Technique will almost always beat out brute strength. You want to inflict as much damage as efficiently and quickly as possible. Krav Maga is a good thing to read up on and take training on if available. Training in Stickfighting wouldn't be a bad idea either. It would give you a basic understanding of how to approach someone who has a long blunt weapon.
