i usually just use .308. im not gonna lie though i use it because when i bought my first rifle thats what the guy at the gun store recommended

Yes, I have.

Yes, they do, and the deer end up as dead as they do when shot with an arrow.

.300 win mag, literally best caliber for hunting
>>
>>31794869
are you trying to imply arrows dont effectively kill deer?
>>
>>31794621
I have a 7mm rem mag. depending on conditions I can get up to 1700, so I figure based on my current location that I'm getting 1450 reliably on my ballistics with hornady superformance. good enough to put the punch on a deer, with a new stock, it'll probable be more accurate, and since I added a better recoil lug and recoil pad, it's not so bad to shoot.

literally anything between .223 and .30-06 with the right projectile is ideal. even .22lr can easily kill deer if you hit them in the head.
>>
>>31794621
.308 win. And it's two popular wildcats .243 and .270

Anything bigger and you're over compensating, anything smaller and you're risking not having enough horsepower.

Plus surplus practice ammo for .308 is cheap and reloading supplies for all of them are readily available.

I use 7mm Rem Mag because I was given a Remington 700 chambered for it. Honestly anything above .243 will kill a deer just fine if you're talking about regular whitetail hunting with most shots falling under 200 yards.
>>
I use .25-06 for the most part, especially over grass lands where 400-500 yd clear shots are realistic. The 90-110gr bullets that fragment well also deflect easily, making my preferred neck and base of skull shots unacceptably difficult in brush and even taller grass.

In areas with tall grass or light brush, I use 300WinMag, simply because it is relatively cheap and easy to find loaded. Using a .308 bullet makes reloading more economical, as does the ability to use a LR primer over a LRM.

I like .308 Win because it works well at all ranges you should shoot at, comes in more platforms than religion, and you can afford to shoot the damn thing until it's second nature. Good on the plains, on the coast, in the mountains, in the woods.

Second choices would be .270 Win or .35 Rem

.22-250

>>
>>31795342

Y'know, knew a guy who was a real fan of 22-250 for deer, a real beanfielder of a shooter.

Always felt like he'd be undergunned in the corn belt, though.
>>
>>31794621
what ever is cheep and works for the distance you are shooting over and the critters you are trying to dispatch

in places with dense bush 7.62x39 is fine for deer and pig
and for open land .308 Remington is fine but I do like .275 rigby and 6.5x55 as a luxury
>>
>.270
Ballistics are pretty good for the typical short distances you'll be firing from (i.e. across a clearing or on an adjacent slope, depending on your terrain). Recoil isn't bad at all and the rounds are lighter than other common deer cartridges (ounces become pounds, and it doesn't take much to go over the hump from comfy to uncomfy hiking). It's cheaper than .30-06 or .308. Unless you're in open country or there are caliber restrictions preventing it (or if you have to use a shotgun for whatever reason), there's no real reason not to spring for the .270. Maybe if you live in Alaska and need something with more kick, I guess.
>>
>>31795375
beanfielder?
>>
The caliber is not important as long as you use a legal caliber and a zeroed rifle. The vehicle IS important.
>4x4 truck or GTFO of unpaved roads
>>
>>31794621
What species of deer are we talking about? Little tiny roe deer, big mulies, caribou? .30-06 is a good do it all type of cartridge, .308 too. .243 is real good for everything up to about whitetail size at reasonable distances. .30-30 is popular where I'm at because its all whitetails and dense woods here. If I lived in the corn fields or somewhere else where long shots were likely, I'd probably want something with some more go than the ought six. Maybe a .300 Win Mag or 7mm mag. Theres no one best cartridge, OP.

>>
>>31794843
this, anything more than 30-06 is overkill
>>
>>31795639
Gotta get them .50 BMG rounds for those deer at 3000 ft away :^)
>>
>>31795471

.243 on anything up yo whitetail

I'd take .243, especially with a premium bullet, on mule deer as well. My grandather used it to take an Elk every year, but I suspect that was more a limitation of not wanting to by a bigger caliber.
>>
>>31795031
Would 260 Rem be better? It's ballistics are slightly better because of higher pressures, and the ammo is probably more available in the US.
>>
30-06 or .308
ballistics are very similar on the two rounds so go with whatever you enjoy more.

The minimum size animal you would want to use a 30-06 on is a large coyote, while the largest animal to use it on would be a bear. They just cover a wide range of animals so IMO 30-06/308 is the best hunting round.

This. People that are either terrible shots or don't actually hunt are recommending all kinds of needlessly punishing and heavier shit like 300 win mags when the 6.5 Swedish beats nearly all of the standard fudd calibers in terms of ballistics while still having more than enough power to hunt medium game.

I've gotten 10 bucks 9 of them with a my .270 it's just the one I have always preferred. And 1 with a 22lr because I was in Mexico. Shot placement is the key.
>>
>>31797705
Forgot to mention these were all white tail.
>>
>>31797436

If you bounce a .22LR through a deer's upper shoulder/rear shoulder (where you aim with a bow) you will have a significantly shittier wound vector than if you used an arrow with a mean broadhead from a 45 lb+ bow.

t. seen both of them done.
>>
>>31797643

.35 Rem is not too much for deer in any world where 30-30 and .32 Win are acceptable. Like any other round, you cater projectile type to the game.
>>
30-06, 30-30, and .270.

There you go op.

If someones is hunting deer, they're probably using one of those calibers.
>>
>>31797765

This is such bullshit. I've been hunting for 20 years and seen .243 Win, .308 Win, 30-30, .270 Win, 30-06, 7mm-08, 7mm Mag, .223 Rem, .300 Win Mag, and a few others equally. Equally.

And I've hunted west to Arizona, north to Virginia, south down to Florida, east to Sout Carolina.
>>
>>31794681
>as effective as an arrow.
Clearly never seen what an expandable broadhead does to an animal.
>>
>>31794621
.30-06
Kills the fuck out of them and can be found literally everywhere for purchase.
>>
>>31797868
This OP

There are a lot of durr raffle calibers. Do your research and just go with what works for you.
>>

>>
>>31797868
Don't know what the fuck you're so twisted up about, I'm not saying you're wrong about them all being equally used, but he's objectively right. If you asked most people about which one they think is the most common deer hunting caliber, I'd bet 30-06 and 30-30 would be brought up more than the others.

Not necessarily because of performance or anything, they're just extremely common rifle calibers.

I'd almost go as far as to say that almost anyone who hunts with a rifle at least owns a 30-06 or 30-30.
>>
.308, .30-06, .270, .243, .30-30, etc. etc. are all viable deer hunting cartridges, and any of them will do the job so long as you are knowledgable about your weapon and bullet drop, etc.

Personally I have hunted with and made kills with .303 Brit, 7.62x39, 7.62x54, and 12 gauge using slugs.
This year I'm going to be using a Rem700 chambered in 7mm Rem Mag because it's the first scoped rifle I've ever had and been able to hunt with, and because muh STOPPIN POWAH.

Honestly though, just about any modern centerfire rifle cartridge would probably be adequate for deer.
>>
>>31794621

.308

it's probably the best general purpose cartridge in the civilian world when ballistics, performance, and cost are taken into account
>>
>>31795226
if you're out there with .22lr trying to aim for the head, you need to turn that gun on yourself.
