Rumor is that Turkey wants Mosul.

What would that war look like? Turkey vs Iraq. Would Russia get involved? What sort of gear would we see being used?

I'm pretty sure Turkey would become like Iran-tier isolated inside of a week.

Like, the US might actually get pissed enough to 1991 them out of Iraq if asking nicely doesn't work.
>>
Meh. Let them take the muslim burden. Nothing of value would come of it. They just want to be Ottomans again
>>
It would be pretty bad for the kurds.
>>
Maybe this time around the western powers finish what they started in WWI and burn Turkey to the ground along with its population of savages.
>>
>>31893291
Also, thats a good map.
>>
isnt that northern part of iraq mainly inhabited by kurds? why the hell would turkey want even more kurds when they can barely control the ones they already have?
>>
>>31894073
They really want a solution that avoids an independent Kurdish nation in northern Iraq and Syria. Eating a chunk of north Iraq would allow them to bomb the shit out of Kurds and kill them as a purely domestic matter, rather then needing to pretend it's attacking Isis.
>>
>>31893964
But isn't Turkey in NATO?

Iraq is not. If US attacked a NATO country which side would the rest of NATO join? Presumably the aggressor would be attacked in retaliation by the remaining alliance members.
>>
>>31894131
Article 5 says you back up members that are attacked, you don't have to do shit about them attacking anyone else. The retaliation would be economic, not military. It's not like the EU and US don't have a gigantic amount of leverage to make Turkey do what they want.
>>
>>31894131
It'd presumably be like Cyprus in the 70s where everyone just sits on their hands and lets shit happened.

But yeah, the US would be significantly angry.

We've fought three fucking wars in Iraq, and we do not intend to let a bunch of kebabs shaft us out of getting a satisfying resolution to that shit.
>>
>>31893291
What are Turkish domestic news outlets saying? There's few independent ones left after the coup attempt, so they should all be following the government line, and if Turkey really wants to take Mosul they'll need to be telling their domestic population something.
>>
>>31894026
You're kidding right. In a sectarian conflict the west would side with Sunnis, regardless of whether you like them of not. Look at the house of saud
>>
>>31894158
>>31894245
Interesting, so Turkey could just go in, take Mosul, and suffer no military consequence. As far as economic sanctions I don't see that having much effect especially considering the fact that since the coupe they have been distancing themselves from the EU and USA in favor of Russian and Asian trade. Both players that would likely side with them or at least remain neutral if they attempted to take Mosul.
>>
>>31894327
>As far as economic sanctions I don't see that having much effect

Turkey would collapse as a nation under aggressive European sanctions, never mind US. Granted, the US and EU don't want that to happen.

They could seize Mosul, but the US and EU would make it ruinously expensive as a punishment.
>>
>>31894026
Nah, just let Greece retake Istanbul.
>>
>>31893291
That's bullshit, but I believe it
>>
>>31894372
Why would the EU sanction Turkey because of Mosul?
>>
>>31895180
Because Turkey is part of NATO and Europe would not like the idea of one of their "allies" aggressively expanding into other countries.
>>
>>31895180
EU and USA dislike the idea of Kurdish genocide, they've had problems with Turkey about that before.
>>
>>31895360
Yep, if Turkey makes a power play I'm pretty sure the Kurds are gonna start finding stingers and TOWs lying around...
>>
>>31895414
Probably not. We kept the Kurds around because they were a thorn in Saddams side, and now in ISIS. But they're also very socialist and we can't have socialists with oil now can we? Plus the Saudis don't like them. So if Turkey can solve that problem for us, we aren't gonna put up more than lip service to stop it.
>>
>>31895180
also, if we let Turkey take land in the Middle East it would give legitimacy to Putin and his desire to roll back for Soviet territories into the Russian sphere of influence
>>
>>31895515
The US has always traditionally supported the Kurds and they were key allies in the second Iraq War. The only reason nothing more is done is because Turkey keeps throwing shitfits about it but if Turkey tries biting off the lease, I'm readonably sure the US can use military support to the Kurds or even officially recognizing a Kurdish state as leverage.
>>
>>31895515
We've always been allies with them. T B H senpai political affiliation didn't really matter during the Cold War, just if whoever you supported was going to contain the Soviet Union. Look at Yugoslavia, going into the 60s most of their equipment was NATO standard or at least heavily upgraded by NATO countries.
>>
>>31893291
I'm sorry, but the idea of Turkey annexing a chunk of Iraq is absolutely preposterous. What the fuck are you smoking?
