Is it possible to have a truly free-floating barrel? For ideal accuracy, you want a barrel that has no actual physical contact with the rest of the firearm, right? Is this possible?
>>
Literally any free floated bolt action
>>
Just make the barrel the firearm, MetalStorm style. Bam.
>>
>>31909031
but the barrel is still in contact with the action and chamber
>>
>>31909042
Oh nevermind then you're just retarded. Sorry for posting in this thread
>>
>>31909024
Is that a fucking heat sink on that RFB?
>>
>>31909042
Are... are you serious?

Okay then, how about this.

1. toss a barrel up in the air
2. Pick up a rifle, precisely place a round right through the bore as it's still in mid air.

You now have a completely free floated barrel

kek
>>
So you want to levitate it with magnets or something?

Fund it.
>>
>>31909294
How much opposing magnetic force do you think it would take to keep the gun completely still even after it's fired?
>>
>>31909124
no that's a picitinny rail
>>
>>31909024

Just, i dont know, think about what you are asking. Because you must be stupid if you can't see the flaw in what you are asking.

So I guess you mean something like magnetic levitation or something suspending the barrel separate from the action. Except, such a system would STILL be exerting force from the handguard and if you fired a round it would just blow up.

The barrel has to be attached to the reciever and action.

Stop being stupid.

Magnetic force would be similar to holding it in place with rubber. This thread is autistic, in the bad way.
>>
>>31909313
This anon gets it
>>
>>31909310
No, that thing on the barrel.
>>
>>31909124

No, it's one of those accordion thingies you find on straws. You stretch it and it turns your 16" barrel into a 26" barrel.
>>
>>31909303

Except a system where the barrel is "floating" in a system of suspension magnets around it would be functionally the same as if the handguard was touching the barrel directly. The magnets would HAVE to be around the barrel, thus moored into the handguard. So it would be exactly he same, just with added magnets and stupidity.

It would literally be insanely more complex and vastly worse than a free floated barrel.

60% sure that's where the quad rail goes
>>
>>31909303
There's no way to keep it completely still, but given a certain amount of acceptable wiggle room you could probably figure out the required field strength based on barrel material, round fired etc by modelling it as a sinple proportional control system. If you have an active electromagnet and a method to accurately determine the position of the barell relative to its set point you could evem get some proportional and integral feedback to reduce oscillations and and barrel jitter
>>
>>31909347
So threads, still kinda serves as a heat dissipator though. Looks dumb either way. The RFB otherwise LOOKS like sex anyway.
>>
>>31909319
>>31909330
See
>>31909352

Its probably retarded to do it with permanent magnets but it might work with an active PID control system that works to keep the barrel still

>still want one
it hurts
>>
hurr durr but wut if you took a gun to space, then any barrel is free floating. GENYUS.
>>
>>31909385
Considering you can get 2 ARs for the price of ANY 308 battle rifle, that's not saying much. It's easy to find a RFB for around $1500 these days.

I'm really not sure if I should save up for it or just get a cheap ar so I'm /hasgunz/ instead of /nogunz/

They're great guns, but for your first rifle...? I mean, I love mine almost as much as my wife, but I think you may wanna get something else first.

>>31909435
If you live in an uncucked state, you can get a nice Ruger AR15 for ~650.

Alternatively, as a NYer, you can get Palmetto kits for a rifle after tax and all for ~$460, nothing fancy though

Also also, I don't even mean they'd be illegal, (immediately) necessarily, but you can expect more shortages/ panic buying.

No the barrel will make contact with the reciever for obvious reasons but having no other contact greatly reduces harmonic complications.
Imagine it like a a plastic tubing that you shake up and down. Thats pretty much what most pencil barrels look like in slow motion.
Germans used to solve this with a screw making contact to the barrel at a certain point so that the barrel would whip around a certain calculated point.
You can not (!) fleefloat certain mechanisms like a gas piston but can a conventional stoner gas system because the aluminium tubing is flexible enough to not interfere.
In general its easer to not freefloat them and simply calculate a contact point for the cycling mechanism but you restrict barrel lenght and thickness if you want the best possible accuracy.
Not that it matters that much as you likely wont be shooting your 5.56 past 2 or 3 hundred yards.
In general you can achieve night the same accuracy if the rifle is well set up but you have to keep in mind that past 1 MOA you will have a logarythmic (exponentionally worsening) bang for your buck as every system has its limits.
If you really want to look into the issues with semi auto precision rifles check out the PSG-1 and pic related.
If you are looking into an intermediate head over to /arg and ask for a comprehensive comparison between a gas piston, standard stoner and a freefloated one. ARs are because of their lego nature pretty good for all kind of comparisons.
