Well I guess with a little innovation this could comically fire regular chicken and noodle soup at your attacker.

You'd have a hell of a time getting the terminal ballistics worked out. To start with, you're going to have a hard time getting any accuracy with the lack of a barrel seal, so you'd need to use something like an old black powder miniball system with wadding to get you a good seal, but considering the diameter, you're basically talking about a napoleonic-era field cannon.

Then you have the shape of the can being un-aerodynamic for one, making it prone to tumbling. You could overcome this with some sort of rifling setup, but that's going to require a lot of custom machining and potentially custom cans, making the whole thing a lot less appealing.....maybe some sort APFSDS-style discarding sabot and stabilizing fins?

Well I've heard a lot of potato cannons using gas combustion. I'm very concerned about a cans stability or even it leaving the barrel in one piece.

Powered by air is your best bet. Otherwise nitrogen or something inert or can stay as a gas at room temperature.

Never use CO2 as its most usable form is at low temps. CO2 will cause brittleness in many materials.

Soup cans would probably hold up better than soda, because they don't have the extra air in them allowing the contents to slosh around. Also, probably more structural rigidity than the thin aluminum. Some sort of wadding to act as an intermediary would probably prevent most catastrophic can failures like the bottom rupturing in the barrel.

But you gotta admit, that'd be a hell of police writeup if you shot someone with a lethal blast of chicken, broth, and steel can shards.

Well assuming a regular can is about half a pound give or take pressurized air would be great for keeping the can in one piece.
Designing will have to be done and I'm actually planning on possibly making this or a prototype.
