AKs are great. AK pistols even more.
If I ever get an AK I'm definitely going to make it into a pistol. Only thing I'm wondering about is the ammo I should use.
Now I'm not talking about brands, I'm talking about ammo type.
7.62x39, 5.45x39 or 7.62x54R?
Now I know most of you are going to say that 5.45 AR pistols don't exist and that ALL of you are going to say x54R pistols DEFINITELY don't exist but what if one day I'll get a VEPR and manage to make one.
It'll give me a reason to work out, just to be able to withstand the recoil but maybe, just maybe, I could do it.
So how about it, /k/?
What would be the best cartridge for an AK pistol?
>>
>>31815492
do they even make 74 pistols?
>>
>>31815507
Certain places do, yes.
Only thing is they're pretty rare.
Some people argue 74s aren't worthy of being made into pistols. Others say they just can't, mechanically.

30 bloc for pistol length barrels

Anything else is retarded.

"Making" an AK into a pistol? There are already AK pistols available, and altering an AK to have a barrel less than 16" and/or an OAL of less than 26" means making an SBR, which is a legal process that some states don't allow, but does allow for a stock. You may need to look into your local laws (or just lurk more). Either way, a 5.45 pistol would make as much sense as a 5.56 pistol (read: It doesn't, except as an alternative to SBRs), and and a x54r pistol wouldn't have a barrel long enough to take advantage of the rounds ballistics, and would be more novelty than anything. 7.62x39 is very well suited to shorter pistol length barrels, being that it retains most of it's energy through those shorter barrels.

Legally, an SBR is something that has, like you said, a barrel less than 16" or an OAL of less than 26". And a pistol is essentially that too, only it doesn't have a stock.
As for retaining energy - it's a pistol. I won't be planning on using it to snipe targets 100s of metres away. It'll be either a truck gun or a HD weapon.
And here's where the whole 7.62x39 vs 5.45 vs 7.62x54R comes in. I really am leaning towards the x54R just because it has a much larger bullet and a HP x54R would be a better bet than a HP x39 or a HP 5.45,

30 bloc, or the .30 caliber cartridge used by Communist-bloc countries.

7.62x39 if you're using less than 16 inches.

I've never heard of any ammo called the .30 bloc.
If it does exist I'm pretty sure it won't be on sale anywhere in the US.
Do you mean 7.62x39 or 7.62x54R? They're both used by the eastern bloc. Both .30 cal.

>>31815824
Fucking lol.
>>
>>31815835
I mean the .30 caliber cartridge that's from this century, which is also the one that I told you to use.

AK pistols are stupid though, I've had the displeasure of using a few and still fail to understand the point of their existence.
>>
>>31815742

Yes, but if it starts out as a rifle, it's not legal to turn it into a pistol.

i don't think we're dealing with a pro here, anon

it can be- but the receiver would have to be destroyed to ATF specs and remade as a new virgin receiver.

So turn a rifle into a parts kit, throw away the barrel, get a new rear trunnion, and build a new receiver?

Where do you find the motivation to think this is a worthwhile endeavor?

Don't "make" any AK into a pistol. Buy either an M92 PAP if you love Krink-style AK's or buy a full size Draco (with 11.5." barrel) if you're poor or MUST have a chrome lined barrel.

7.62 and 5.45 should only be used for SBR as they hardly suffer any FPS loss. 5.56 on the other hand have a dramatic drop in FPS, resulting inan absolutely loss of the main advantage of using 5.56. Fragmentation. You get no fragmentation out of any SBR in 5.56/.223. This is why the M85 PAP isn't a good choice for SBR. As an AK that shoots 5.56, you lose a whole lot of FPS and energy.

The main difference between the M92 PAP & Draco are build quality and barrels. The PAP is Serbian made, extremely over built and has nice & tight tolerances. Not your typical AK. However, because it is a Yugo, you can't use standard AKM parts. Just Hugo stuff which is usually better quality anyways.

Draco's are Romanian made, don't have as good of a finish but have a really nice chromed barrel. They also have your typical "AK rattle" when you shake them. They also use standard AKM parts and are $50-$100 cheaper.

I own both and love my PAP. It just "feels" better and is a lot more fun to shoot.

Same place as the guy who found the motivation to make his mosin shoot 500 S&W effectively.
I realize it'll be more intensive than the work he did with his mosin, but hell, if I come out with a x54R AK pistol, it'll be worth it.

Literally 7.62x54R boi.

Get dem ammo cans

Pic not me, some cheeky fuck from my Facebook who just bought that today for 700 bucks

Forgive me if I don't make any sense I've had three Moscow Mules with double shots of Sobieski each.

Also, stay away from the Mini & Micro Draco. These were made solely to clean out spare parts bins.Pic related is a full sized Romy Draco.

Some guy decided to make the shortest AK pistol ever made. And god dammit he did it.
Sadly he had to put that fugly ass grip on it.
I've got a few more pics of it, gonna be uploading them now.
