They're my favorite mainstream knife brand. There are a number of reasons, but by far the biggest one is the Axis Lock. I really appreciate the ability to open and close the blade one-handed, without putting my fingers in the blade path or having to change my grip much, and that it works great with gloves on. I also like their fit and finish and the materials they use, for example I like Benchmade's G10 better than any other brand I've tried.

That's not to say that I'm a fanboy who thinks they do no wrong, though. They make a lot of decisions that are hard to understand, like how my EDC 484-1 is much heavier than it needs to be because BM didn't bother to skeletonize the steel liners. Another example is that they released a couple of bearing pivot knives this year, but the flipper is a low-end model with 154cm, G10, and a liner lock, and the gorgeous titanium framelock they released isn't a flipper.

To clarify a bit more, I'm probably going to go for the trifecta of Higo no Kami, peasant knife, Opinel no.8 and see where it takes me, hopefully I'll like one of them.
>>
>>31858635
>but is it at least somewhat comfortable
I think it's pretty comfortable. It's essentially a rounded comma shape.

>What are your opinions on the action itself?
Convenient. You can use the tail to open the knife one-handed.

>Do you feel that it can fit comfortably in a pocket?
Yeah, but I have the mini version. The full size may be less pocketable.

>>31858767

>I've never liked Opinels, do they have any redeeming qualities?
Extremely efficient cutting geometry. They're a lot thinner than most modern pocket knives, and therefore are very good slicers.

The "lock" isn't actually that strong, but it's actually pretty good at preventing accidental disengagements

>>31858866
>I've read the Higo no Kami is laminated steel
The basic ones are just simple carbon steel.

>The grip on it looks super uncomfortable as well
It kinda is. It's just a thin sheet of brass or steel, so it digs in if you're using it for more than light use (not that you would).

If you want a representation of a Japanese knife, I'd go with pic related. It's a Japanese craft knife that are pretty common for general purpose use. I don't have one, but I reckon it'd be more comfortable than the Higo. Only downside is that it doesn't have quite as much history.

If you don't mind fixed blades, you could also look for a kiradashi.

Now if they would just make a 2mm spine model fully FFG from the factory, then I wouldn't have to pay for regrinds.

A 2mm spine Mora fully reground to FFG in carbon steel does a pretty damn good imitation of a custom fixed blade for really cheap.
>>
>>31860386
They do make a few in stainless, the Mora Flex and Fillet series are 1.3mm FFG and I'm pretty sure all their butcher series are FFG.
>>
>>31860736

It's my understanding that the fillet and flex are heat treated differently to increase flex, and Mora hardens their stainless blades less to begin with.

I would it but carbon for Moras because I want the higher hardness and finger grain and don't care about wear resistance.
>>
>>31860766
In the fillet series you can choose hardness/flex, not sure about the butcher series though but yeah, no carbon FFG
>>

King_1K_Muddy_vs_NoMud.jpg
2MB, 1600x1200px
So I thought I might show you guys something interesting. Pic related is a combination of two images taken with a USB microscope at ~400x of a knife edge sharpened on a King 1000 waterstone.

On the right side is the scratch pattern left on the knife if the stone is used with no mud/slurry on it at all.

On the left side is the scratch pattern left when the SAME stone is used with a thick mud on it.

You can see that the scratch pattern on the left is clearly finer and less directional than the one on the right, and this is because the mud on the stone caused three body abrasion where the loose grit in the slurry rumbles in random directions as you make passes, leaving a randomized and therefore finer scratch pattern.

Another neat side effect of three body abrasion is that it becomes much harder to form a large burr because that mud is slapping into the apex on each pass, slightly rounding it over (but abrading the burr as a result).

This effect is why I always advocate for muddy stones. The King 1000 BOTH cuts faster muddy AND leaves a finer finish.
>>
>>31862310
By mud you mean the slurry or you want me to go get some mud from nature?

If the latter youre gonna have to get your ass to /out/ because this is a weapons board, kid
>>
>>31860869
This is a solid choice, the poor mans sebenza from sanrenmu runs 11-18 bucks on amazon and its a great little pocket knife.
>>

I mean the slurry from the stone obviously, which is also called "mud" since stones that release a lot of it are often called "muddy"

I want a cute knife that is at least as smooth opening as my griptillian. Axis-like lock would be a great plus, I like opening it by loading the lock and swinging it open, no touchy thumb piece.
Knife will see very light use, mostly opening coffee bags. Chisel/hollow or no-secondary grind would be very sweet for maximum but not lasting sharpness, I want the coffee bag plastic to not even move while I slice it open.

Spyderco manix 2 LW fits yo best m8
>>
>>31868480
It's a big knife though and while I love mine, I don't think it qualifies as cute, the missus thinks Shuffles look great but didn't like my Manix at all.
Maybe a Sage would qualify a bit better, similar in lock style, slightly heavier than the LW but 3/4 of an inch shorter.

To be honest though I don't think the knife he's looking for exists as the only folders with cutting geometry like he's looking for are older carbon steel folders like Svord Peasants and various thin slip joint knives, any modern folder with something resembling an Axis lock will have modern geometry with at best ~.020" behind the edge which is miles away from a zero grind.

He could always look at a regrind of an existing Benchmade, maybe one of the D2 models.

If he can live without an axis type lock, the Spyderco Chaparral (2mm spine FFG) or Delica (2.5mm spine FFG with an aggressive distal taper) are probably as close as you can get on a modern production folder.

Even then, you'd really need to thin out the primary grind to maximize the performance in that kind of use. An Opinel is thin enough but the blade steel isn't that hard so it would need to be touched up frequently.

Thinning out the primary grind on a knife by hand isn't that difficult, it's just a little time consuming. I've done it several times using a Norton Crystolon coarse (~90 grit) charged with the grit from a TASK garden hone (~36 grit).

Pic related is an Endura FFG thinned out a fair bit.

I don't know why you're surprised. The two knives in the first photo you quoted are worth around $600-700 put together.

>>31874539
>made in china
China is a lot better at knife manufacturing now than it was when it gained its dubious reputation.

A lot of knife companies make their cheaper knives there and send their own guys to do the quality control. You can get $20-30 knives that are a lot better than their price would indicate.

>>31873726
I don't know why you're surprised when the Busse and the Chris Reeves knife in the photo you quoted are both worth $300+ each.
>>
>>31873255

True, but I've never thought that s30v was a very sensible choice for such a thin grind. I really hope they eventually do a true zero ground Nilakka in a high speed steel that will resist having the heat treatment damaged in manufacturing better.
>>
>>31873294

Okay, can someone explain to me what you would use such a short, chisel -ground, dual edged knife for?

Is there some sort of application for this design I am overlooking?

Because that looks incredibly useless to me.
>>
>>31874539
Well you're not going to find many manufacturers that make as thin as Spyderco, unless you start looking at older style slip joints and the like, hence my suggestion of Spyderco. As to the China comment, China makes a large portion of the world's goods including some very nice knives(Kizer/WE knives/Rike knives etc) you don't have to like it but it's not going to stop and when you're looking at the lower end of the market you can directly trade labour costs for material improvements and if it's from a major company you still get the warranty support.
>>
>>31874539

Spyderco actually does full QC on their Chinese made knives so I wouldn't worry about it being made in China in this case.

Reviews on major online knife retailers like KnifeCenter and BladeHQ are always shit. Mostly shillls, but also a couple of dumb fudds that bought a cool looking knife and just spoke their mind on it (when probably half of them don't even know how to use it properly).
But damn. VG-10 just isn't good enough for me to warrant $150. And checking on Spyderco's website, it's also on their "collectable" portion so there likely won't be a version 2. Fuck me.

Don't worry about it, just use the stone with the unchipped corners closest to you and flatten it frequently and eventually you'll get below the chip anyway.
