I want to take this time to give props to DICE for their accuracy in weapon design for Battlefield One.

The "Gewehr M.95" has an audible ping when you chamber the last round and the en bloc clips falls out. This could have been easily missed and nobody would have known about it.

Goodbye.
>>
>>31773714
I'm still pissed the infantry and sniper variants of the Mauser do not have interchangeable ammo. Do they not realize it's the same damn rifle?
>>
>>31773734
it's for balancing reasons
>>
>>31773734
I'm more annoyed that it's WW1 and yet there's basically no reason for anybody to use an iron sighted bolt-action rifle. They should've done what they did in BF1942 and had a class that had a really good kit but used boltguns, or at least made them an alternative option.
>>
>>31773734
>>31773766
But you guys.

>>31773766
I just think about the game as if the war dragged on into the 20s or something.
Also Austrian character models are swag.
>>
>>31773784
This. You guys will be annoyed and disappointed no matter what any game developer does
>>
>>31773766
I feel you.
I actually struggle using a scope on the bolt guns. I like to make a point of using them iron sight only, it's good for close quarters and long distance
>>
>>31773766
They're extremely effective at medium to long ranges, most of them have a sweet spot that will cause a 1 hit kill on bodyshot as well.
>>
>>31773714
Personally I had no idea there were so many semi-autos/lmgs till this game came out. That and the french going hands off with their military and letting the US army replace them for the last 2 years of the war.

Actually give kudos to dice for showing this side of the war to the next generation.
>>
It's a shit game about WWI because it's filled with semi and full auto guns.

I won't buy it for this reason alone. What's next in the series? American civil war BF game where people carry gattling guns?

Fuck this game and fuck those Swedish faggots.
>>
>>31773866
You missed the part where pretty much all of the guns are correct for their time, they are just used out of doctrine (which is impossible to enforce in mp)
>>
>>31773890
I'm sure some autist will run a server that does boltguns only

>>
>>31774488

>>
>>31773866

God forbid a game is just fun. Fact is that while I'm frustrated as a history guy by the narrative being that the European war was this multiracial thing (which of course it largely wasn't) plus no French shit going on, it's still a lot of fun, and with my old games that I got rid of I paid literally a dollar out of pocket for it.

Also employee discount
>>
Still Pissed France is not in game
>>
>>31773890
>correct

I'm sure we also have prototype rail guns right now, but that doesn't mean that soldiers in our period are walking around with rail guns shooting at people.

The fact is, 99.9% of all guns used in WWI by infantrymen were bolt guns.

Just because there was some sort of automatic and semi automatic prototypes from that time being made, doesn't mean they were used.
>>
>>31773714
Yeah, they got that right, but none of the Enfields are in a firing position.
>>
>>31774556

I like it for this impressive arsenal and I'm having fun. That said, Operations are borked with how easy it is to shrek Attackers, the gas grenades need a duration nerf, and I think it's stupid how they're limiting specific sidearms to classes. I shouldn't -have- to play as a Medic to be able to use one of the most iconic pistols of the war and enjoy the process of ventilating my foes with 7.63x25 Mauser.
>>
>>31774810
Artificially limit the amount of ammo you have. Makes it less likely that you'll just sit in a corner sniping across the map or similar.
>>
>>31774894
I'm most pissed with how powerful the semi-automatic rifles are. Shit's fucking ridiculous.
>>
Been playing the BF2142 revive. Such a kick ass game, forgot how comfy it was.
>>
>>31774913
I vastly prefer a bolt-action w/ irons over a semi-auto, personally.

I also want to give props to DICE for actually making an enjoyable campaign, but maybe the sheer monumental awfulness that was 4's makes it seem better than it really is.
>>
so, is this game any different from past BF games, or is it just Battlefield with a WW1 skin?

I do to but when it comes to actual play, I was getting murdered like it was cool by semi-auto rifles. Then I picked up a semi-auto and now I only die to other semi-auto. That just screams that they need more balancing.
>>
>>31774962
I want to say you can feel and see how it plays differently rather well. While there are a lulzy amounts of semi and full-auto weapons in play, each kind of gun fills its own distinct niche and I'm not feeling like every single fucking gun is the same thing as I did in 3 and 4. The Behemoths are pretty neat too.
>>
>>31774687

Lol you're an absolute retard
>>
I think it's awesome that they added so many unknown guns and such, but the story really needed that trench feel which it didn't have

The codex with the story bits and explanations of random stuff is nice too and my inner /pol/ack can live with the fact that all the nigs die in the first mission
Like a few missions of sitting in a trench, eating gruel, getting trenchfoot amd then dying through artillery fire woulda been nice
>>
>>31774978
Well it did just come out, we'll see how it is in a couple of months and pray to all fuck that it doesn't take them as long to fix glaring issues as it did with 4.

First and foremost that needs fixing is Operations, I don't think I've seen a single match where Attackers won.

Armchair historians i have a question.
I've heard many conflicting things about Austria Hungary during WW1.

>They had a critical lack of Machines guns and Artillery at the start of the war and continued well towards the end of the war
>the troops were naive and not well trained
This i know to at least be partially true since 90% of the countries involved in WW1 hadn't fought a war in generations.

>>
>>31780398
>As in guys literally running around and shooting one shot antitank rifles
No, that's something you pick up on the map A-la old school fps multiplayer.
The AT rifle can only be used prone, or from cover, as in no shoulder fire.
>>
>>31774857
Origin isn't all that bad anymore, t.b.h. They have a pretty decent refund policy and occasionally give you free games (granted the free stuff is mostly shovelware but still). It's no GOG but it's not awful like UPlay.

More so you didn't have cookie cutter shit. For example, used to be that if you used the Bulldog you ran it with Heavy Barrel, Angled/Folding Grip, and then choice of optic (usually red dot or 1x optic of choice) and accessory (usually laser for accessory). Now pretty much everyone who used the Bulldog used that exact same setup. Dice didn't like it so they changed it by putting in the set variations.

>>31780311
>90% of countries involved in WWI hadn't fought a war in generations
>troops were naive and undertrained
Except that is complete bullshit. Wars of German Unification, Austria-Hungarian Empire taking land in the Balkans (arguably this directly led to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand), Britain had several wars in the preceding years, and so on.

The real issue was that everyone assumed that the wars would be quick and easy. Only vaguely recent war that was even slightly similar to the hell we would see in WWI was the US Civil War. Which as you can see, the majority of generals didn't think that is how WWI would turn out until it was too late.

yup. they're taking some serious liberties to make the game more generic fps friendly. The game needs to sell and bolt actions, bayonets, final destination would alienate the spray and pray demographic that consume a large majority of fps players.

So semi auto rifles are standard issue, bolt actions are sniper gunz only, and stationary crew served heavy machine guns are the new lmgs. so pretty much a soft ww2 game

dont even get me started on the historical liberties they took to butt pat the easily triggered.

Hours late, but people were running things like HBAR+stubby on the AEK under the assumption that it would make their gun better at range. It didn't, it was actually worse than stock or no barrel+stubby.

Variants are pretty much attachment presets that play to a weapon's strengths. For instance, use a trench variant for better hipfire, a factory variant for rapid fire due to better spread and recoil decrease values, or an optical variant for better aimed accuracy.

That doesn't make the system better, though, it makes it worse. If people want to bubba their gun up, they should be able to.

wut? Guess I have some googling to do. First I've heard of this. And are you sure it will be campaign and not just part of the operations game mode (which is pretty cool, though it needs some serious balancing).

>>31783303
Eh, like another anon said, I just want to bubba my rifle a bit. For example, I have better vertical recoil control. However my horizontal control is pretty shit. So I liked getting the compensator for BF4 cause that would help with my horizontal (side to side) recoil.

It's a sound business decision, I guess. The bulk of their audience wouldn't derive much enjoyment from a mission where you butcher thousands of men who can't fight back in tiny boats with a pittance of cover from air and sea assets.

I mean, the average player is less than 18, and that's being generous, I reckon. Wouldn't want to give the poor children nightmares.

They also talked to Indy Neidell. Doesn't mean that they got that shit right. They just talked to them at some point.

Developers have an idea at hand, and they don't like it when someone who knows better tells them it worked differently. Trust me, when Othais put together a whole video on how the Lewis and MG08/15 reload for the Verdun team and it doesn't get shit changed, you know it's because it was A. too much work and B. too different from what the designer wanted in the game.

In EA's case, it's "we can't have this be actually different from a spunkgargleweewee" so machine guns everywhere.

By the way, sorry Othais, but here's that video. Interdasting stuff.

I know there has been some great intelligent discussion in this thread but allow my post that is totally ignorant of it.
1. Sitting on a sand dune with the T-Gewehr wrecking early 20th century technicals and personnel is awesome
2. The whole fucking campaign is far better than any popular console FPS campaign in almost 10 years
3. There are real actual iron sight bolt guns that can be used effectively.
For console gaming that is something special, and having a campaign that isn't total linear, and you can do it any way you want, is a refreshing change to the shit that console gaming has been pushing out. My main complaint is Friends in High Places is too fantasy.
Would've been 10/10 if it was branded as alternate history WW1 but I have no issue with this installment.
I'd like to see plane commands that are more realistic but... With carb'd motors on planes I guess it makes sense you can't barrel roll and stall your way through a dogfight.
>>
>>31784463
>With carb'd motors on planes I guess it makes sense you can't barrel roll
Yes you can and they did. Planes are still made with carburetors. The engine won't stall if it keeps moving.
>>
>>31784463

>>
>>31785755

My biggest gripe with BF1 is how it thematically feels like a WW2 game, not a WW1 game.

It's difficult to explain, but the faster close combat gameplay combined with the vibrant aesthetic just doesn't make it feel like WW1.

In the singleplayer trailer, one of the Main characters says "If history only remembers 1 in 1000 of us, then the future will be filled with stories of who we were, and what we did". Tell me, does not sound more WW2 than WW1? The biggest sticking point for me is that the game seems to want to tell a tale of heroes and glory, but to be frank, that's not WW1 to me

To me, WW2 was a war of Heroes and Glory, where brave men gave their lives and suffered greatly to fight for a good cause. However WW1 was a war of Misery and Pain, which was pretty much fought for no reason.

The Tonal dissonance just gets me, it almost feels disrespectful to me. I don't know, it might just be me, but it's just unsettling.
