I live in a state where it is legal to open carry a loaded firearm while engaged in, or going to and from, Fishing, Hunting, and Camping. However I cannot open carry all the time due to said law. Me and a couple of guys from work have talked about having an open carry fishing trip but one of us always backs out and than the whole group follows. Honestly I want to open carry but I am to scared to. I can legally conceal carry and do so everyday. I even house carry and have a loaded gun next to me while I sleep. I do it out of necessity, because I can't get my CPL for another year yet (you can OC if you're under 21 in MI). I totally agree with the whole "making yourself a target" thing, but given that I'm more likely to encounter a drunk hick looking for a fight than a school shooter or some shit, there's some genuine utility as a deterrant. Still requires quite a bit of discretion, though.
It also helps that my holster is rather unassuming to look at. That's one of the nice things about a lot of milsurp holsters, actually. If you're not actively looking for it, it just looks like I have a slightly weird tool belt on.

I plan on switching over to CC full-time once I get my CPL, but I might still OC around town. The damn holster is too comfy.

So far, the only comment I've gotten on it was some wehraboo who wanted to fondle my "Luger".

I don't feel any real need to OC even though it's legal, short or long arm, loaded or not.
That said, I have no qualms about doing so to/during/from pertinent activities simply as a matter of convenience, range/hunting/outdoors or innawoods things. I've never had any issues when stopping anywhere along the way for food or anything else, frequently going into the grocery store to get snacks or gas, etc.
If I thought open carrying was going to enlighten or sway anyone towards civil rights or offered any real benefit beyond increased comfort, which comes at the cost of exposure, then sure why not.
It is nice to have the legal ability to do either though, can't get in trouble if a LE feels a jacket is covering it too much or too little.

Texas is bullshit, all the insufferable douche bags came out to play with open carry after we switched to LTC instead of CHL. I would almost rather require carrying a pistol concealed than openly. But I respect our state's law and not everyone is a massive faggot.

Not a Ny'er but I would advise against going into buildings, even if you think they are abandoned. If you are armed, most states can up a warning/misdemeanor trespassing violation to felony trespass, or possibly worse.

If the buildings are on State owned land, that you can legally target shoot on, your best course of action would be to contact the local DNR and ask them. I would also want it in writing from the officer even if they told you it was ok to do.
