Went to academy yesterday and they had no 22 and had several holes in the ammo shelf. Then I went to Cabelas and they had 22 but no bulk boxes

A lot of those ammos are made in cycles. Say Prvi has so many machines for ammo - they'll make certain calibers certain times of the year.

So they might make 8mm mauser for a few months, 7.5 french for a few months, 6.5 carcano for a few months, 8x56 for a few months, etc. Change out the tooling, make a batch, then repeat process.

That's why centerfire ammo demand could be met easily (on 223/9mm/etc) but rimfire demand hasn't really caught up - need different machines for rimfire, and then companies don't want to buy machines if the demand eventually goes back down
