That's what legislators do about 95% of things though. Most of their decision-making comes down to the advice given to them by the strategists, consultants, researchers, and experts they employ/contract.

In fact, even in half the times they cite their own conscience, it's probably just their strategist who've crunched the numbers and informed the politician what their conscience thinks.

Plus, there's the whole Liberal party thing. As long as Howard is alive, every Liberal of note will be vehemently anti-gun, at least publicly. Maybe in a couple decades they might be able to come out of the closet/gun safe.
