How big of an explosive warhead would you need to kill a tank crew by concussive force, without having to pen the hull?

Only /k/ related picture on my phone.

A 16 inch gun like this
>>
>>31794592
How big is the explosive warhead in one of those?
>>
>>31794323
152 mm HE is enough on a close miss to flip a tank over

I guess that doesn't guarantee you will kill the crew, however.
>>
>>31794323
High caliber artillery guns.

152 & 155mm HE rounds should do the trick.
>>
>>31794323

500 pound bombs can do it easily on a direct hit.

2000 pounders don't even have to get particularly close.

155mm artillery shells can get mobility and sensory kills easily, not sure they will get the crew even if the hatches are open, shockwaves are fickle things.

Humans can endure a LOT of overpressure.
>>
>>31794918
Are you sure?
I'm talking like shoot an Abrams or Leo2 with a HE shell and the concussive force alone killing the occupants.
>>
>>31794898
Pretty big
>>
>>31794933
True, but I'm sure no matter how much hearing protection, they'll be deaf for life. Probably be passed out for a good while as well. If they hear anything, it'll probably be EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>31794898
on a scale of 1 to ∞, 16
>>
>>31794918
Nope. during lebanon war of 2006 one merk got hit by an IED (unexploded 155mm shell, ironically from IDF artillery barrage).

It sent the tank flying and lutwrally kill its subsystem, but the crew survived and the tank is brought back to service
>>
>>31794933
>Humans can endure a LOT of overpressure.
this and yet a little whiplash will kill you

fairly small bombs and autogun rounds (like your precious LE FLYING GUN A-10's Gau-8) ***CAN*** kill a dude in a tank, but it's not guaranteed. That the crew are, y'know, in a fucking tank, is why tank-killing evolved to kill THE TANK and not the crew. A tank with no working treads is useless. Doesn't matter that the three guys in it can still do stuff, the tank itself is useless.

Really, warfare itself has NEVER been about just killing people. I don't know why americans have such a hard time understanding that, but war strategies have always been about disabling the capabilities of people rather than the people themselves. It doesn't matter that a tower is around to sling arrows if they are out of arrows. It doesn't matter if a country has high-end planes and ace pilots if they have no airfields. etc etc.

Considering the US did test to simulate soviet styled artillery attacks after the cold war to confirm if the soviets idea of artillery doing shit ton of damage to armored vehicles was true.

They found out that 155mm rounds hitting close to tanks reguarly destroyed tracks etc (20 meters away). Airburst destroyed optics and the gun while direct hits destroyed the tanks. turning it to scrap metal.

I was mainly thinking of a 155mm round being fired from a gun and directly impacting the tank.

Not a IED using 155mm HE rounds since that is different.
>>
>>31795546
Was about to post this, but I see there are still some people that know arty on /k/
good shit senpai
>>
Won't kill the crew on modern tanks within reason

Will make the tank stop working quickly
>>
>>31795546
I'm not asking about damage, I'm talking about a pure concussive force killing the crew.
>>
>>31795534
>I don't know why americans have such a hard time understanding that,
What is the 5.56x45 for $500, Alex.
>>
>>31795668
Damage includes killing the crew. Also includes pure concussive force but its rather a combination of different things such as structural failure in the armor and fragmentation and spall.
>>
>>31795534
>Really, warfare itself has NEVER been about just killing people.

Because people fix things that get broken you tard.

Thanks.

So if arty is so powerful and can damage modern MBTs even without direct hits, why don't we have modern tank hunters mixed in with MBTs (outside of ATGMs)?
>>
>>31796152
Because they are easy as fuck to kill compared to a tank and artillery guns dont have that great rate of fire. They are not that great in direct fire compared to a normal 120mm gun on tanks. There is also no big need for it anyway currently.
>>
>>31795534
What is HESH?

>There is also no big need for it anyway currently.
>implying need has anything to do with what the US spends billions developing

>>31795510
Subtle.
>>
>>31796174
But wouldn't it have superior range over a conventional MBT, meaning MBTs on the offensive against your position would have to risk a considerable amount before being able to engage?
>>
>>31794909
Bull shit
>>
>>31796362
Range is limited by how far you can see your enemy and hit him.

Most modern tanks have no problems hitting targets 3-4 kilometers away. If a super tank destroyer can engage a MBT 4 kilometers away since it got a line of sight then the same thing applies for the MBT.

Who spots the other first and fires first is the most important thing in tank combat. The defender always have the advantage over the attacker unless there is a gap in technology or skill, you can also have a combination of those two.

Wow, with the AK74 muzzle brake it would really, really suck to have the guy in the back fire that close to you.

Front dude is about to be deaf as fuck and get a burnt face to boot.
>>
>>31796837
Better than catching a room full of fire.
>>
>>31794323
>having a muzzle so close to your ear

That's my personal nightmare.
