How common is hunting with semi autos? Other than hogs it doesn't seem to be too common?
>>
>>31785356
Bolt action is much more common but using semi autos isn't unheard of, especially on smaller game
>>
>>31785356
For me it would feel too much "overkill" to go hunt with a semi-auto, but maybe that's just me
>>
>>31785356
I know a ton of people locally that get their deer with semi autos. The problem is that they weigh and cost more and that accuracy can be an issue for longer shots.

TL;DR bolt actions are cheaper, lighter, and far more common in hunting calibers.

Semi auto shotguns are pretty common, rifles not so much

Still there are plenty of semi auto rifles that are intended for hunting like current production BARs and H&K SL-7 and SLB-2000 to name a few.
>>
>>31785356
Just about every hunter I know carries (or if in a commie state wants to) a semi pistol.

As for hunting it's extremely common. Especially if your state laws are good for semi auto shotguns for deer.

AR15s are dumb common for stuff like pierre dogs and deer.

Pretty common. My grandfather was hunting with a Remington Model 4 before I was born.
>>
>>31785464
auto correct
>>
>>31785356

Pretty common desu.

One of my buddies hunts moose and bear with an M1A, another uses an older Remington (7400 maybe?) in .35 Whelen.
I pop the odd coyote wiith a VZ58.
>>
>>31785356
Depends on state law, like here in IL if you want to hunt deer, you've got to use a shotgun with slugs or a bow. Plus .223 is too small for deer
>>
>>31785356

I don't hunt myself, but for me it would stand to reason to use a Semi Auto, just in case the first shot doesn't do the trick
>>
>>31785356
I know of tons of people who hunt coyotes and bigger varmints with ARs, they're also becoming popular for deer and hogs in bigger calibers like 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, and .300 Blackout. Literally everyone who has squirrel hunted ever has done it with a 10/22, Marlin 60, or Remington 597 at some point. Semi shotguns are popular for all birds except turkey.

>overkill
>>
>>31785356
It largely depends on the game and area you're in.

I know guys that will take their SKS out and kill a deer with it, but it's not common.

In Indiana, a lot of people use the typical bolt action, shot guns, and muzzle loaders. These days there is an increase in lever action rifles, now that you can hunt deer with pistol caliber cartrages.

If you're shooting small game like rabbit or squirrel, a semi auto 22 is very common.
>>
>>31785487
5.56 with 55+ grain bullets is absolutely adequate for East Coast whitetail. It performs about as well as .243 or .30-30 do out to 200 yards. I wouldn't recommend trying to pop a Mulie 350 yards across a corn field with one, but an 18+ inch AR is perfectly fine for hunting innawoods in somewhere like Tennessee or West Virginia.
>>
>>31785514
There are semi-auto .308, but your point stands

I'm sure he meant that it was too easy to get follow-up shots. Surely nobody on this board would equate semi-auto with scary armor-piercing assault boolits

Why not .458 Win. Mag. or something genuine, not a fucking meme round?
>>
>>31785736
Your roommate doesn't know what humane means
>>
>>31785736
Your roommate needs to pull his head out of his ass and realize that just because you have 30 rounds doesn't mean you have to use them all. The idea is one shot one kill but if you fuck up you have plenty of ammo to put it down NOW instead of it escaping and running for several hours in agony before dying.
>>
>>31785356

Very common around me though a lot of people still use the whole "hur dun use semi auto because you don't need 30 rounds to hunt , you bad shot just get a bolt action like all of us. Semi auto is for pussies , muh dick bolt action".

Personally I have a 10 round mag I use to hunt with because it's easier to maneuver than one with a 30 round mag.

It almost always takes one shot to drop them. Maybe a second a few minutes later to end their suffering. But nothing a bolt couldn't do.

It's are a different story. I shoot them as many times as I can as fast as I can.

Taken and dropped either 6.8.

And I have honestly no idea what you are talking about with the green text

Like I said. I prefer my AR over my bolt. I'd take an AR-10 but too expensive.

Have fun when a herd of pigs walk out with a bolt.

>>
>>31785356
I use semi-autos for pest extermination, when you've got to knock over a couple of hundred pigs, goats, deer or kangaroos in a couple of days. You just can't do it with anything else.
Course, that does get lots of passive-aggressive hate from everyone from the amateur hunters who can't go out and bag themselves something fluffy- to the greenie-lefty lunatics that think its cruel and inhumane (oh and 90% of city people think I'm a psycho for owning evil black guns).
Simple fact is neither of those groups do very much for conservation anyway aside from sitting around bitching. Can't say I do any 'hunting for fun' so to speak, still own a couple of big old bolt actions for long range, precision shooting and some smaller ones for rabbits and foxes, but the majority of what I use to kill things is either .223 or 308.

Because seeing as hunting is a sport it has rules. It's supposed to have a degree of challenge to it.
In PA there are rules for number of people in hunting parties and regulations on using cell phones and radio to coordinate the hunt.

Kills Moose Dead.
>>
Very common.
I hunt whitetail in MN with three other regular guys. One uses a BAR, one uses an AR, and one uses his SKS. Me I have a Winchester 94 for hunting. All of us regularly fill our tags without issue. Just because it's semi auto doesn't mean you mag dump when you see an animal. In fact they almost always bag them with one shot. They prefer semi automatics because the rounds are lighter, the weapons are versatile and interest them, and when they do fuck up they can make a follow-up shot without re-adjusting. Of course, the area we hunt is thick as fuck Itasca country brush, and if our shots had to be longer they might have an issue
>>
>>31785707
Indiana here. Took 2 deer with 300 black last year.
>>
Because when you hunt you are supposed to take game with 1 shot, not mag dump toward a deer.
>>
Literally every person I've ever personally seen coyote hunt has done so with an AR or the likes.

Shit, I've hunted coyotes with a friend's Vepr. There use to be an old man that hunted them with a Garand around here.

Nice man.

I usually just do black powder and bow. I enjoy the challenge. No hate at all for semi auto hunters, just not my thing.

So do most of you only hunt during rifle? Or do you hunt bow as well to try and extend your time in the stand/blind?
