It's actually not my gun. Best friend since we were 10 grandpa passed and he's not really into funs and all that like a lot of us are on here but as I said, I don't know much about 1911s and he's just interested in learning about the gun, not necessarily how much it is worth
>>
Make sure he doesn't fucking touch it until he is educated at least. It's old as fuck, you'd be suprised how many ass holes try to clean them up or disassemble them and ruin them.

Tell him to buy a gun sock or something to store it in, be careful not to store it in a box or something without proper lubrication because it will rust and pit. If he's not interested in firearms just tell him to store it away and keep it for whenever he needs it, don't liste. To the other trolls saying to get rid of it.
>>
Thanks guys. I know he realizes that it's an heirloom and I'm not worried at all about him selling it or anything like that. I just wanted to havean angle to show him that he needs to cherish it and take care of it and to not part with it, if that makes sense

>tfw no /k/ grandpa to leave me guns when he dies
>>
>>31907170
He has the original holster, belt, and magazine pouch for it. Is he alright leaving it in the holster or would a case be better for it?
>>
>>31906629
Enjoy it now, you'll never possess it. Arms never go their rightfull owner.

keep the holster, belt, and mag pouch in a nice 2 tiered wooden box with the pistol, lubricated with a good teflon lube on top

Few made it back to the states because manufacturers had agreements with govt to give discounts in exchange for guarantee the guns wouldn't be imported back into US, competing with the gun makers new production guns. So most were either destroyed or donated to other countries. Today you can buy some of those rifles back using the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Pistols have never been available in CMP. So basically, very few 1911's came back from being actual issued war pistols. Lots of stories but only if you know the actual history of the weapon and trust the owners can you know it was a war pistol. Most that are advertised as such were simply never in war, were made here in the states and never left our country.

what are things that never happened Alex? when the US retired the 1911, they were inventoried, boxed up, and transferred to the post weapons depot, then shipped of to god knows where to await their ultimate fate. most likely they were demilled and smelted down.

My grandfather used to be pretty /k/. He owns a ranch and a construction company, as well as a cabinet full of guns. He used to take us shooting on the ranch all the time, and we'd wander around, climb the hills, explore through the brush, find arrow heads, and just operate.

He's had Parkinsons for around a decade. He became difficult to hold a conversation with around 5 years ago, and just slowed down more and more. He's been bed ridden for almost 2 years now, and rarely ever speaks. He's hooked up to oxygen and has delusions sometimes.

I look at him in that bed, and I can still see under his withered body the man that had me in his lap and taught me to drive a bulldozer, that showed me as a very young kid how to jump on a bed (much to the chagrin of my mother), and who taught me how to shoot and took me, my brother, and cousin all around his beautiful ranch, shooting, fishing, and exploring. The reality is that the man I knew is dead, or rather, imprisoned in a cage made of his own body.

God it hurts to see him like that. I want to cry every time.

Hey OP, do research on early 1911's and their heat treating process. That model is an early one where just the front end of the slide was treated, so don't shoot it. They can crack fairly easily. Nice find though.

Well, on the subject of grandpas and inherited guns.

>grandpa on my mother's side was an officer, in WW1- Austro-Hungarain army
>grandpa survived the entire war from start to finish. Through Serbia and onto the Isonzo front (basically imagine Passchendaele, the Somme or Verdun, add the Julian Alps as the battleground and you got yourself the Isonzo battles)
>since grandpa was an officer (I'm not quite sure if he was a Lieutenant or a Captain based on my mother's memories) he had a sword and sidearm which he kept polishing in his free time (again, based on my mother's memory and the help of google I figured out it was a Rast & Gasser M1870 or M1898) and he even brought back his Steyr Mannlicher rifle
>all of his war related stuff was kept in a large traveling chest/footlocker/whatever
>fast foward to well after the war and he gets married and has a kid. marriage goes to shit and he remarries, bringing his son over to the new family
>my mother is born and they live a good life in rural hungary
>his son becomes a border guard on the austrian border and he has to shoot a guy who pulls a gun on him. He never gets over it and becomes an alcoholic. Starts fucking everything up
>everything getting fucked to the point where the family is falling apart. Police won't do anything about it
>he takes all the money and shit away and starts selling stuff out of the house when he can't steal money from grandma and grandpa
>grandpa dies in 1974, probably because his son beat him up one time when he was drunk off his ass
>grandma dies in 1978
>mom says fuck this and leaves the house when the police come and lock the her half brother up for a few months, has the house demolished and sells the place to lose connection with him because she's the legal owner of it now. moves into a little comblock apartment.
>only one issue: she doesn't bring the chest with her to her new place because it was heavy and didn't think it would be valuable

>chest is left there in the house as it is demolished. Whatever happened to it and its contents is not known. Rifle, Pistol and A FUCKING OFFICER'S SWORD are lost forever. --gee thanks commie pacifist education--
>my fucking face when my mother told me this story

supposedly, gramps was 100% bro and shot the gun occasionally like on new year's eve (only a few rounds in the chest i guess) while keeping it in pristine condition all the time. There was one time where he chased his old wife around the village while firing it in the air because she fucked up some meal or something.

Funny thing is that mom's half brother was a great guy when he was sober according to her.
Don't turn into alcoholics, kids.

So yeah ameribros. Cherish your time you have with your grandpas, and cherish the guns and anything else they leave to you. I don't even dare to imagine what kind of horrors my own grandfather went through in those years with that rifle and pistol in hand. Some of them were probably in his letters and notebooks he kept in that chest, but alas thats all lost I don't even have a picture of my grandfather. Don't let the same happen to you.

also don't become alcoholic pieces of shit.
