Just saw this, RMA Armament just released a line of NIJ IV standalone rifle plates that weigh only 4.4 lbs and cost only $400 each. With the weight of body armor dropping this much, is it possible that we'll start seeing the average soldier having more armor coverage than they currently do?

How many hits from standard 7.62 NATO ball can it take?

An NIJ III rating requires a plate to stop at least 6 rounds of 7.62 NATO ball. An NIJ IV rating requires the plate to stop 1 round of .30-06 M2 AP in addition to the NIJ III requirements.

>NIJ IV standalone rifle plates that weigh only 4.4 lbs
>current ESAPI plates weigh 5.5 lbs and require a kevlar backer that adds another 1 lb or so
>these new plates could allow for 50% more coverage for the same weight, or 60% more coverage if the improved coverage involves replacing kevlar panels with plates
