Call an attorney. As long as your charge wasn't violent or drug related, a lot of times you can get your record sealed, and legally own firearms. But, NJ is one of the worst states for funs.

I know several people that have convictions, yet, own firearms. There are tons of ways to get them. Besides, the cops can't search your home without a warrant anyway. If you keep your nose clean, and don't go out in public with the thing, you should be fine regardless.
