Probably not. I shoot suppressed so the easier cleaning afforded by a Mystic coating is worth it to me, but otherwise I don't feel any coating is worth the increased cost. My phosphate BCGs aren't any slicker than the Cryptic. But I feel like the Life Coat (nitride) Adams Arms BCG is a little easier to clean than phosphate, so maybe find one that's melonited/nitrided. It should be the same cost as a normal phosphate coating.

Slickness and improved feeling result from a nicely made receiver extension and a good spring more than anything else, don't skimp there. $20 savings isn't worth months of tooth-chattering sproing.

I did. When I was on a trap team, my coaches made me shoot right handed and put cardboard over my left lens during practice. I never totally got over it, but I can shoot equally well left or right handed now with rifles and shotguns. I'm still worse left handed with handguns, but that's a practice issue.

If it's bothering you, try taping up or covering your left lens on your shooting glasses when you go to the range. Keep practicing like that until it feels natural. You're training your brain to take in more stimuli from your right side rather than the left, and that can take a bit of work because you've probably been doing it like that your entire life.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with shooting an AR left handed. She'll deflectors are there for a reason.

I honestly wouldn't even recommend that. You'll be able to manipulate all the controls anyways shooting left handed. Ambi CHs are a little silly imo because you can still activate the handle by reaching over or doing an AK style underhand technique. When I shoot lefty, I use my index finger to work the safety. I'd say just try shooting that way for a bit, and if you find yourself really feeling like you'd benefit from more ambi parts, go ahead and get them.

Also, I do in fact have an AXTS short throw ambi safety since it came in my tac pack. It drive me nuts when I first got it because it was digging into my shooting hand, but once I got used to it, it's not so bad. I don't really notice much difference with a short throw vs standard though.

I agree some of the hardest work I do is vision related therapy. It's easy to teach someone to adapt to a weakened, hemiparetic, or injured arm, but visual deficits are very hard to adapt to or overcome. Give me a bad stroke with motor problems any day over someone with hemianopsia or neglect.

I've got two stripped lowers to be assembled later; at the moment I'm considering turning one into an SBR and the other into either a 16"/18" carbine or a plain jane A2 clone, but I'm not sure if I should try and get a 3rd lower when I can to turn it into a .300 BLK gun. Normal 55gr 5.56 through a good can on a 14.5" gun is SIGNIFICANTLY louder than 220gr .300blk through the same can on an 8.5" barrel.

My handloads (203gr Palmetto over 9.5gr 4227 for ~950fps) through my 16" barrel are damn near silent. I can clap louder than they are, but it's not a load that'll cycle most guns.

Is .300 BLK something you have to handload to really get the best performance out of? I don't have the space to set up a loading bench and probably won't for some time. If I did it, I'd probably just end up buying factory loads.

Currently, factory loads do 99%+ what handloads can do. The 110gr Barnes factory load is really pushing the pressure envelope, and due to subsonics having to, well, STAY SUBSONIC the 220gr SMK factory load hits about as hard as anything.

If you want to hunt, there's a large number of 110-125gr expanding tipped loads out there (barnes blacktip, hornady/nosler 110gr Vmax/Varma, Nosler 125gr Ballistic Tip,125gr SMK) for supers. The only expanding loads for subs are the ridiculously expensive things like LeHigh and clones at $3+ per round.

The big allure of handloading for the .300blk is the ability to use cast bullets. With M80 pulls just about dried up and current-production 150ish grain bullets a 20-25 cents each you'd be hard pressed to beat factory costs on reman. However, places like Palmetto Projectiles, Leatherhead, MBC, etc offer cast+coated or plain cast heavy subs (203-245gr), and of course if you cast your own you can also get hollowpoints that do expand at subsonic velocities (my NOE 245gr with hollowpointing pin reliably achieves 180% expansion down to around 650fps, which when loaded to 1050fps MV is like 600yds).

Almost all .300blk uppers require a regular carbine buffer. While an H or H2 will probably work for supers you'll short-stroke with subs.

Thanks, this is good info. I run an ST-T2 in my current carbine (sits between H and H2 weight), but my future guns will probably end up getting H buffers. Regardless, swapping the buffer out isn't exactly difficult, so a buffer + upper swap on one of the guns I put together sounds like it'll be a practical strategy should lowers become impossible to procure at a reasonable price in the future.
