Why dont all tanks have the engine at the front? You get a big piece of metal that helps cover the crew and a gigantic hatch on the back for a quick and easy way to get in and out.
I can see that visibility for the driver could be bad, but in todays world with cameras and screens that can be easily avoided.

Lets think about it for 1 minute.
You got armor in the front, the place where you will be shot most likely.
Now, if we put the engine there, we sacrifice armor (but still have the engine as "additional" armor).
Now you get shot, a regular tank it might bounce or not penetrate. Tank still works.
With the engine in front, you get hit, the chance of penetration is higher, your engine gets shredded, your tank cant move and is now inoperable.
Engine in front is a shit idea.
Another point is that thermal signature in front would reeeaaalllly suck if you try to attack dug in enemys.

And you can make a gigantic hatch in the front so the crew has a quick and easy way in and out

It's like a bulpup.
But a bulpup rifle doesnt have to shield you, so theres no reason to do it.
>>31775412
yea but its harder to repair engine .You either have to put hatch in front of the tank or make one side of engine unaccessible. Also the only parts that are tough enough to make difference are crankshaft or piston but hitting that is one in a million.

What stops you from making the front armor the same thickness as you would have otherwise? If you dont have the engine in the front, that's where the driver goes so it has to have some open space anyway.
>>31775412
First of all engine is not armor.
Second is if you place your engine like in Merkava you will have less frontal armor, since you must somehow reach the engine to maintain it, so your upper glacis becomes a hatch that physically cant be 999 m thick.
Third is that the closer the crew to frontal armor - the thickest one - the safer it is, since not all threats will be directly in the front.

Weight distribution or something like that.

W-wait, Ukraine have a carrier?

>First of all engine is not armor.
this... heat would chew through steel like butter.

Its a joge.
>>31775616
had
the Chinese one was Ukrainian (and before that Soviet)
that one in pic is fake, doesn't 500 planes capacity make it obvious?
Most the weight on a tank is already in the front. That's where you want most your armor.
Putting the engine in the back is good weight distribution.

With drones we might see it happen one day.
Engines make for terrible armor. The benefits are minimal.
>>31775412
Why do people who've never even read a single book about tank design think their ideas aren't terrible?

Why is Liaoning listed as CV 16? Isn't it their first carrier?
>>31775546
This.
There is a reason why most tanks have varying degrees of thickness of armor around the tank. If the engine was in the front and the front was heavily armored the tank would be top heavy. The tracks would struggle to push the tank forward.

Israel does it because they don't have to fight anybody with high-tech tanks or competent crews.
Pic related.
>>31775412
why don't all cars have there engines in the front you have a big piece of metal to protect the driver from other cars that way.
>>31777805
Here I am wishing there was a modern Corvair Monza with a tansverse LS in the back

Same class as the admiral. Was sold to China after sitting around in Ukraine following soviet collapse.

So it was classified as CV-16 by Russia? I thought only America used that numbering scheme.
>>31778043
>So it was classified as CV-16 by Russia?
No, it never has a tactical number in the Soviet Navy. If it was completed for Russia it would of been some thing like 115 in the early 90s and 066 now.
>I thought only America used that numbering scheme.
They do, more or less. Russian system is completely different, it designates the ships position in its division/brigade and fleet, and might change many times over the life of the ship.

youre a madman.
