Ha, no. In Desert Storm they had the highest loss rate for how many flew. In one day the Republican Guard killed two, grounded ten, and had two left in the unit that could still fly with superficial damage, and F-16s took over.

The flight profile it was designed for was outdated less than 5 years after entering service, and to begin with it was only requested, designed, and selected to kill the AH-56 Cheyenne help.

The a-10 is my favorite aircraft of all time (CAS is sexy) but it has very real limitations.

It's vaunted survivability is less "it's invincible" and more "it might be able to get a pilot back to fly a few more missions after taking a near miss by a SAM".

Wish I still had the article that is specific about how bad it would have been but it was something along the lines of: after ww3 kicked off, a-10 squadrons would be greatly diminished in pilots and airframes within three days and basically written off in less than a week due to their attrition rate.

I don't hate the 35 either, I just don't think it will be able to do as good of a job when it comes to CAS. 1. When was there ever a situation in Iraq or Afghanistan that demanded the presence of an F-111?

2. The F-111 has greater range, speed, and payload compared to the F-15E, but all of this comes with a much higher operating cost and the F-111 completely lacks the F-15E's air-to-air capabilities. The Strike Eagle is simply a better option for the USAF.
