IIRC Russian crew losses went down to ~1 per penetration in Chechnya after they reduced the ammunition load to just the 22 rounds stored in the autoloader. Due to the ammunition carousel being low in the hull it is unlikely that a hit to the turret side would result in the ammo going up, so crew causalities would be limited if they only had the autoloader.
