Hey /arg/, we all know about the meme that ARs are unreliable and break down all the time, but have you ever personally dealt with a shitty AR? Either one you bought or built, or one you fired (either a rental or a friend's gun or something). I was wondering if you have had a bad experience, where do you think the flaws are in the rifles that perform badly? Do you think it was a poor match up of parts? Bad machining? Improper maintenance?

Or have you never had a bad experience, even with a wide array of ARs of various makes and vintages?

Just wondering and looking for stories about common places to look to possibly predict a bad rifle.

My neighbor bought legit parts bin build from some rando off armslist and its a total piece of shit. My buddy built an AR that seemed to be over gassed and kept getting stuck cases. It was a mid length 16" barrel. We switched the gas block and that seemed to fix it.

I guess the problem with these non-factory AR-shaped objects is you have to do your own troubleshooting.

For an AR10 I'd do an 18" to 20" barrel, probably the latter. Keep it medium weight and stick a reasonably powerful scope on it for 600m, the longest shooting I can do here in central IL.

If I was going PSA, I would be getting their CHF stuff because FN barrels are quite good. Their stainless isn't awful though. I'd skip the Geissele mount if you aren't going to mate it to a rather high-end scope, and maybe pick a Larue or something in that bracket instead. Everything else is fine though honestly.

Having a bad AR these days is hard unless you are buying used parts, badly machined parts (from an bad dealer, rare these days really tho with so many choices)
Or possibly a bad finish and if u live in lots of humidity this can be killer. But good parts are so cheap, it's almost hard to imagine the ar15 built by someone competent, could have any malfunctions other than maybe a double feed or something that isn't nessisary the rifles fault. (Bad mags and bad ammo are almost 10:1 the problems I see on the ar platform)
If you are trying to look, look at the finish of the barrel, any rust on or in the barrel. Look at the wear on the trigger, the bolt carrier, and look at the feed ramps. They should look smooth and like perfect unsegmented cuts. If they aren't smooth or they look segmented or have a Crease that's bad. Look at the buffer weight for wear. look at the the tolerances of the rifle, a little play between the upper and lower is ok, a whole bunch isnt. Look at the barrel crown and inspect for any damage or uneven surfaces. You can buy Smith and Wesson cheap. But when It comes to vintage, new ones are generally more reliable. Avoid receivers vmade out of polymers.

I use the geissele mount now, was using a bobro, because PA had it on sale for 240$. Honestly, I dont like qd anymore because I hardly ever take the scope off, and this geissele mount is simple enough to remove.

The PA scope is actually really good. I like the reticle and find use for it when im setting up targets in the mountains. I had a vortex pst but when I used my friends PA, the clarity wasnt any different in my shitty eyes, and going from a 4x to 6x is definitly better

Picked the PSA upper because i like the dissipator look, and I never had a stainless AR barrel before. Its just as good as my DD CHF barrel.

I thought about switching the trigger out, but the RRA is pretty good, feels like my NM m1a trigger.

Oh, what i listed is my actual rifle set up(minus tlr1hl). Reason i didnt go for a more expensive scope is the reticle on the PA. I like the ranging.

I never shoot around people, and everyone around me is antigun so i end up buying shit, then if it doesnt work, buy something that does. Just wanted a second opinion on my set up. My buddy has an Easy Jig he plans to sell me, he said it was about an hour of work to finish with the jig. I'd say thats worth the bit of work to save 20 bucks a pop on a transfer.
