Beginner AR thread

I am a minimum wage slave. 8.50 an hour and all i can get for hours is a half shift because we're hiring so many people for the season atm.
Which means 30-40$ a day and my math suggests that i will have about 800$ extra spending cash after all my payments but i also really want to buy an AR.
I'm sick of being noguns and need to feel the satisfying kick against my shoulder again. i've tried to look and look and it seems like i can only find the Ruger 556 or the Smith and Wesson M&P sport 2.
Are there any other entry level ARs that /k/ might suggest?

Budget operator ya know
>>
Just wait a few months and save your monies, anon. Patience is a virtue.
>>
>>31725391
I would agree with this if a national election wasn't around the corner.
>>
>>31725363
You can't go wrong with the S&W or the Ruger. I really think those are the two best entry ARs. Don't overthink it. You can make changes or upgrade after you learn more about the rifle.
>>
>>31725430
The election is literally meaningless.
Lets just assume that some BS is coming. It will be a year before anything gets done, you have time.
>>
>>31725430
to be honest that's kind of the reason why i'm wanting the buy the gun now, instead of waiting.
>>
>>31725430
She's not gonna be able, nor likely attempt to pass gun legislation in mere months after the election. Price may be the only concern though, for the time being

I agree, i'm just paranoid something will fail and then money is wasted. I would rather buy a higher end part to replace it but i know that will rack up the bucks. So in that case i should just save for a better one maybe
>>
>>31725363

whatever you do, don't get a fucking M&P15...

Get an anderson lower (40-ish bux) and assemble the lower yourself. PSA makes reasonably priced uppers but avoid PTAC it's terrible
>>
>>31725465
not necessarily. the issue in the short term isnt legislation, its other gun buyers.
it happens time and time again, shit gets in a panic and all of a sudden everythings OOS. how long this upcoming panic will last? we'll see.
sometimes we are our own worst enemy.
OP, if an AR is what you want now, it might be a good idea ot buy a stripped or complete lower. $50-200 and you have the most important piece in hand.
>>
>>31725510
My only problem is milling out the lower, i have no idea how that process goes down
>>
>>31725489
Experts can correct me if I'm wrong but generally speaking (and I'm saying generally here so don't sperg out on me) the main reason to spend more money on an AR is the quality of the barrel. So don't worry about parts failing because you went budget on an AR.
>>
>>31725527
youre talking about an 80% lower. there are pros and cons to that but i was talking about a finished lower. like ready to drop in parts and go.
>>
>>31725609
oh
well that makes it a lot easier
>>
>>31725465

Clearly you don't remember 2012 when ARs were out of stock everywhere for 2 months and for the next 6 months after that when they finally came back there was a 50% markup on them.
>>
>>31725468
She was talking about using executive orders, and the demographics of the US are changing where I think the Democrats will stay in power for at least 3-4 more terms.

Im not risking it
>>
>>31725465
>>31725468
yeah I meant prices from a possible panic, not actual legal changes. though I guess you could wait until that dies down too, but then it's a question of how much longer would that be.
>>
>>31725618
definitely look into it. in a panic, stripped lowers and mags are the some of the first things to dry up. like i said, a minimum investment of $50 for an anderson lower is a good idea. a few magazines while youre at it too- like i mean literally buy them right now.
>>
My psa kit was cheap and good

Toss it on a spikes tactical lower or something cheap and you'll be in around 450
>>
>>31725618
I built mine out of a $40 Anderson lower.
Shipping and FFL fees included, it cost me about $480
>>
Are the PSA shills here yet?
>>
A sport ii was my first AR. It's a good all around choice.

You can also buy complete uppers and lowers and stick them on each other if you find something you like the look of better for about the same price.
>>
Ruger AR556 is probably a decent deal for what you actually need out of an AR. It's as cheap now as it's ever going to be and it's a decent build. Nothing special, but at least you do get a warranty.

Panic buying will drive prices up in the short term. Then it will eventually level out. If you want a hedge without blowing your bank account a stripped lower would be a better investment. If we see a repeat of the 1990s AW ban that lower would still count as a pre ban gun, and it wouldn't cost half as much.
If you want a complete, working gun NOW then the AR556 would be a more practical choice since it'll take a while once panic sets in for parts to come back in stock and for prices to drop.
>>
>>31725998
As >>31725650
Said the prices never fully recovered. The time to buy all the guns, ammo and accessories you ever wanted is NOW.
>>
Colt expanse M4, armalite eagle 15 or Ruger ar-556.

What should I choose? Going to drop a new barrel on it soon btw.

Dad and I bought the Ruger AR556 and S&W M&P15 Sport II at roughly the same time and I was able to do comparison. I bought the Smith for $625 and he bought the Ruger for $700 (I got lucky after shopping around and found a good sale). The Smith Sport II is a no frills AR that comes with a magpul rear sight and it works fantastic. The Ruger uses more proprietary parts and a wierd plastic screw on Delta ring along with a proprietary rear sight, and proprietary front sight. I ended up dumping more money into my Smith and set it up perfectly. It has roughly 1000 rounds through it in the 6 months I've had it with no sign of stopping anytime soon. If you cannot build your own AR due to age like me or want to learn more from an entry level AR the Sport II is perfect.

What's the opinion on DPMS Oracles? My local big chain hunting store has some on sale for $585. I'm debating between the DMPS , a CETME at an lgs for $600, and a century imported AK n-pap for $699.
>>
>>31725697
literally the best info you can get. Buy a lower and at a very minimum 3 mags. Also if you have any Army/Marine friends who have deployed, ask them to hook you up with some of their old mags. But seriously but a fucking stripped lower ASAP. There are already folks like myself who are buying multiple to take advantage of no guns when the panic actually happens. The market is still low but it's about to skyrocket. Buy a fucking lower, 2 if you can.
>>
>>31726420
about as good as any other entry level rifle. no front sight post/ railed gas block is a big negative to me though. the reason being, a front sight post can be used or cut down to fit under a rail. a railed gas block has to be replaced or purchase a front sight. and its ugly.
>>
>>31726220
fucked if I know, probably something about it being the best rifle ever
>>
>>31725391

What if OP is from California? Huh? Bet you didn't think of that.
>>
>>31725363
At the end of the day buy what you think is cool.

M&P sport is great, Ruger is great. Just buy what you want to shoot, don't overbudget on the rifle because ammo is fairly expensive and you'll want to shoot the shit out of your rifle.

Also, keep in mind that building a rifle can be incredibly easy too, and if you're super poofag, you can grab some no name lower for like $150 bucks and build your own.

tl;dr
Get the smith, it's what I want next.

>>
i dont understand how im supposed to turn a receiver into a gun in any reasonable amount of time or at all in fact
>>
>>31725363
I've worked at an FFL for several years and do most of the basic gunsmithing and parts replacement. I've had 3 Ruger ARs come back to us just days/weeks after we sold them, their use of marked UTG parts gives me a bad taste, but worse is that two of them shipped from the factory without all the pins/springs installed in the lower, and I know it wasn't due to Bubba because the guys who bought them were the older type who thought there was something mystical about taking down, cleaning and repairing/modifying a firearm.

The last one that came in had to be sent back to Ruger because they didn't cut the chamber right and rounds would just get stuck when you dropped the bolt. Never figured out how that made it out of the factory, but then again this was shortly after the Sandy Hook panic

That said, the Smith sporter has never really impressed me much but at least they don't use funky parts.
>>
>>31728571
The receiver is the "gun" in the eyes of the law.

Get receiver

At your leisure get parts, and assemble your rifle. Parts fit together like Legos. You shouldn't need files, hammers, or really even sandpaper. Just shove it together, insert the pin that holds the part. Do this until you have all of the parts.

Presto working rifle!

Just Google beginners AR assembly. (do not substitute build, for assembly)

Watch the video, then do that stuff.

The prices for a lot of the guns on this list have gone up substantially.

My suggestion is to lurk pawn shops and local gun shops for great used guns. Make a list of the shit you like and do research, then go back and buy the thing.

You can build your own AR for a few hundred dollars and some patience.

Quick question from someone building their first AR.

What is the consensus on Del-Ton uppers?
>>
>>31729209

$700 or so
>Norinco M1911, Hi Power, CZ75, or P226
$350
>Norinco SKS or TT33
$200
>Norinco M1A
$450 or so

>Can probably get all these for lower prices by getting them used on CGN

I fail to see the issue. Though I should state that the last time I checked firearm prices, it was 2011-13 or so. Surely prices haven't changed much in 3-5 years, considering Canada STILL imports firearms/ammo from Russia and China. Also, $300-350 SVT40s FTW
>>
>>31729604
Then there's QBZ-97, Tavor, and CZ-858... quite a nice variety and selection, in spite of AK and FAL being prohibited by name.
>>
I bought a psa complete lower for 150, and a 16in keymod upper for 300. Bcg and charging handle was 100.
Total price was $550, no optics or sights. I went with a $300 vortex scope and ~$50 mount. Grand total $900.
If you get a cheaper upper, that includes front sight, you can buy a rear sight for anywhere between $25-60.
Your grand total will be ~$600 or less.
Good luck anon.

Dont know. Truth be told, there are accounts here and elsewhere that they're not as horrible as everyone blows it out to be, then again not everyone has one to really know.
But do realize that the heart and soul of an AR is the barrel, BCG, and trigger. So people usually perk their ears up when they see CHF and FN barrels (which are PSA's premium selection).
>>
>>31726392
Right because a PTAC upper assembly is the same thing is a PSA premium upper assembly with a CHF barrel made by FN, just with different markings...

Bought this 4 days ago. Rifle $650, cheap reflex sight Eotech clone $100. I've only got 100 rounds through it but it's worked like a charm and I've read plenty of reviews from guys saying they have put a couple thousand through it and it just works.

Can even own pistols and short-barrel rifles at 18 years old. Can't carry them legally, no, but you CAN own them at 18 years old.
>>
>>31729209
Norinco stuff is better than people think

I've put 1000 rounds through mine without a single failure.

The gun is more accurate than I am right now, but with a 2x red dot I've shot >2 MOA groups at 100 yards. I'm still learning, and I'm 100% sure that somebody more experienced than I would get much better groups
>>
>>31731077
You can also own pistols and sbr, sbs, suppressors, and full autos in America at 18.
You can also carry all of them.
>>
>>31731704
That was supposed to be <2. Less than 2 MOA groups
>>
>>31731722
The point he was making is in Canada I don't need a $200 tax stamp for each one of those. And theyll ship to my door
>>
>>31731736
With a nice pinned mag and after getting a license saying you can even own guns sure. And that only applies to sbs and sbr that are factory made. No suppressors for Canada not sure about autos I figure you have little to none in the same way we do.

If I wanted a license no stamps I would get and FFL SOT.

Yes, BUT.... as long as you know how to stalk a website (and from the sounds of it, working only half-shifts, you have time to do this), you can still snag a rifle or two. Even during the height of the 2013 panic, there were still boxes of .22lr at 5 cents a round to be had, there were still AR-15's for fair prices to be had. And production of black rifles is much higher now than it was then. There are more companies making AR's now.

I don't know if I'm just a little bitch but even though the recoil doesn't feel bad while shooting, my shoulder will still be kinda sore an hour or so after shooting a bunch from my AR-15. Although I find it usually happens when I'm shooting from a bench, I don't feel sore if I mostly shoot standing
