Is it true that if you buy a 1911 under $3000 that you have to immediately take it to a gunsmith to get it worked on or is that a joke?

Yes, it was really bad during WWII since most were too poor to afford it so they often used captured Lugers or Nambus.

Absolute meme tier advice that needs to die propagated by Glock fangirls.

I've bought a chink shit 1911 for $250 NEW in 2014. It runs like a top.

The only difference between a $200 1911 and a $2000 1911 is fit finish and a bit of accuracy.

Spend the money on ammunition and good magazines instead.
>>
>>31890556
if it's not a $5,000 wilson combat custom piece you're just gonna end up spending the difference anyway just to get it up and running. it's like building a top tier gaming PC cept more expensive.
>>

bought a springfield 1911 range officer recently it works great out of the box cost $840 did not have to get it worked on at all, and don't know why you would have to.

>>31890556
What the fuck are you autists even talking about? I picked up a fucking $700 Colt Mark IV/Series 70 and for the life of me, I can't think of a single goddamned good reason to go after a Wilson or Kimber that costs two to five times as much. Its a fucking handgun. If you're expecting accuracy at over 100 yards, you're a fucking retard who doesn't understand what a handgun is for. If you're expecting reliability, well, a little dab of oil will square things away. I've never experienced a malfunction with my Colt that wasn't directly related to ammo.

I know several friends who have RIA .45 1911s, and they're every bit as reliable as my Colt. I have a RIA 10mm, and I've never had a problem with it. A 1911 is a 1911 and its just as good as every other 1911, no matter what the company or price point.

>>
>>31890556

No. First of all, Les Baer makes 1911s as good as Wilson for ~$2000.

Second of all, fuck spending that much money, just put 500-1000 rounds through yours and learn how to use a hard Arkansas stone properly.

PS I use Kimber magazines.
>>
>>31890556
I bought a 500 dollar cimarron 1911 a few years ago; it works great and the high-luster blue finish looks great. I even had a gun smith look at it once and he remarked on how nice the tolerances were for being 500 dollars. I only have one complaint with it: If you shoot steel case ammunition in a one-handed limp-wristed style, it stovepipes.

Pic related was the first pistol I bought back when I was an absolute fudd. I knew nothing about 1911s notoriously jamming with HP ammo, so I fed it a ton when I first bought it when I was shooting pumpkins and gourds. I never had any FTFs at all, and after about 2,500 rounds total I've yet to have any kind of other malfunction.
>>
>>31890556
That's bullshit. More guns have been ruined by incompetent gunsmiths than by anything else.
>>
>>31890556
Utter horseshit. Any of the well-known makers produce 1911's that run fine. The Philippino and Turkish 1911's *might* need to get sent in for warranty work, but even that's the exception not the rule. The American companies are basically all 100% soild.

Funny story, guy came into my shop yesterday, wanted to buy the Springer GI we've got for sale. I made him an offer. He came back this morning, said his "gun guru" buddy told him he wouldn't pay more than 300 for it.

Neato. I want to travel to this mystical land where Springfield 1911's cost less than Glocks.

He said what he really wanted was a stainless Remington 1911. I told him good luck. Nice guy, but... C'mon, dude.
>>
1911 is a more a fashion accessory than a gun anyway. What practical advantage does it have over modern designs?

>choosing a gun because it's "cool"
>>
>>31894078
>What practical advantage does it have over modern designs?

Mine sees the most use of any of my pistols because I like shooting it the most. I carry it exclusively when the weather cools down because I'd rather be using something I've put several thousand rounds through and love holding in my hands.
>>
>>31894111
Good for you, you have a gun you like shooting because you love how it feels. I feel the same way about the M1A, but I'm not delusional about its real-world practicability. Just like the 1911, it was a good gun-for its time. Actually, scratch that. The M14 was never really good but it is cool.
>>
>>31894153
If I can put shots on target after drawing better with it than any of my other pistols am I being delusional about its real-world practicability?
>>
>>31894111
>I like it
not a practical reason.

They have shitty magazines, are very finicky with ammo (hate hollowpoints) and only the fattest of asses can conceal them. If a modern gun had these flaws, /k/ would rightfully be slamming it as a garbage design.
>>
>>31894078
At a certain point you run out of practical purposes for a new gun purchase.
Then you start buying things because you like them or find them interesting. Crazy, huh?
>>
>>31894169
See >>31894163

I've never had any problem with feeding HPs, and I'm 6'3" 240 lbs because squatz n oatz every day. My 1911 fits my needs, I don't care if it doesn't fit yours.
>>
>>31894163
That just means that you practice with it more than any other pistol - because you like shooting it the most and love holding it.
>>
>>31894192
And your point is?

I'm proficient with the weapon. Why wouldn't I want to carry it?
>>
>>31894214
My point is that you're being entirely subjective.

But whatever, you love your 1911. Godspeed, anon. I hope it doesn't fail you when you need it most.

>>31894231
I didn't know there was an objectively "best" firearm. I don't think the 1911 is the be-all end-all pinnacle of pistol design. But it's a lot more than just a fashion accessory.

>I hope it doesn't fail you when you need it most.

That's why I carry it ya dingus.
>>
>>31894181
Oh, I know all about non-practical collecting.

But a carry weapon is an inherently practical thing. Pretty, cool, love, impress others etc shouldn't be a consideration. Reliability, accuracy, and concealability are the main, practical concerns. You may get 1 of those 3 out of the 1911, but always at a sacrifice of the other 2.
>>
>>31894284
Did a 1911 walk up and slap your girl's ass in the club or what anon?
>>
>>31894336
lolno I guess I went off on a tangent.

Sure, the 1911 is fun to collect or have as a range toy, and they definitely are appealing in the looks department. Like an M1 they are infused with WWII cool.

I just wouldn't trust my life to one, is all I'm saying.

Toss it in a bucket of sand/dirt and drop your mags on concrete a few times and get back to me. The only way to get accuracy out of a 1911 is to tighten up the tolerances. Tight slide = shit gets in there and jams it. Loose 1911's will eat shit and still fire, but they aren't accurate...because they're loose to the point that they rattle when you shake them.

And the only reason you can conceal it is because you're built like fucking LBJ.
>>
>>31894475
>I know nothing about 1911s, the post

Also, I wasn't aware that EDC involved mucking through sand and mud. My mistake.
>>
>>31894475
Why would I carry my pistol around in a bucket of sand? I can afford a holster. Am I supposed to play craps with my magazines before an assailant and I formally draw our weapons? I don't understand the point you're trying to make anon.
>>
>>31893173

Caught cases shooting out.

So far, no jams or problems.

How's modern Colt? I was thinking of getting a series 70 Government from them at some point if the constant bankruptcies and other problems haven't ruined their ability to make a gun without horrible QC issues.
>>
>>31896765
Colt is gtg.

They're just a bit expensive for their offerings these days. For how much a Colt runs, you can get a Springfield with comparable features to whichever Colt you like for a bit less. Although the finish on Colts is definitely nicer.

A FAL or FAL clone
A gucci AR
A good AK
Milsurp bolt in 7mm/8mm/etc

A Sig

A bullpup
