I got one with wood furniture in pretty great condition for 700. get rid of the steel mags, buy the aluminum ones from HKParts.net. I got 10 of them for $2 each.

Honestly, I fired my buddy's PTR91 and my C308 back to back a few times. And my C308 had a more consistent and better group, and had a significantly softer recoil. even he agreed.

Good for the price. Some in /BRG/ hate them, but they're good bang for the buck. It's a battle rifle. Recoil will be excessive for the round in question, and accuracy will be comparable to an AK; perhaps slightly better, but not by much. May have to be warrantied once or twice to get it reliable.

So what would you get if you were in my position? I just was a cheap high caliber battle rifle, only thing I ever fired was an m16 in BCT. I was thinking of getting an FN-FAL but those are 1200+. Maybe a shit-tier AR-15 and just settle for 5.56? My budget is around 700-950

I literally just got one today for 750 + 12 mags.
It's a solid budget battle rifle.
The important parts are all made by PTR after Century fucked up the CETME.
Seriously, buy that shit. Worst case scenario you sell it on armslist and make a profit.

After like 10 minutes at 500+ degrees F the furniture started to melt and come off.
The FTF and FTE were caused by bad mags. He talked about it in a forum post later. They got some shitty surplus steel mags from the 60's and the springs were shot.

Honestly, the only full-sized rifle cartridge gun I go to outside of my Milsurps is my Model 70, and I'm not in a hurry to get a CETME/G3/FAL/AR-10 either.

But that's just me. If you want a semi-auto battle rifle, then the C308 will be great for the price point. If you don't have an intermediate semi-auto rifle already, then now would be a good time to build an AR-15. For the money you have, you can build an excellent AR-15.

I'm just saying that while the PTR looks attractive for only $200 more, H&K made a lot of unnecessary changes to the CETME design, like replacing the simple flip sights with a confusing drum sight, later switched to easily breakable polymer furniture (CETME made polymer furniture is fine), and reversed the fire controls which make them confusing and harder to use.
