Is there a better improvised weapon than a forest axe, hatchet, splitting mall, or carpenters axe?

A dog.

Its spelled maul my friend

But I agree with you. An axe is a fine weapon. I always carry the hatchet my father gave me as a boy when I go innawoods. It was the best thing he ever gave me.

Yeah sorry about that, it's almost 5:30 am and I haven't slept yet

Really depends on what your definition of improvised weapon is.

I would rather have a crowbar.

Axes have a large dead zone. They are also top heavy. You miss by a few inches and you're either swinging wide or giving them the shaft.

On top of that they can get stuck in objects easily. Same reason why they didn't sharpen cavalry sabers. Getting the blade stuck in something could end you and the force of the blow alone is enough.

A good pry bar or crow bar are relatively light now a days. They have the curved tip that can be used the same way as an axe head in the sense of grapple an object of person. That same curved tip can easily be held onto if you need to thrust it at someone or to act as a hand block so it doesn't slip out of your hands in wet environments.

A crowbar is far easier to take out of a sack or backpack as it's smooth and straight. You don't have to worry about covering the blade to prevent it from cutting things and you don't have to take a sheath off to use it.

Rust on an axe is bad and rot is even worse. Rust on a crowbar is natural and a big slab of metal doesn't rust.
>>
>>31830986
>Same reason why they didn't sharpen cavalry sabers

nah, you're wrong.
>>
>>31830993
Why would you sharpen your sabre when the blunt force combined with the momentum of the horses did sufficient damage to the person?

Do you want it to get stuck in the gun stock and have yourself yanked from your house?
>>
>>31830986
>didn't sharpen their sabres

>>
>>31830986
The thing about the cavalry swords is autistic, but what would a mute scientist know about cavalry practices...

I see your point about the crowbar, and it is fair, but a solid bar like that has no give to it really doing some damage to the user's hands if it is used enough. I'd take the ax, but the crowbar is a good second choice
>>
>>31830765
Well to be fair there getting harassed by the news after having your kid shot would piss me off too. Especially considering this was an ACTUAL case of dindu, getting shot at a graduation party by a nig-nog.
>>
Axes are great for utility, not so great for interpersonal relations. They're too unwieldy and telegraphing to smack someone that isn't unawares something good.

With a standard grip, anyway. Choking all the way up to the head lends it some credence.
>>
I feel like a guy armed with a chair would defeat a guy armed with a hatchet every single time.
>an axe is a lethal weapon
>as such, you would use it with the intent to kill
>almost anyone here wouldn't just butcher people for any reason due to the consequences that follows after manslaughter
>as such, an axe wielder would be very careful and reserved in a fight
>a chair is a non lethal (potentially lethal) weapon
>a guy would charge with a chair or just throw it with very little hesitation
>chairs outrange axes
>a chair slammed into your chest is gg

It's the same idea with a baseball bat or golf stick. As long as you avoid the head, the hits will be nonlethal. Someone using a golf stick would smash the fuck out of an axeman.
>>
>>31830742
A man with an ax only needs one swing to take a dog out of a fight
>>
>>31831149
>>almost anyone here wouldn't just butcher people for any reason due to the consequences that follows after manslaughter
>>as such, an axe wielder would be very careful and reserved in a fight
Where are you getting this logic from? If someone attacks me in the woods I'm going to chop them like a fucking cherry tree
>>
golfclub. maybe a putter
relatively light, sturdy grip, can pack hell of a punch in a small area. can be wielded two- and onehanded
>>
>>31831175

Those rods aren't solid metal you know. They will bend right around anything that is solid.

A long axe is useless unless you have room to charge at the victim.
A short hatchet inflicts far more fear, it is also easier to swing fast.
>>
>>31830737
Get me my ax.
>>
>>31830737
Is it really an improvised weapon?

I mean, axes have been used in combat for centuries. Just because a particular ax has a different stated use doesn't necessarily make it an "improvised" weapon when used as such.

I have one of these in my bedroom for those occasions when I can't get to my gun locker (I live in a Eurofag nation which requires you by law to keep your guns locked, secured and unloaded). It wields like an axe and has a sharper and bigger blade better suited for slashing as well as hacking. Billhooks are an underrated improvised melee weapon.
>>
>>31831215
Maybe not, but they pack enough force to break bones and generally fuck someone up. It's a solid object after all.
>>
>>31831365

>I have one of these in my bedroom for those occasions when I can't get to my gun locker
For what purpose? You´re a limp-wristed weakling who honestly believes the boys in blue can prove that firearms in your posession were or were not secured (FYI: a safe is enough if you have 5 or more firearms; in other cases, sticking them in the closet, unloaded, is acceptable in the eyes of the law) prior to you using them in defense of yourself or others - you don´t pose a serious threat to a home intruder.
>>
>>31830737
I used to have two different models of grande's for home defense. I moved and they got lost in the move.

Now I have a couple melee weapons. Because I don't trust myself with a gun. So I carry a mace. Its just a short closet rod with a bike peg jammed on it.
>>
>>31832307
It's because in Funland where if you use a gun to defend yourself and your assailant doesn't have one your in for a shitton of legal hassle.
>>
>>31830960
Completely improvised? Definitely a spear. A good wood axe isn't much of an improvised weapon IMO
>>
>>31830737
Depends on how improvised you need to be. Anything blunt and durable which you can club someone with works, ideally something easy to handle like a small hammer, heavy torchlight or umbrella.

>>
>>31830986
A saber is a slashing blade, not for hacking. Of course you'd want it sharp. And correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have an axe imbeded in your opponent, I think you've won the engagement, or at least reduced his lethality enough to deliver the coup d'gras with a handy cast iron skillet
>>
>>31830859
Tell us why?
Kek
>>
>>31831023

Because you do not have momentum of a horse for most of the slashing and stabbing moves to be used while on horseback.

You really do not have much experience about real historical cavalry sabres do you? I have some which were actually used in war(s) - and they are wickedly sharp.

Probably helps if it's something useful enough that you'd actually have it on you by accident a lot of the time.

Some folks call it a Sling Blade, I call it a Kaiser Blade. It's kindly a wood handle, kind of like an axe handle. With a long blade on it shaped kinda like a bananer. Mhm

Cavalry sabre =/= Fencing sabre
>>
>>31830986
Cite your source on the saber thing.

Only thing I could think of is when they were issued out blunt and only sharpened when they expected combat. The Russians in particular would wait until right before, and had been caught a few times by surprise and later the enemies discovered all of their sabers were blunt.

Axes used in wars were generally lighter, thinner and made out of different steel than wood axes.
