Welp

That can't be good

I thought A-10 Warthogs were unkillable?
>>
>>31746164
No confirmation?
The fact that their social media accounts aren't plastered with images of them jumping up and down like apes on the wing of a downed A-10 is plenty confirmation that they're talking out of their ass.
>>
>>31746300

Saudi handlers are probably trying to keep it as hush as possible until recovery teams can get their hands on the wreckage.
>>
>>31746672

Is there even anything classified on an A-10? That bird is ancient.
>>
>>31746164
>I thought A-10 Warthogs were unkillable?
Warthogs are one of the most vulnerable combat air-breathing aircraft in US inventory thanks to MANPADS. Were it not for the AC-130 they would be the straight most vulnerable.

Low and slow is dead, folks. The Iraqi Republican Guard proved that when it shot the A-10s to shit, we were lucky not to lose any pilots then.

That said I bet ISIS is just bullshitting.
>>
>>31746693
I would assume he means more to prevent political humiliation than to prevent some wunder waffle from falling into *'s hands.
>>
>>31746693

A-10 has been upgraded ever since they rolled out, they're not the exact same as they were in the 70s
>>
The government has denied this claim. I'd be inclined to beleive them on this one, as a service member did die today in an IED near Mosul, and they did admit that.
>>
>>31746695

>Warthogs are one of the most vulnerable combat air-breathing aircraft in US inventory thanks to MANPADS

Yeah cause the list of A-10's shot down by manpad's is super long. Oh wait, it's only 1 plane, exactly the same number of F-16's to lost to manpads.

Multi-million dollar (almost $19,000,000) aircraft? That's another story.

that's pocket change for the military.

the A-10 is a sturdy shitbucket but it's still old as fuck, one fell in Libya out of airframe wear IIRC
>>
Claimed video of shootdown

Very inconclusive

http://heavy.com/news/2016/10/isis-us-warplane-shot-down-propaganda-plane-syria-civil-war-a10-thunderbolt-warthog/
>>
I doubt they got one.
That said, it's absolutely retarded to use A10 against ISIS. They have MANPADs and the warthog is no good at high altitude. They're asking to lose one.
>>
>>31747792
It's not like MANPADs are an instant-kill against A-10s, especially older ones. Last year a flight of A-10s were fired on with 4 SA-7s and none were hit.

Plus modern A-10Cs have PGMs aided by targeting pods available to them, and can have significant stand-off capability.
>>
No, it would be all over the news by now.
>>
What'd they hit it with? I feel like it's a BF game situation where they fired a tank shell at it because fuck it.
>>
>>31746164
>I thought A-10 Warthogs were unkillable?
Ha, no. In Desert Storm they had the highest loss rate for how many flew. In one day the Republican Guard killed two, grounded ten, and had two left in the unit that could still fly with superficial damage, and F-16s took over.

The flight profile it was designed for was outdated less than 5 years after entering service, and to begin with it was only requested, designed, and selected to kill the AH-56 Cheyenne help.
>>
>see, this is why we need the F-35!!!!!
>>
>>31747972

F-16s suffered a ton of losses too.

A-10s are not deep strike fighters, it literally means nothing that they failed to perform that task. They're CAS/ground attack planes and this they do just fine.
>>
>>31746918
Eh, avionics upgrades and sniper pods to bring parity with fighters with better range, payload, and response times.
>>
>>31747970
they didn't hit at all.
>>
>happened like 14 hours ago
>Not a single video or picture

Fake
>>
>>31747998
For how many 16s versus 10s were flying Warthog losses were proportionately much larger.
>>
>>31748031

yeah but the point is, the IRG wasn't the kind of targets they should have been hitting, more SEAD was in order.

remember the A-10 was meant to hit advancing groups in defensive actions against an armored push rather than to fly into well defended places full of holed in enemies. That's what you use bombers and strike fighters for, planes like the F-15E, B-1B and F-111.
>>
>>31748079

*also, getting rid of the F-111 was the worst mistake the USAF has ever made, it was an extraordinary plane that could do literally everything we needed to do in Iraq and Afghanistan, huge payload, huge range, awesome speed.
>>
>>31748079
Right, but that's with great hindsight. At the time they thought it could do the job and got proven wrong, hard.
>>
>>31747602
>that video
So they filmed an A10 making a gun-run, and claim that the explosions and smoke caused by the gun are the plane crashing.
>>
>>31748106
Hello Carlo.
>>
>>31748123

well the mindset back then was that A-10s were supposed to all get rekt and never come back so they would never have to operate them again and look like the ground forces mattered to them.

1/4 projected survivability rate and all.
>>
>>31748143

Meg Carlo?
>>
>>31747005
>>31747040
>>31747120

The a-10 is my favorite aircraft of all time (CAS is sexy) but it has very real limitations.

He said it in a shitposting way, but seriously the a-10 was designed to take out as many ruskie tanks pushing through the fulda gap as possible before dying. It's vaunted survivability is less "it's invincible" and more "it might be able to get a pilot back to fly a few more missions after taking a near miss by a SAM".

Wish I still had the article that is specific about how bad it would have been but it was something along the lines of: after ww3 kicked off, a-10 squadrons would be greatly diminished in pilots and airframes within three days and basically written off in less than a week due to their attrition rate.
>>
>>31748292
It should be noted as well that early A-10 pilots hated that they got stuck in it instead of F-16s because of how poor the boring accuracy was.

Are you forgetting that Obama and Hillary gave them surface to air missiles to shoot down Assad's planes?

Poor bastard probably got blown out of the sky by an American made missile.
>>
>>31750791

A-10 has enough countermeasures to avoid even American made manpads
>>
>>31752331
Flares have a hard time countering missiles that can track negative UV changes. If your plane makes a dark spot in the sky as it flies, you are fucked.

>Are you forgetting that Obama and Hillary gave them surface to air missiles to shoot down Assad's planes?
I'm pretty sure that's bullshit. The US has only given TOWs to the rebels. There's a fear that giving MANPADS to rebels will lead to them falling into the hands of terrorists who will use it to shoot down a civilian airliner. They don't want a MH-17 type incident to happen with the blame on them after giving Russia shit for it
>>
>>31748292
I can't remember the exact article either but it was estimated that 2 weeks after ww3 that no A-10's would be left. Not that they're useless, because they'd fuck up everything they hit.
>>

Syria is russias butt bitch in the ME. All US needs to do is prop up certain rebels, bomb others and keep the place a mess. As long as Syria is crippled, so are russias ability to influence the region.
As things stand now the US is doing a VERY good job, it will be decades until syria is even close to functioning again. That's why russia is bringing everything they got down there.
>>
>>31755522
Crippling Syria means having Jihadists controlling Syria. That would mean Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Syria are all controlled by Islamist extremists. Congratulations, you've just increased Terrorist activity in the west by 50%.
>>
>>31755496
It's in Russia's interests to prevent it. Proxy wars are always just situations of telling the other side to go fuck itself.
>>
>>31754465
story?
>>
>>31755496
An important oil pipeline went up in Syria, Assad thought the US puppet strings were pulling just a bit too hard on his shoulders.

On a grander scale, Russia's withdrawl from the World Banking System and growing possibility that Russia and Poland may be the only two countries with any military power in the event of a European de-stabilization event means that the US and Israel want to let Russia know that we're not happy about having competitors.

Look at what happened with Ukraine.
>>
>>31755617
They had a fight on the runway.
The pilot was talking shit about the F-35
>>
>>31755558
Horseshit nigger. The Kurds could take the majority of the land area of Syria if they were so inclined.
>>
>>31755666
Nice try Satan, but that means Turkey invades Syria and Erdogan sets up an Islamist puppet. You and I know damn well the Turks will not let the Kurds have a state.
>>
>>31754465

I agree that it's a meme plane, it's really fucking cool, but it needs to be retired. That being said, I think a real replacement should be developed. I don't hate the 35 either, I just don't think it will be able to do as good of a job when it comes to CAS. Although, the F-35 is far less vulnerable and will deliver bombs and missiles just fine, so it should still do a pretty good job.
>>
>>31755617
It's a first responder training exercise.
>>
>>31755522

>As long as Syria is crippled, so are russias ability to influence the region

It`s not the only reason. Have you ever heard about Tajikistan? Uzbekistan? Azerbaijan? ISIS already have some training camps in this countries. If ISIS or "opposition" will dominate in Syria, kebabs will focus their attention on Russia and EU (and the last one is already cucked to the core).
>>
>>31756380
The upper five 'stans are to the war on terror what Laos was the Vietnam War.

That is, too isolated and shitty for either side to fight seriously for them.

Besides, Azerbaijan is an oil rich Shia state. You might as well tell me ISIS has camps in Iran.

>also, getting rid of the F-111 was the worst mistake the USAF has ever made, it was an extraordinary plane that could do literally everything we needed to do in Iraq and Afghanistan, huge payload, huge range, awesome speed.

1. When was there ever a situation in Iraq or Afghanistan that demanded the presence of an F-111?

2. The F-111 has greater range, speed, and payload compared to the F-15E, but all of this comes with a much higher operating cost and the F-111 completely lacks the F-15E's air-to-air capabilities. The Strike Eagle is simply a better option for the USAF.
>>
>>31748292
Wasn't those projected casualties more or less the same than those projected for tanks, helicopters, in fact any sort of combat vehicles in case of Fulda Gap / WW3 ?
