What kind of steel plate? There are NIJ IIIa rated steel plates that are .2" thick and companies sell 3/16" AR500 plates as targets for you to shoot with pistols.

Why are you even thinking of using tread plate? You should be using a rated steel that will stop a rifle round. A786 is not really a good choice for ballistic purposes at all. Maybe you're thinking skid resistance =~ bullet resistance?

I've made small ballistic plates from Home Depot tier shitsteel plate and fiberglass to catch spallation. (Most) Pistol rounds are not very hard to stop

nah mate was just having fun.. I mean if you wanted to prevent spalling on an AR 500 plate what you get once again 1/8th inch of polycarbonate and use jb weld to affix it to the front.

While I know you want to do it yourself, body armor is something that if you fuck up, the results of it are really bad.

It would be better off just buying some soft body armor and wearing it under.
