If you were making a Battlefield-esque video game set in a Cold War gone hot, what year would you set it in?
>>
9th November 2016.
>>
>>
>>
'53-'62

That's when things got the most "hot" during the Cold War
>>
>>
>>

Likely 1984.

The planets align and the Soviets go mad and start attacking everybody, launch all nukes.

The first half of the campaign would be a fairly simple calladooty type shooter, until the nukes fall.

>fiftythousandpeopleusedtolivehere.wav

The second half would be a STALKER/Fallout scenario based on gathering remnants of the past and finding something, possibly based on why the Soviets got so angry during the planetary alignment.

Give me some time and I could probably come up with a decent script.

Early 1970's to mid 1970's.

Just before the USAF gets the F-15 and the F-16 but after the VVS/PVO receives the MiG-23 and MiG-25.

US and Soviet forces are left w/ two options- either fucking join the war or fuck off.

'83.

You have Able Archer, Grenada, and Lebanon all in one sweet package scenario wise, along with that big green machine aesthetic.

Not to mention one of the best years for 80s music.

An example:

B/c back then the Russians were ten foot tall motherfuckers that everybody and their fucking mom had to deal with. There was never any guarantee that a war between the Red Army's godless Slavic hordes would have been conventional only and any exchange of tact or theater nukes might have seriously escalated into full blown nuclear amrageddon.

That and there's something soul satisfying about hating Commies. Sorta like how cops tasing hippies seem right and proper.

speaking of cold war gone hot games that early 70s campaign for CMANO was cool with slow escalation until the climax:

>british phantoms and lightnings valiantly defending against backfires and Bear H launching nuclear cruise missiles
>british northern radar sites and RAF lossiemouth get glassed
>RN sacrifices one of their carriers in a suicide mission so its Buccaneers can turrn Murmansk into a nuclear slag pile

Pretty sweat idea.

You could be part of the Royal Navy Task Force head/reclaiming the Falklands for the beginning when the Soviets decide to turn hot when the Royal Navy leaves a serious gap in the GIUK line thus allowing the Soviet SSBNs out and go mad.

>RN sacrifices one of their carriers in a suicide mission

I should also clarify that the CMANO mission isn't a 100% suicide mission but you don't have to be a top naval analyst to tell that a small NATO carrier just off the northern norway coast that has just shit nuclear hellfire onto the headquarters of the Red Banner Northern Fleet and taken out Backfire staging airfields in the Kola Peninsula probably isn't going to make it back to Portsmouth in one piece(if I remember correctly it gets nuclearly tagged by a SSGN or attacked by Backfires if you survive the SSGN)

early 70s or late 80s(like Red Storm Rising) are the best time for NATO vs Soviet naval war scenarios

This. And back then the sides ware still somewhat equall technically.
I was thinking about it several times - it could be really cool - a lot of weapons that ware in use back then, and now are forgotten, early nv equipment...
As for location - no matter. Everything would be a nuclear wasteland anyway.

What we need are more historic games... but made by Tripwire. I.E. Red Orchestra II (WWII Eastern Front), Rising Storm (WWII Pacific Campaign), Rising Storm II (Vietnam), The Parallel Divide? (Korea?), All Loud on the Western Front? (WWI Western Front?), Overlord? (WWII Western Front?), Iberian Struggle? (Napoleonic Wars Peninsular Wars?), Nation Divided? (Civil War?), Zulu Conquest? (Zulu War?), etc.

What's needed more than any of that, however... is a new STALKER game. Even if it's just Call of Pripyat but released on a new engine or at least improved to modern standards like what Capcom has been doing with their Resident Evil series over and over.

>Cold War goes hot
>Play as German soldier at Fulda, cuts right into you mowing down Soviets on your MG3, continuously retreating
>Few skirmish missions, a tank mission, eventually ends German campaign when a tactical nuke goes off killing your unit
>Cinematic of Soviets rolling across Europe
>Play as US, first off a Dday style amphibious assault on France
>Eventually make your way to Germany and right before you claim victory nukes go off and the game ends with the quote " I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."

Mid 70's to early 80's for maximum aesthetics.

Make weapons faction specific but make a fuckton of different factions so you get to play around with different weapons (Basically a wide variety of NATO countries like USA, West Germany Britian, hell even sprinkle Rhodesia into there vs. Warshaw Pact Countries like Russia, Czech, East Germany, etc.)

Include maps that are pre-nuke/un-nuked which are your bog standard shooter maps, and then include a few "nuclear winter" maps where both factions wear experimental environmental suits and play in an area that is almost pitch black and even in illuminated area's the falling dust is so thick you can barely see, each faction gets one of those old fashion NVA-scopes/spotlight combo's to help them navigate. Getting shot in one of these maps is death no matter where you're shot and with what, if you survive than a radiation meter pops up and slowly fills up, once full you die.

Mid-1950s
>Russia is standardizing AK-47 assault rifles and SKS-45 semi-auto rifles

>America still has M1 Rifle
>Commonwealth only just starting to adopt L1A1/C1
>France have MAS-49
>Don't even know what West Germany is using
>India still using Lee Enfield

I think in the mid-50s, the Commies had superior firearms on the go. They were moving on from SMGs and standard-issue rifles with full-power rifle rounds. Sure they'd get pretty boned beyond 500m (VERY unlikely engagement distance), but could carry more ammo, and would be superior in close quarters against riflemen. As for 1946, the SKS and AK haven't been put into mass production yet, standard issue rifle was still the Mosin, but had a fuckload of SMGs to go with it as well as probably quite a few SVTs kicking around.

Hopefully the campaign features a red dawn group of missions.

From Fallout creator Scott Campbell:
>The nuclear Armageddon in the back-story was between the US and China. After shipping several people asked me why China and not the old standby, the Soviet Union. I made the choice when I remembered experiences with Oleg, a Moscow developer I worked with months before when I was assistant-producing a typing game. Once, in the middle of a phone conversation, I heard some muffled bangs, and the phone went quiet. When I asked him what the noise was, he replied, “Oh, it was just the Russian mob firing their guns in the street.” I thought he was joking – he wasn’t. After that, I had a really hard time believing that the once mighty USSR would be in a position to threaten the world any time soon. So I turned to the next major communist country that typifies “the East”: China.
Bear in mind that Fallout 1 released in 1997

Also one of the prebuilt Fallout 1 player characters is the grand-daughter of a Russian Diplomat from the Soviet Consulate in LA.

Well that's a pretty fucking cool idea, but sadly reminded me that it's going to be 2017 in less than 2 months. That story is nearly 20 years old. I'd ask what I've been doing with my life all these years, but I published a novel that I've wanted to write/publish for probably around a decade or so. I'm actually feeling 'relatively' content with life at the moment, and wrote over 10,000 words for a new book today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get over 10,000 more words. The story is coming along great, I think.

I wish Eugen actually spent more time on the cash cow that is Wargame - they should extend the equipment back to 1946 for every nation - CAT E and D and add fixed emplacements (from trucks) like AA guns and SAM's and light arty.

What I would really like to see is them remove the 3 weapon limit from units and revamp naval - make huge as shit naval maps, implement paradrops in some fashion to even it out.
The 3 weapon limit being removed will allow for say quad stacked infantry squads to become a platoon with ATGM or heavy RR, a Mortar, and a GPMG, as well as giving squads access to their actual TOE - Squads getting grenade launchers/rifle grenades or the ability for a squad to have SMG's and rifles alongside LMG's and AT.

We probably won't see this until the next Wargame though, if there ever is one

1954. The year of of the Hungarian revolution.
Basically, a country-wide revolt against the Soviet occupation.
That event deserves a game in it's own right, but there was real pressure for Britain and America to assist Hungary. Britain was busy in other conflicts, and America let it get crushed like a pawn rather than enter the war.
If the west had intervened, it would be the perfect opportunity for all of Europe to revolt.

MAS-49 is a fine battle rifle but I still don't understand why France never issued a 20 round magazine - that said it's potential lack in capacity was made up for by designated marksman rifles like the MAS-49 and MAS-36 scoped variants, the AA-52 machine gun, a heavy reliance and use of rifle grenades, and the absolutely excellent MAT-49 SMG

West German borderguard is using FAL's and WW2 US small arms, Bundeswehr has a small amount of FALS, the early Rheinmetall G3 with leaf rear sight mounted like a mauser/AK and CETME marked G3's with CETME flip sights are entering service and has Garands and other US small arms for rear line troops

Half the Vietnam DLC campaign would be the French, ie have fun in Dien Bien Phu, the rest would be a mix of ARVN, SK, US and ANZAC.
Missions in the Falklands and Cyprus would be balls to the wall like Goose Green and Pentemili.

I feel like this is the direction ARMA 4 needs to go - they could always DLC in modern shit or even include it (from previous titles) so it's 46'-2017'

The first country to adopt the FAL in respectable numbers was Canada, and that was 1954 as I recal, so in the 'mid-50s', nobody really had any FAL variants in decent numbers. At best, they'd be JUST in the process of replacing whatever firearm was in use before it.

I've got several idea.

First one revolves around decolonisation wars. Begin with the French Army in Indochina, get deployed later to Suez and Algeria, then afterwards become a merc and fight everywhere in Africa.

You were 18 when drafted in 1949 for Indochina, now you're a 48 year old grizzled veteran, doing a last stand as a volunteer in Rhodesia , and the game (or campaign at least) ends when your position get overrun and you silently wait for the floppies to get into your pillbox, holding right a grenade in your back...

Then, this time you're an East Bloc operative, Soviet or at least Cuban. You make your first step as a young conscript suppressing the Hungarian uprising or an enthusiastic revolutionary pushing back the imperialists at the Bay or Pigs, then you lead GRU operations in South Vietnamese territory, are later sent to help Ethiopia against Eritrea in an airborne attack with BMD IFVs and ASU-57 assault guns, and finally meet your fate at the end of the South Africans after years of fighting in Angola alongside with the locals, the Cubans, and East German expeditionary forces.

Third one would be about a British soldier, this time. It all begins in Suez, taking part in a vintage heliborne operation, meeting our French protagonist. Later on, after some years of calm, you get deployed, as an experienced sergeant, to quell the Troubles in Northern Ireland, fighting a fierce guerrilla war against the IRA, all of that in the middle of the civilian population... and add a gameplay feature that makes that the more civilians die, houses get shot etc during your campaign, the more enemies you face.

By this time, even with your age, you're considered as an extremely experience asset by the British army, which sends you to the Falklands. [cont]

These two are actually fully historic, although it's a little bit of a stretch for the French guy.

No American character here, but come on, every fucking game is about Americans. Having some flavour is good.
>>
>>31938250
Fuck, I messed the order of the post, I wrote only two stories at first.

So, you get sent to the Falklands, however some upstairs cunt officers blames you for some shit that didn't happen, a faggot burned down a house full of Argie prisoners but happened to be "someone""s son, and hence didn't get the blame.

You flee to South Africa, Rhodesia being already out of the picture. After learning what happened to your old French friend, you decide to join the SADF, and make your way to a combat unit. You wear these great nutria brown uniforms, fighting with FALs and Galils and Uzis on Ratel IFVs, and at some point your unit hears about a GRU unit operating in Angola and fucking up regularily your supply lines. So, your company gets tasked with the hunt for these guys, and you spend your time speeding on dirt roads in the Ratels, running after these sly commies. You finally catch them and defeat them - along with a column of Angolan T-55s in a large battle, where you lose an arm and get finally discharged. You live then peaceful days in South Africa, as a retired hero... until the regime falls, and you get lynched by a black mob for being a SADF veteran.

Last scenario would be about a Soviet dude again (so let's make the first one Cuban?) who is part of the KGB Border Guards in Asia and gets engaged in 1969 by the Chinese troops, being steps away of starting a nuclear war. Later on, you are sent to Afghanistan, as a part of the KGB Spetsnaz, storming the presidential palace, and then hunting mujahideen caravans in the night, with a NSPU night scope on your suppressed AKMN, and capturing Stinger and RPG caches from the Taliban.
Then you learn that you're sent back home and quickly are sent to suppress the insurgency in the Baltic states. Unfortunately for you, your unit gets squashed and you have to flee the country or get lynched ; by the time it falls apart, you find yourself defending Transnistria from the Moldavian forces, and .. cont.

and after making sure that the Russian population here is safe, you go to an other battlefield, to protect the Serbs from the Croats and Bosniaks in the Balkans, where you find a new home. However, in the end, no matter how bravely you fight, your newfound family is bombed by a NATO strike, and the state that hosted you gets defeated. You go back ot Russia, finally, and serve in the offensive of the Second Chechen War... where your BTR gets smashed by a missile before you reach the zone of operations.

Once again, these are historic, they're a stretch when it comes to the age of the characters, but well.

The cold war was cold because if it got hot nukes would be dropped.

Quit being retarded.
>>
>>31938680
To my knoweldge, the Cold War was cold because the main superpowers were USA (or Nato in general) and Russia (or Combloc in general), but they never actually went head-to-head. USA and Russia never went in all-out war with one another, and the entire of Nato never went to war against the entirety of the Combloc which would likely have been considered WWIII. Sure there were some little spats; US vs Vietnam, US/Britain/Canada/Australia/South Korea vs North Korea and China, stuff like that, but I think what would have made the Cold War hot would have been an invasion. US in USSR or USSR in US. Two superpowers DIRECTLY going head-to-head instead of this...

>Be USSR
>Meet someone against US
>Give Soviet firearms and support

>Be US
>Meet someone against USSR
>Give Nato firearms and support

It seemed like the US did more actual fighting than Russia, but when Russia fought somewhere (Russo-Afghan War 1979-1989), the Americans were sure to provide what help they could without actually getting their hands dirty so as to not spark an all-out hot war against the powerful USSR.

I dunno, maybe some alternate history where Chernobyl never happens, so Russia doesn't lose its credibility then, and Gorbachev holds on to power until 1998 and a war breaks out in 1993? And by the end of the game the US manages to BTFO Gorbachev? I guess then Bush is elected for a second term due to the American public being swooned by the fact that he's going on about "finishing what Gorbachev started." So the whole time you get to drive M1s and fly A-10As, F-15s, and Apaches, fight soviet soldiers, while fighting against Russian forces in the middle east at first, and throughout the campaign you slowly watch as the climate and seasons change with each mission as you work your way north. And I guess you do shit like fight Erkanoplans in the Caspian sea as they circle around ships and shit. I guess there's also shit like A-10As being modified for naval operations, so during the naval missions you have to fly an A-10... N(?) and do some Ace Combat shit, looping around the Erkanoplans, avoiding cannon fire, popping flares, chasing the things down, etc. But with the realism of DCS. And with the tanks you have realistic damage models and shit, like War Thunder. And all those crazy Russian experiments that never came to fruition like the Erkanoplans show up in the game.

So I guess it's a combination of Modern Warfare's factions, DCS's air combat, War Thunder's damage simulation, Escape From Tarkov's weapon customization system (except it's the entirety of your character, so you can change armor, equipment, decals, weapon parts, etc), Toy Soldiers' boss battles, BF1's graphics, and it's all in the Gulf War era. And as an added bonus, Clinton is never elected, so no AWB, Columbine is averted, Shillary never comes to power and she never does anything. I guess the name for the game would be something like Red Nova, since it's the death of the Red Star.

Cont

I guess afterwards I would make a sequel called Nova 2, where in the beginning, there's a timeline where they show the events of Nova 1 and then the events that were averted, and the events that happened in the alternate timeline, like how Benghazi is stopped with no casualties, emails are never leaked, Trump runs in 2008 and wins against Sanders, runs and wins again in 2012, Bin Laden was killed in 1994 after trying to fuck with American troops in Saudi Arabia, so no 9/11, Sandy Hook is averted after Lanza is arrested 3 days before the shooting, the US helps rebuild Russia, Putin comes to power, and North Korea starts bitching again in 2013, so the sons of the characters you made in the first game end up in a war with North Korea, where now you get to fly A-10SDs (A-10Ns, but with quieter, more powerful engines, as well as lighter materials and more up to date avionics), F-22s with wings that fold for storage and with naval capabilities, B-1s, F-16s, and Commanches, drive a fictional variant of the M1 Abrams called the M1A6, etc, but North Korea in this timeline has intel that was gathered by the Soviets and China in the war in 1993, and were also given Flankers, Blackjacks, new ships, new guns, etc, so you're fighting a more fanatical version of the troops in the first game with equipment on a similar level to yours, but they don't surrender as easily, and you also face more fire coming in your direction, since they aren't as disciplined. So in this game you face updated versions of some of the bosses in the last game, and they have a completely different AI, so you need new tactics for these bosses. Eventually you end up re-uniting Korea in 2015, and, I dunno, find all the Nazi gold and the Amber Room hidden in Kim's house?

I guess I'm having too much fun coming up with this shit, so I really wanna continue talking about this stupid shit. So the third game would probably be called NovaE, as in the plural for nova, where the E is just a backwards 3, and in this game, the year at the beginning of the game is 2019, where Condoleezza Rice was elected in 2016, so now China starts a space race, and Mosins on Mars happens. This time, F-22s, A-10SDs, and everything else is modified so they can operate in low oxygen environments. This time you still play as the soldiers from Nova 2. Also, space fighters and Shattered Horizons.

It's about zombies as well as survivalism, and /lit/ has already decided it's shit. I will make a new edition when I get the time so as to fix many of the more blatant of mistakes, so for now, you can revel in its shittiness as well.

Living amongst the Dead by J N Morgan.

You can find it on Amazin quite easily, which will provide you the first few pages.

Germany was still pumping out equipment well into March, until the Americans started bombing the Romanian synthetic oil plants and fields. Then it all grinded to a halt.

Germans get raw resources and assurances of leniency, and you can bet your ass they'd have been back in the fight.

the Soviets manage to spook the Romanian leadership into granting military access and aid for the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
Part of the Romanian military leadership goes rogue and orders forces under their control to cross into Yugoslavia and defend on the Danube line, as per the secret mutual defense pact between the two countries.
Yugoslavia, spooked by the habbenings and thinking it's next in line for reinstatement of "popular democracy", welcomes them, declaring willingness to, quote "defend the integrity of the nation" while at the same time issuing a desperate plea for help to HATO countries
To complicate matters, de Gaulle comes out in support of the Czechs, hoping to drag HATO along into a war he believes the Soviet Union is ill prepared for.
You are an SBS team leader tasked with infiltrating Romania to ascertain the capabilities and intent of combined Romanian-Russian forces arrayed on the Danube, but you soon find out, not all is as it seems.

Imagine it, at the end of the 13 days JFK is forced to give the order to invade Cuba and remove the nukes. Cue war between USSR and the US. I'd say no nukes however because "lol MAD".

I'd literally make a red dawn mod of battlefield if I could. With no stupid bullshit made up weapons. Just AK74s, AK47s, M16s and the like, almost exclusively with ironsights. And online multiplayer would allow you to customize the appearance of your freedom fighter with all kinds of clothes, camo, vests, hats, Etc.

But probably like 1988 or something so everything was as modern as possible.
