Ok so I have been looking into getting a new deer gun, well more like two. I know for sure I'm getting a howa in .243 (or a savage or remington doesn't really matter), but the problem I'm having is deciding if I want a 30 06 (which if I go with this I'm getting picture related) or a .308.

Can anyone help me on thiSaturday?

I know 30 06 is strictly a hunting caliber as there is little to no plinking ammo but it has the versatility of going from 110 grain to 220 grains
>>
No input?
>>
K is mostly for social rejects to dress up as army men and complain battle rifles are impossibly heavy to carry. Not so much hunting.

if just hunting .30-06

if for more then .308

thats just my preference but you can any kind of opinion on this subject
>>
>>31818141
Lol there has to be more that one hunter in this place

I'm honestly surprised the moist nugget hasn't been mentioned
>>
I don't have much experience with this but if it's a gun you only want to use when you kill a deer the 3006 has better balistics than the 308. But it's got a lot of punch and is not much fun to shoot on the range all day. Also it's more expensive than 308.

Honestly you'll be fine with the 308 unless you Wana take down and elk or something. And I've even heard of people do that.

Shoot both and see witch one your more comfortable with.
>>
If you are definitely getting a .243 then wtf are you doing trying to decide between 308 and 30-06?
>>
>>31818214
I don't have anywhere I might be able to shoot both. My Padre is a 300 win mag guy and my friends swear by the 7mm and the 270

Ifor it came down to it I'd be down to buy three rifle a 308 a 30 06 and a 243 but I don't want to have to spend the extra 5-700 if I don't have to... maybe I should stick to the .308 for now and if I want something heavier I'll get the 30 06. My biggest thing is I want that 30 06 because it aesthetically pleases me but what's the point of I don't take it out plus king because

A. It's a sporter barrel instead of a heavy barrel

B. It kicks like a fucking mule

C. I can't find decent plinking ammo that isn't going to cost $1. 10 per round or more
>>
>>31818308
I feel ya. Just get the 308 and be happy with it.

Or just get cheap savages and get all of them.
>>
>>31818270
I've only really hunted rabbits and upland game birds so I'm making the jump up. My gf got her hunting license and she says she's down to go hunting with me so the 243 is mostly for her, the thing I'm worried about the most is that I feel like at the last moment she's going to pull her shot and wound a fucking animal so I might need something to drop it just in case
>>
If you want to plink and hunt and you don't reload then .308 is your only choice for reasonably price ammo. .308 is sufficient enough for any deer. Unless you're shooting bears, elk or moose .308 is fine.
>>
>>31817916
I'd go .30-06 because it's more useful.

But I mostly collect milsurp for shits and giggles. My state doesn't allow rifle hunting other than muzzle loader.

>>31818202
Eh, it could work if you got one that was decent quality. Mine wouldn't work for shit. I can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn with it.
>inb4 bad shooter
I can hit bulls-eyes with my SMLE at 200, can't say the same of my mosin.

>>31818214
>.30-06 has better ballistics then .308
By what metric? They shoot about as far, hit about as hard, and the .308 is better because it shoots flatter.

>>31818308
.308 and .30-06 will both handle anything in North America and most things outside of it.

Hunting isn't hard, you see the deer you shoot the deer

If you really "need" something other than .308 you already know what round it is and wouldn't be asking /k/ for advice.
>>
>>31818351
3006 hits harder at better range. It's not by much but it's there. Trust me Id rather have 308 but the facts are there. Unless we get into custom loadings. Then idk what I'm talking about.
>>
>>31818387
I'm mostly doing it because I can't make up my fucking mind, that's what happens when you have too many options in what is available.
>>
>>31818406
Exactly, which is why I told you to get something in .308

If you want me to literally tell you what to get get a CZ 550 FS

I'm talking factory. Here's a comparison, almost exactly the same. Both are 150 gr FMJ from the same manufacturer. Which is probably the only reason the .30-06 is going farther, 150 is a bit on the light side. Normally it's 180 gr, where the difference between the two is more pronounced.

Soft point 3006 costs the same as 308 while giving sometimes 400 joules of extra energy. The 3006 is superior for hunting purposes.
>>
I've only ever taken deer with .30-06 and .30-30

.30-06 is great for deer and some elk if you have decent shot placement

depending on where you're at, I am selling my Remington 700 in .30-06 if that's of any interest to you
>>
.308 = 2700 ft/lbs of energy
.30-06 = 2900 ft/lbs of energy

Daily reminder that .30-06 is 20% more recoil for only approximately 5% more ballistics potential and is a long-action cartridge.

There is a reason the US military switched from .30-06 to 7.62x51mm.

Strayan, so our deer range from tiny Hog Deer up to Sambar that are basically horses with antlers.

.30-06 with 180gr monolithics will take the biggest hoofed critter if you can place it right.
To be sure a lot of guys go up to 9.3x63mm or less commonly the US brother .35Whelan to get 220gr into the meat, others go down to .270Win to reach out flatter.
Me, Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06
