Ground control is another thing to keep in mind. Genreally the easier ground is to dig through the more work you have to put into preventing ground falls. There are exceptions to this but as a general guide it's a good one.

The ground in OP'S pic looks like a bitch to dig through but appears stable and self supporting. I'd still want to timber the ribs and back for added stability because fighting tunnel.
