20" upper, should i go with a carbine length buffer or a rifle length buffer. Recommendations on each setup, I kind of want to toss a PRS stock on it because aesthetics but it the functionality is going to be effected by the longer buffer system it wont be worth it.

Shotgun shells use very fast powders. You will see extremely negligible velocity differences between barrel lengths. We're talking less than 50fps difference between an 18" barrel and a 30" barrel.

Like, somewhere before 1979 because my 1979 Remington 1100 has a dimpled mag tube.

The further the mouth of the shell is from the forcing cone the better it will pattern. If you're observing *any* damage to your forcing cone something is wrong, regardless of load used.

Skeet is fun AF. I also shoot trap and sporting clays but most of my shooting time is spent on the skeet field. Ducks, geese, rabbits, turkeys, and basically every other game animal you're allowed to shoot with a shotgun are tasty as fuck. Yes, you should get back into it.

If by "eventually" you mean half a million rounds or more before you see any wear at all, still no. The forcing cone sits well in front of the mouth of the shell even with the longest shell the gun will chamber. Couple this with the only thing it (should) come in contact with is the plastic wad and the fact that shotguns operate at extremely low pressures by firearm standards (12,000PSI is SAAMI max for all gauges, most factory loads are in the 9000-10,000PSI range) and odds are you will wear out the breech long before there's any measurable erosion of the forcing cone.

And even then the forcing cone can be re-reamed (which is a common competiton-gun modification) as the longer the cone is and the further from the chamber it is, the better the gun patterns. You literally have about 3/4 of the barrel to move the forcing cone through, and it's theoretically possible that on a fixed-breech gun (something like a bolt-action shotgun) the barrel could hit 100 million shells before it's "shot out".

The gun in the pic with the doves is a late-60's SKB. Now granted it's got chromed bores but it was my dad's skeet gun from the day it was new until he gave it to me. I have personally put over 350,000 rounds through the 28ga barrel (the one pictured, it's a 3-barrel set) and I've only had it 7 years. Barrels are fine, forcing cones are fine.

The dimple generally doesn't prohibit a mag extension, and if yours is deep enough (which is rare) to do so, they can be peened out easily enough.
