What caliber should I use if I want to stop a car by firing on its engine? Will 9mm suffice?

(Pic unrelated)

>>31872213
In one shot, 50. BMG will do the job just fine
>>
>>31872213
.338 would be iffy. I'd say it's the bottom line.
>>
>>31872213
.22lr

Once it hits, it'll just bounce around inside.
>>
>>31872213
308 will stop a car
>>31872268
>>31872284
Those would work better. Either way you will render an engine inoperable with "one shot" this doesn't mean stopping a car, but it will stop an engine. To stop a car you need 30mm HE
>>
7.62x39 with the import-banned Chinese Norinco steel core. You can find it, but it's about $1 a round.

Seen it first-hand on an old v-6 that was already out of the car. It will breech cylinder walls, crank-case, etc.

>>31872308
kek
>>
>>31872374
What? Any surplus with a steel core will do exactly the same thing. Less than 20 cents a round last time I bought 1000
>>
>>31872213
.30-06 steel core, or 8mm Mauser.
>>
>>31872213
SS109 does a number on engine blocks
>>
I think M2 ball (30.06 mild steel core) would be fine.

12 gauge hand loaded with thermite. Be sure to get the inside of your barrel coated with ceramics.

This is all just a theory of course.
>>
>>31873683
>12 gauge hand loaded with thermite. Be sure to get the inside of your barrel coated with ceramics
Wouldn't that ruin the rifling? (shotguns still have rifling right?)
And the pellets would take a bit of ceramic with them when they leave
>>
>>31873713
Depends on the shotgun in question. You can get a rifled barrel (for slugs, known as a slug barrel) or a smooth bore (normal barrel, usually for shot). If you used a smoothbore it would probably be fine. I doubt it'd be in the bore long enough to fuck up the gun.
>>
>>31873713
Use a smooth bore and who said anything about pellets?

>12 gauge hand loaded with thermite.

Obviously you've never used thermite before and you don't sound like you are trolling either. Seriously, thermite is not some unstoppable end-all composition.

First, it's really hard to set off reliably (I once spent 20 mins trying to set off 12lbs of thermite with magnesium wire and sparklers). You would need to come up with a fuzing system that would work reliably at various ranges.

Second, you would have to come up with a way to keep the payload in one piece throughout its flight and impact. Once it hits a hard surface, it's just going to disintegrate before it can ignite from the massive amount of force put on it .

Third, the amount that you would be able to fit into a shell would just be enough to scorch the paint if you were lucky. I think the popular ShootingEggs video that came out in the mid 2000s (every single one of those videos were staged) has a lot of people mislead. No, you aren't going to melt a hole though a frying pan and 1/2" steel plate with a Red Bull can filled with the stuff. A beverage can of thermite is an incredibly inefficient method of delivery and you will only end up with a hot molten mess on top of the plate.

tldr: Thermite is greatly overrated
>>
>>31872213
.50 AE from a Desert Eagle. The Israelis developed it to do just that.
>>
>>31874478
I tend to use metal sparklers and have ran into issues before. People seem to think that it is illegal to make thermite. People also seem to think it does something other than just burn really hot.

I agree, thermite is greatly overrated.

This was literally what .50 Beowulf was designed for.

Similar question: What caliber would be enough to disable an engine by shooting the carburetor or intake manifold? Also, couldn't you just shoot the timing chain/belt with any gun?
>>
>>31875219
Carb? Are you shooting a lawn mower or a Harley?

>will 9mm stop a car
This is the stupidest shit I've seen on k today
>>
>>31875219
Manifolds these days are generally cast aluminum or plastic, cars haven't used carburetors since the early 90s but they're also usually aluminum too.

Good luck hitting any of that though, shit changes location between every different car, and unless the car is sitting still with the bonnet open, you're not going to be able to aim for shit.

Instantly disabling a car engine is best done with a high powered rifle shot. If you just want to stop a car running without any urgency, a hole in the sump or radiator will do the trick, even a .22 will manage that.

That's what my 10mm hardball costs.

Damn I have 1000 rounds of this I bought back about 20 years ago with an SKS at gun show. Paid about $400 for the lot.

Depends on which part of the manifold you hit, too, and some manifolds are behind the engine so you'd have to get through the rocker cover to land a hit. That's not to mention the fact that a car bonnet is a pretty shallow angle for a bullet to penetrate.

Here's an example of a Corolla, the part in red is the intake manifold. If you hit it, you've already shot through the valvetrain, so the engine is dead already.
>>
>>31877946
>>31875728
And here's a rough idea of where you'd have to shoot if you want to hit the intake manifold on a V8 or V6 Suburban. The top half of your target is a very steep angle thanks to the bonnet, the bottom half of the target will have at least a radiator and air conditioner condenser in the way, which is ~3-4 cm of aluminium, so that'll rob a fair bit of velocity from a low power bullet.

By the time the car is close enough that you've got a guaranteed shot at the manifold, it'll have enough momentum to keep going at a good pace even if you kill the engine. If it's not going very fast, then why not shoot the driver or tires?

I honestly don't see any kind of scenario where targeting the intake manifold makes sense. Yes, it will disable the engine (unless it's a diesel), but if you're hitting the intake then you've probably already dumped at least half a mag into the rest of the engine bay already.

You don't need to shoot a hole in the engine block. A hole in the soft radiator, one of the wheels/tires, or in the driver would be enough to stop any vehicle.

The diesel would die as well wouldn't it? MASSIVE vacuum leak would cause anything to start running lean and then have potential to blow up. If the vacuum leak was big enough you would be so far out of stochiometric ratio it might not pop off at all anymore.....but I just work on gasoline motors so what do I know
