Shoot until the assailant isn't a threat anymore. Whether it's one shot center-mass that kills them, or two shots center-mass that makes them give up, or if you empty three whole magazines in the fucker before he stops.

It's not about ending their life, it's about defending yours.

From personal experience, my father shot someone who was trying to invade his home, the guy had broken in the back door and dad was upstairs luckily, he heard it and grabbed his gun from the nightstand, he put three 9mm holes in the scumbag who unfortunately lived, albeit in a wheelchair for the rest of his days, the shitbird was found guilty and sent down but then tried to sue my father for shooting him, he lost but it took a couple of years to sort out, my father was told by more than one cop that in future just shoot them dead because it's easier that way.

What they teach is "shoot to stop, not to kill". If there's a reasonable belief that you kept shooting after the threat was no more (say, a descending entry/exit path from back to front at 45 degrees), you're going to jail.

So my take is - oh yes, shoot fast till they're still standing. In case you haven't tried that - train for it, it's more difficult than it seems.

Actually, I'd argue that putting two shots together (what they call "controlled pair") is no more difficult than putting three and more.

If you can shoot controlled pairs, you're fine, and you can follow that up by more.

Also, heard an interesting advice from a cop once - "Don't try to plant your shots too close, you might put all of them in an ineffective area. Spread them a bit".

I had to clean up a brutal murder scene when I was working for a carpet cleaning/installing crew.

By murder I mean this woman's boyfriend took a baseball bat to their dog and basically smashed all the bits into the carpet.

We got paid time and 1/2 because it had a biohazard rating.

All I'm saying is I hope I never have to put down an intruder in my place. There would just be so much cleaning up that would last a couple weeks not to mention the actual investigation that would last a month or more.

You are at risk for doing a two trigger pull of tapping of having the first shot be accurate while the second shot is a reactionary. You may think that the first shot is not as important as the second, it is actually the followup that is less precise due to the actual response from the target's reaction. In the end the first shot will always be the deciding hit of pacification while the second administers a merciful solution to the wounded target.
Try and take the target alive if necessary for further information.
In an alert situation you will have to keep on moving while relying on your ears, so get something that can assist you with that.
A mobility wounded target can be useful in drawing out other targets in which you must prioritize anything that has not be spotted and tracked before taking further action.
If anyone has a prying tool; like a hammer equipped, know that there are printed and glued label from the product manufacture that say misuse of that tool can be criminal offense by law.
