Not sure if this is the right board, fyi in advance...
Anyone know of some good resources to learn lockpicking? Not sure I want to order a kit off Amazon, but we might be at the point where the "lists" don't matter anymore.
Thoughts?
ask /diy/
or get into locksmithing
But /diy/ is your best bet

Get a pic kit and work on one of your doors, or a spare doorknob. (attach it to a block of wood, cutter kits at lowes/home depot for $20)
watch youtube videos to learn basic technique
the key (lol) to getting good at picking is using the right pressure on your tension wrench
and once youve gotten a few different locks picked and feel confident with your ability
get a pick gun because its a billion times easier/faster
$50 for a good one (google locksmith pickgun)
dont get pulled over and let them find your kit you can get arrested for it.
good luck

>the key (lol) to getting good at picking is using the right pressure on your tension wrench
This. You'll feel the tumblers stay up if you're doing it right. Once you get that down you can just rake it in a handful of seconds on 95% of locks.
>>31717354
Thanks for info, posted this on /diy/ but figured /k/ would have some overlapping expertise.
I was recently embarassed by a crappy padlock and stuck in a park for half a night. We had to walk home and get the car in the morning. I'd rather not repeat the humiliation.
>>31717317
I've been watching a whole lot of bosnianbill's stuff.
>>31717354
>dont get pulled over and let them find your kit you can get arrested for it.
Really? What do they charge you with? Conspiracy to commit a crime?
>>31717493
it's not that having a lock pick is in itself a crime
but having it on in the commission of a crime will put you in more shit that you were before
If you can order it from amazon you're not an American.
If you're not an American you're noguns.
I'd you're noguns you're not /k/ related.
QED yer a fegget
it's hard as fuck
learning to force a lock with a lever/shims is easy and i'd recommend it
but tension wrench and pick is seriously hard, don't expect to just be able to do it in a few days or weeks
I never got passed jiggling three pins open

Dude cmon now
Lockpicking is stupidly simple to learn as long as you have the right lock to start on. Watch Bosnianbill's vids on youtube if you are interested, he has a pretty good series of vids on beginning.
with casual picking you can usually learn to pick a lock over 2 or 3 days.

Emphasis on >learn
I started picking after bingeing on his videos.
I still haven't been able to successfully rake any of the three locks that I have bought (2 Masterlocks and a ML ripoff), but I started with single pin picking and have been able to pick two with occasional success and one with high success. Not sure what it is about raking that's making it so difficult when I've been able to pick the pins which he says is more difficult.

Nice get OP
Anyway, buy a cheap set, go easy on them. You can sometimes find lock picks at gun shows.
Started it as a hobby when i was 17, ended up with a job as a locksmith by 19 all from dicking around with old locks and learning shit from youtube. Do not think picking will automatically land you a job as a locksmith. picking jobs are about 10% of the work unless you find a retard-ran property management company like I did that ALWAYS lost keys.
also dont get into the hype o bump keys and pick guns.
No longer a locksmith buy still carry my pocket pick set on a daily. has saved my ass a few times.
even without looking for work, picking is a neat skill to learn
>>31717728
I don't follow.
I am an American but I can order just about anything from Amazon.
>>31718389
Not actual lockpicks.
>>31718442
Sure as fuck where I got my set from.
Not sure what hellhole state you live in.
>>31718490

You are retarded. Post a link. Maybe they do sell them now, but they sure as shit avoided them like the plague when I first started.

>some several hours frustration
>generous helpings of breaks and time away (very important for fingaztipz)
>toss in a helping of enlightenment
>a dash of luckerish (ok to substitute skill here)
and voila, opened two disc locks, a Master Lock and a Public Storage branded.
>tfw watching someone open MasterCombo padlock (aka worthless pos) in <5sec. 8-O
The vid where he bypasses a Master combo padlock had me droppin nearly four Bennies on four new pick-resistant padlocks for my business. Highly recommend checking him out.

>>31717317
youtube has a lot of great vids explaining the basics of different types of locks.
>>31717354
Depends on the state. In based michigan we're allowed to carry lockpicks, so long as we don't have "criminal intent"- basically, don't get caught niggering around with other people's locks.
>lockpicking
>feasible
Pick one. Or you're american, I guess, in which case your locks are shit and you can pick both.
>>31717317
I do lock picking OP, there is a book from some dude from a I hack charities website. It's good to read on the basics. You can order some starter stuff from toool and some basic locks to practice.
>>31718875
>only American locks are shit
Wew lad
There are very few locks that can't be picked. it's the better alturnative to bolt cutters or a saw if noise is an issue.
That said, it's usually just easy to use bolt cutters or a saw.
>>31718894
pluus these are easy to carry in a pocket or in a pouch.
>>31718901
While I can't say picking the most common lock in here (abloy classic) is impossible, it's unfeasibly slow and you really need a decoder to have a reasonable chance of success.
lockpicking is not useful outside of a professional capacity (i.e. unlocking people's doors as a locksmith so they can get their keys they locked inside) because it takes so long. may as well just kick the door open, since most doors are weaker than the locks on them
> Not having two lockpics at the end of your legs.
But in all seriousness lockpicking can be really fun if you have the patience.
Order a set off of picks off of Amazon or somewhere, order some padlocks and get some practice in.

I used to dick around with it in high school to kill time and it came in handy a few times, as did learning various way of bypassing locks rather than picking them. Really should have given the hobby some real effort
