So is the AK-107 Kalashnikov Concern's take on the AEK-971? Or are they the same?

How'd I do?

The AEK series and AK-107 are two completely different designs. They only share the same concept of a balanced recoil action.

Light, but the finish is weak.
If you stare too hard it comes off.
They're pretty neat though, and don't look bad with a worn finish either.

>>
>>31829780
Ah. There's some discussion of this at the end of the last thread.

Good antipersonnel bullets have been designed that are quite suited for both the 7.62x39mm cartridge and the AK platform, but are not currently readily available. There is lots of (spendy) ammo with hunting type softnose bullets:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZD3kIeGaUs

Note that the bullet went through a 16" block end to end then entered a gallon milk jug. Penetration may be on the high end of optimum here.

US commercial sporting ammo is comparable:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEo6avZd9ys

The Russian "hollowpoint" ammunition usually doesn't expand, neither does the Russian "softpoint" ammo. It's not very consistent, but this level of performance is normal and anything better than this is a bonus:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6RVuISLJ3o

You can't really blame the importers. The factories change bullet designs and change tooling constantly. The importers constantly change the names and you never know what you're going to get until you open the box.

Russian ammo is also, these days, mostly loaded in non-lacquered, non-copper-washed cases that aren't sealed at primer or case neck, which makes the ammunition vulnerable to both moisture and corrosion.

So there's brass-case commercial hunting ammo, if your AK feeds it, if the bare lead at the tip of the bullet doesn't hang up on the way into the chamber--not every AK will run reliably with ammo like this, and, to be fair, the AK was never designed for it either.

Brass case isn't cheap, even before you get into the exotic stuff:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP_R9obc_Ds (solid copper hollowpoint, seems to be intended for hunting whitetail deer)

So, to answer your question more directly, IF your gun will feed and function with ammo using ammo with softpoint bullets, the least expensive good performers are probably going to be brass-cased ammo with softnose hunting bullets, from Prvi Partizan or Seller & Beillot.

Is the 7.62x54r vepr just a meme that will beat itself to death and i should get it in an actual ak caliber or is it good to go?

Just curious how much you had into it. I've been itching for some sort semi auto machine gun for fun and the Madsen is near the top of my list because it's mechanically interesting while also being extremely historically significant.

If I could afford a ~$9000 semi auto PKM I'd be all over that but that's way too much.

>>
>>31830644
Never. The gun market can only go up. That could be good or bad, depending on how you look at it. On one hand, you can only buy so much gun. On the other hand, everything that you do buy will be more valuable later.
>>
>>31829764
im with this guy.

HONESTLY after trump wins.

A lot of guns are gonna go DOWN in price.

Because the price gauging obama lovers who claim to be "republicans" cant make up no stupid bullshit about how their gun is worth so much money. ESPECIALLY for AK! the fucking entire premise of this platform is that it is CHEAP EASY to make and RELIABLE!

It is through sheer fucking price gauging assholes that these guns are worth more than they should be. Becuase i know there is just some retards out there who had to buy fcking 20 of X gun due to 'Obamas gonna take ER GUNS!"

Thinking about getting a Zastava M90NP instead of a Mini-14. Have the issues with canted sights and gas selector been fixed or just have to hope i get a good one and not have to send it back? Im wanting to put either the texas dogleg rail on it for an adjustable peep sight or the Tech sight dust cover.
>>
>>31830796
Hate to say this in an /akg/ but just get a fucking AR.
M90NP's are going for almost $700 now and are nowhere worth that, especially with all the extra shit you want to do to it.
>>
>>31830842
Yeah its a toss up on the ar because id like to plink with some wolf and such. Plus its that rarity to it that gets me
>>
>>31830870
It's a neat concept, but I think somewhat poorly executed.
>If they'd had used a steel magwell, it would have sold like hotcakes.
You do know you can shoot Wolf in an AR, right?
It's not like people don't shoot steelcase in their ARs, sometimes exclusively, with no problems.

But if you want to add one to your collection because it's neat and different, then by all means, go for it.

I had a 106f and loved that fucker like nobodys business but had to get rid of it for the wifes meds bills. I miss it the only exspensive thing about it was the mags. Beware though the very early 106's had bad feeding issues because of not having big enough ramps in the chamber for the long 5.56 but as far as i know the cr versions are the only ones with gas issues. The pic is a 106 with the texas dog leg very ak-12 looking if you ask me lol

Hell yes.

Some of the early ones from like 2006/2007 had feeding problems but that's been fixed for a good while now, just check the serial prefix before you buy.

Also Arsenal has said they discontinued the SLR106 series, yet I keep seeing new ones popping up.

Mags can be expensive but it's not as bad is it used to be when you consider the price of AK74 mags has sky rocketed.

IIRC the magwell on the M90NP like pictured is welded on or some shit. You can't easily remove it.

Interesting. What's the point of it?

I must admit I like the look of it, but it looks like it would be more difficult to load a mag in, since normally you're meant to 'rock' it in. How can you do that if the magazine well is so deep?

In a sense, some people talk about the Ak-106 in reference to a .223 AK-107, but I don't think there's any proof of such a model actually existing. There's just some drawing from a book or something that also lists the AKMSU as an actual AK model. However a .223 AK-107 does actually exist in the Russian competitive shooting market, I think the name is MK-107, and is a .223 chambering of the 107 action, just looking different because it's very hispeedlodrag for 3gun.

I import them into the VLC app and view them as a network stream. Makes me have to switch apps but it werks alright. When I open a webm it opens a new tab, and ever since I downloaded the VLC app an option pops up in that tab to open in VLC. It switches the apps automatically and downloads the webm. But no, webms don't work on Safari in iOS 9, I haven't updated to 10 because it looks terrible.

Do Romanians have smaller sling swivels? I've asked here twie and on akfiles but apparently nobody knows anything.

Google has been of zero help and as far as I can tell there's zero vendors online with a romanian sling swivel in stock to buy.

I've thought about using a dremel to remove some wood to make the slot larger to fit a standard sling swivel, but the new hole for the screw would be pretty close to original one which I'm worried will cause structural integrity problems if the wood cracked or chipped off taking a 1/4 of the screws threading off.

Since it's going to be holding up a 13-15 pound RPK I'm putting that plan on hold in hopes that maybe somebody can give me a concrete answer.

fill in the old hole with epoxy or wood putty before you redrill it

Better fix would be to drill the old hole larger, drive in a hardwood dowel with some wood glue, and drill the new hole in the correct location once it dries.

Ok, so after digging out a stock set with a swivel it turns out it's probably the same size as the one you got from Kvar.
But, I think what will fit is an SKS swivel, as long as it's this kind and not the "cheap" flat type. (You'll know what I mean when you search)
This particular one is chinese, but I'd bet it'll be the right size and look correct.
Most places don't mention dimentions, so look for a swivel with the mounting holes closer to the center nearer to the actual sling swivel, if that makes sense.

Hm. Well, I guess that's pretty solid reasoning from his perspective. Still, you've already got a unique rifle that you're familiar with, and that you know is reliable.

If he's going to trade you one of his two rifles, he's going to give you the one with more issues.

Not saying it's a bad deal, but I'd be hesitant to trade away a really cool rifle.

It the fuck is a 1970s Gwinn Firearms/Quality Parts Corporation "Bushmaster Assault Rifle." There were many production variants and fewer than 3000 total in all variants were made between 1972 and 1988. The one in your picture has the very early Stoner 63 type rear sight base but later guns got a rear sight base looking more like the one on the Galil.

It's a gas piston driven, AK-ish design that uses AR15/M16 mags. Some had folding stocks, some didn't. Some had wood furniture and some had black plastic. All had M16A1 plastic grips and A1 type flash suppressors.

There were top charging handles and side charging handles, solid stocks and sidefolders, 2-3 types of gas block, 2-3 types of rear sight mount. They were made in small batches. All or almost all have 1:12 barrels for M193 only.

I am told the design is actually pretty solid and there is some collector interest.

recommendation was commercial brass-case hunting ammo with softnose bullets, IF your gun feeds them without the soft bullet noses catching on the feed ramp

least expensive at acceptable quality are probably gonna be either Prvi Partizan or Seller & Beillot brass case 124gr jacketed softpoints

When I see reviews saying that the gun is full of cast parts that aren't properly heat treated, and as a result the gun beats itself to death and becomes completely nonfunctional at 5000 rounds or less, I tend to believe that Century is once again living up to their reputation.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/04/26/akou-completes-5000-round-test-on-century-ras-47-rifle-is-not-fine/

Imported by Century? mite b good. Built by Century? Run away. You wouldn't think it would be possible to fuck up a design as simple as the AK but they managed it.

Get a WASR for $100 less and spend the $100 on ammo and mags. You will come out far ahead.

What I meant by "unless you REALLY like AKs, I wouldn't get an AK" is that AK market is pretty shit and if you're simply looking for a rifle, buying an AK isn't the most financially logical idea. For the price of an low tier AK now, you can get an decent AR, doll it up, and get ammo on the side.
>>
>>31840098
It is sort of unfortunate.

American Rifleman, whose writers I tend to find credible, claimed they tested an RAS47 and even the least accurate type of ammo they tried in it was still shooting under 2 MOA on average, with five-shot groups, and the best type was under 1.25 MOA. There are AR15s off the rack that won't shoot this well. The barrels are decent and the extra rigidity of the 1.5mm receivers seems to help.

But the metallurgy is FUBAR from one end to the other. Bolts mushroom, bolt carriers peen and bend and raise burrs on the too-soft bolt rails. Melonite style coatings give high surface hardness but this is NOT a substitute for doing the heat treatment right in the first place, not in a firearm.
>>

Yeah, that would be my next endeavor is to build an AR, I will lurk more and make wiser purchases.

falfiles does a receiver group every so often. unfortunately this quarter's buy ended already but it was an imbel gear forged receiver for $475 each plus $25 shipping. minimum for the buy was 100 receivers combined and there was 109 purchased this quarter.
>>
What FAL kits are out there these days?

I have mixed feelings about the FAL. It doesn't call out to me the way the AK or the Garand does. And so many FALs have loose rattly rear sights that wiggle a quarter inch side to side under finger pressure that I wonder whether there was some kind of design problem.

I wouldn't say no to one if I found a well made one at the right price, but I thought FAL parts kits dried up years ago.

I think the Cetme Modelo L (the roller-locked 5.56mm rifle, that is) is a neat and fascinating design but there's a severe lack of receivers to build the parts kits on, BATF approved fire control parts, etc.

8HP is all over the place if you know what to look for, I got 1200 rounds for something like .22/rnd
>>
>>31841502
The problem with trying to find 8m3 or 8h3 is that the bullet type is not marked on the packaging and just because XYZ company used those bullets one time for brand ABC ammo, that doesn't mean they always will. I've seen youtube ammo test videos that showed ammo with GREAT expansion (assumed to be 8m3), and then other ammo from the same lot just blasting through the gel block with zero expansion that apparently had a different projectile in it.
>>
>>31841533
You must be referring to the fairly recent Tula lots that apparently had 8m3 projectiles. Yeah best of luck with that crapshoot.

The original 8m3 boxes are well understood afiak. Blue and white "effect" uly, sapsan and so on. 8HP was a precursor to 8m3 and quite good as well.
>>
>>31841561
There was apparently some Bear (can't recall if it was Silver or Brown) that had 8m3 projectiles as well, not sure if it was very recent though.
And as you said, it's pretty much a crap shoot.

Found a 545 saiga at a gun show just now for $800. The handguard isn't converted though, is it a good deal /akg/?
>>
>>31841701
it's a bit high, but you are unlikely to find one cheaper since the import ban on them, so I'd say if you want one, and can afford it, get it. they're not going to get any cheaper unless a future pres cancels the import ban, and I just don't see that happening.
>>
>>31841716
Do you know if it would cost a shit load to convert it? And are they able to take standard polymer mags without conversion?
>>

>Do you know if it would cost a shit load to convert it?
$200-ish. maybe more maybe less. that's a gunsmith cost. less if you do it yourself, but you'd need some specific tools.
also that price is just for the front end conversion (gas block, hand guard retainer, front sight block)...by your post I was assuming the back end had been done (pistol grip, trigger moved forward to the mag release, standard buttstock)

>And are they able to take standard polymer mags without conversion?
yes.
