What brand of 9mm ammo is the best for CCW?
>inb4 glaser saftey slugs
Federal HST, end of discussion.
The ones that fit?
Believe it or not Remington Golden Saber is the ONLY non shit remington product.

>>31712325
I don't own a 9mm, but I concur about Gold Dot being the world standard for defensive ammo.
>>31712325
I used to carry gold dot, it's a great round. But HST overall offers better, more consistent expansion. Gold Dot is superior if you need barrier penetration thru glass since it's bonded. Otherwise, HST is a better all-around choice.
>>31712291
this. and remember, when you explode a gun it's the gun manufacturers shortcomings that caused it.

I'm a huge fan 124gr:
Speer Gold Dot
Federal HST (not Hydrashock)
Ranger SXT (supposed to be LEO only so hard to find)
and finally I'm a big fan of SIG ammo.
Why do I like SIG ammo? For starters they're the only readily available brand of 10mm that isn't watered down. They're 10mm is like 1250fps vs. 1180fps, something like 100 ft/lbs more than Hornday, both 180gr.
They load their full metal jacket "target ammo" to the same charge as their hollow point defensive rounds.
As for their 9mm, the 115gr sig is a little weak but the 124gr is 443 ft/lbs, that's big.
One word of caution, the SIG hollow points have a large opening and doesn't feed well in guns that are picky about ammo. Glock, Steyr and of course SIGs feed it perfectly though.
Oh, and a 20 round box of HST retails for $22 where the SIG ammo is $16.
So Gold Dot, Ranger SXT, Federal HST or SIG ammo are all great. I guess PDX is alright too.
Truthfully, you could probably carry Winchester White Box hollow points and likely work as well. So, like whatever man. I'm just telling you what I like.
>>31712219
Bought my first handgun (glock 19) a week ago at the scottsdale gun club. Guy told me to buy these to use for self defense. Just took his word for it.
>>31712419
Can't wait to reload for mine. I've got everything but the dies and the lead and tin. You use pure lead or an alloy?
>>31713816
I use zombie maxx. As far as I've been able to figure they're basically the same thing and you can save a couple bucks a box
>>31713898
Only difference is the casing is brass and not nickle coated. I run zombie max in my spare mag and crit. Defence in my main. You know just in case some crazy zombies happen
>Hornady
I pressed some of the local shops why that's all they carry and finally talked to a shop owner who told me they were the only supplier who consistently filled orders.
Near where I live:
>Dick's
>Field and Stream
>Shoot Point Blank Range
>Miami Valley Armory
>Underwood Guns
None of them have Gold Dot, HST, or PDX but they carry Hornady out the ass.
>>31712245
I bought 147 gr HST for my m&p9, but on the case they say micro. Is that going to affect much for me out of a 4.25 inch barrel?
>>31714055
I wonder this too for a glock 19

I spent $27 on next day air from Midwayusa on Thursday afternoon and got my package Monday night, at the end of the day.
Fuck their "nitro" shipping.
Also I said, "readily availalbe", that stuff isn't in the local gun shops AND
Federal
>180gr, 1,275fps, $29 for 20 rounds.
SIG
>180gr, 1,250fps, $29 for 50 rounds (and I can pick it up at several local stores.)
>>31714182
Weird, my stores are packed with Federal Premium Vital-Shok (including the 10mm) and only carry Sig in 9mm/.45
Varies based on your local store or their distributor then.
>>31714151
Well, I can't argue with that.
>>31714055
To anyone buying 147gr bullet, don't. Unless you're running suppressed. They're a subsonic round that really only makes sense in a suppressed platform. Otherwise, 124gr is just the way to go.
>>31714217
If I found HST in any other grain I would have gotten them, but I figured neutered HST was better than no HST when I got it. Is it worth trusting my life with until I get 124 grain?
>>31714279
Yeah it's fine.
There's a very old debate, as old as any caliber arguments about whether or not fast and light is better than heavy and slow.
You definitely bought heavy and slow. For me, I want fast but not too light, enough weight for good penetration. I think 124gr is best in 9mm.
Your 147gr will kill someone just fine.
>>31714217
>They're a subsonic round that really only makes sense in a suppressed platform. Otherwise, 124gr is just the way to go.
Nope. Those bare gel results could be a lot better for 124 and 124 +P
>>31714279
You'll be okay.
>>31714498
It looks like the 3rd from the bottom and the bottom are the 2 best. Biggest expansion and adequate penetration.

>>31712340
I own a 9mm and concur about Gold Dot being the American standard for defensive ammo.
>>31712524
Feel free to buy whatever you want, but is anyone seriously thing that hollow points are going to make a difference in any scenario at all? It'd be much smarter to cc with whatever you plink with or subsonic rounds so you can keep your hearing after firing without earpro.
>>31714498
So according to this picture the 2 best are 124gr IMO.
Also consider that lighter bullets recoil less and operate at much lower pressure. You drive the pressure of the round up more by increasing bullet weight than you do by increasing velocity, to a point. The lighter rounds are easier to shoot and easier on the gun and safer if you're hand loading. They have a lot of advantages. In fact you only want enough mass to assure adequate penetration, beyond that everything should be put into velocity, meaning lighter bullets. I'm most comfortable with 124gr 9mm, which btw, are also lighter to carry around. If you carry a spare mag in a duty size gun, that maybe 35 rounds, the weight isn't enough to make a huge difference but it is in other guns. Lug 6 mags of AK-47 ammo and 6 mags of AR ammo around for a day and I promise you'll appreciate the lighter weight.
Now, I will say something nice about heavier bullets, they're quieter.
>>31714625
Everyone makes jokes, but...
>>31714691
I really respect a 1911 in .45.
I mean look how thin that gun is for that round, like seriously. It's the only gun I'd ever own in .45.
>>31712219
Depends on your criteria for "the best"
I carry 147gr fmj 9mm because it's the best for what I want, but that doesn't go for everyone.

HSTs, Gold Dots (especially the Underwood 124+p), and extreme defenders are good.
The LeHigh defenders and penetrators perform well, and not just in ballistics gel. They won't cavitate like a hollowpoint but they also won't underpenetrate.
Personally I'd say save the penetrators for 380, since they outperform ball ammo, but for 9mm stick with 147gr HSTs or 124 GD +p.
Hornady critical
Golden saber
>>31714217
147gr HSTs perform better than 124gr anything if your barrel is less than 4 inches. The differences are marginal, but still there, so if you want the best go with that.

That's what they get for marketing it with the name "R.I.P." instead of something more tame like "Defense" or "Protection."
