I'm a bit new at guns and a buddy and I are a bit puzzled by a weird phenomenon we noticed, figured I'd ask here for some insight.
I have a run of the mill piece of shit Mosin that I never take out because I don't care for getting kicked in the shoulder, I generally find it unpleasant. However my buddy picked the same rifle with a PU scope on it, and we were both surprised to find that with the exact same ammo (literally from the same box), his rifle kicked a lot less. In fact, I would be quite happy to shoot his Mosin for hours, whereas after 10-20 shots with mine I had my fill and my shoulder was sore.
Both the rifles are the same length, using seemingly the same stock, no shock absorber or anything, the only visible differences are the different bolt handle and the scope on his rifle.
Could it be the different posture for looking into the scope versus looking at the iron sights? What sorcery is this?
I have no experience with Mosins since I'm not a broke ass son of a bitch, but with any rifle, the added weight of a scope (1-2 pounds) greatly reduces felt recoil by fact of newtonian physics.
Heavier guns kick less.

Have you actually tried weighing them?

>Somehow video game gun mechanics became real life for anon
Did it also have +10 for damage and +15 for accuracy?
>>31750607
No we just showed up at the range one day and we shot them. Sounds possible that the weight did make a difference but it's surprising to me that 1-2 pounds did substantially change felt recoil, as the rich dude above is saying.

>kicked in the shoulder
stop being a skelton and also improve your stance
>>31750560
I imagine it's how you are holding it. You're positioned differently when trying to look through the scope rather than the irons.
>>31750897
what i mean by this is not improve your stance, improve your form. my theory is you are scared of your rifles recoil and it was temporarily removed by having a different gun in your hands, then it snowballed into your less recoil theory.
>>31750897
shut your mouth, your skeleton is the most important part of your body and it's what you need to be able to shoot guns
>>31750560
You might be getting a better "posture" with the different weapon.
Your friend's rifle might also be a piece of shit that's not putting the full force of the cartridge downrage.
I don't know the "correct" term for it, but some of the gasses might be getting wasted which would result in reduced "kick", but also notably lower muzzle velocity.
The skeleton is the strongest muscle in the body (with the brain coming in as a close second), so strong its almost completely rigid.

>>31750934
You're talking about a shot out bore I think. As in the rifling has gone to shit and it's quite possible some of the gasses are escaping around the sides of the bullet rather than being directed solely towards propelling said bullet.
Honestly I think it's a combination of >>31750576 and >>31750914
As in, the extra weight helps a bit and the rest is mostly a better stance. In short, git gud fag.

It's called proper posture and hold. I'm so tired of fags buying mosins or savages or 700s and bitching it kicks too much. I have two mosins, one with a polymer stock and one with the wooden furniture, both are extremely comfortable. The Mosin has a beautiful, long and smooth push to it. I would argue that my Remington 770 feels harder than a Mosin. I'm 5'9" and around 165 pounds, I'm not a huge dude.
It's all about learning how to hold the rifle into your body, and rolling with the kick. When you shoot it should feel like your entire body is moving back, not just the rifle. If not, you're doing it wrong.
>>31750560
The Mosin doesn't kick worth shit. I don't know where this comes from. The K31 is much worse as far as recoil goes.

Isn't this Angeles Crest?

It's like adding mass made the object more resistant to being displaced. I think you are onto something here OP. Further experimentation is neccesary to prove your theory.
Oh wait, looks like someone beat you to the punch by about three hundred and thirty years.

>Thinking the recoil of a 91/30 is bad
>>31755678
i don't get this...
when you hold the gun your body-weight is added to the guns weight. a scope should only change it insignificantly.
>Rifle designed to be shot by 5'4" malnourished peasant has too much recoil
>>31755799
Lol what?
Yea, so with your mass added, the gun doesn't fly backwards a few feet. It pushes into your shoulder and the whole thing+you included, does not move much vs. if it were just the gun.
>>31750560
I recognize that range, are you a Califag too?
>>31750560
Right handed? Pull the rifle into your shoulder with the right hand, the four fingers. Brace your body but let the recoil push your body back.
>>31755671
>>31750923
I wonder who's behind this post?
>>31753024
its really not. 15 ft lbs of recoil has been the defacto standard for max recoil comfort for over a 100 years. The nugget is right near that limit.
>>31755671
holy fuck
massively underrated post
another possible aspect is what youre seeing. its possible with iron sights, you cant see the target as well so you notice the recoil more. but with the scope (even if it is only 3.25x or whatever power it is) youre focusing down range.
im just spit balling and its a stretch but mental state is a big factor with shooting and performance in general
>>31750888
>it's surprising to me that 1-2 pounds did substantially change felt recoil,
Keep in mind how much the rifle itself weighs. 1-2 pounds isn't insignificant.

sides have entered orbit
>>31750923
Ignore Skelton posters
>>31750560
Pick up a shoulder pad/brace/stock sock. It'll lessen the felt recoil.
Also, are you shooting a 91/30 with the bayonet extended or retracted?
>>31755671
This is the best post I've seen in years.
>>31755671
>>31750560
weight of steel from scope mount will reduce recoil. more mass for recoil to move = less felt recoil
also maybe his bore is shot out and bullets leave at a lower pressure
>>31750923
yeah sure thing buddy.
You listen to me you spooky bastard, you can't shoot a gun without eyes and you ain't got no eyes do you?
Now fuck off back to graveyard land and leave us be.

You sound like a little girly man. YGSIU nigga.

>I would argue that my Remington 770 feels harder than a Mosin.
This. My Remington 700 feels harder than my nugget.
>>31763917
I had a Rem 700 with synthetic stock thatbI bought for cheap as shit used. It was .30-06 and kicked like a fucking mule because it didn't weigh anything.
Even with proper posture it would leave my shoulder bruised after 30 rounds.
