What does /k/ wear when the cold times hit? I realized I don't have a good outdoor coat, what are some recommendations for both utility and style? I seem to remember there was a thread about this a little bit ago
>>
Old air force jacket, passed down from my grandpa. C O Z Y
>>
Buy surplus otherwise you might be spending way to much
>>
>>31705554
that jacket doesnot insulate well at all. great storage though, and you can always spray waterproof it and pair with a sweatshirt or flannel for mild weather
>>
tacticool fleeces and softshells
the exact opposite of style (unless that style is tacticool) but they work very, very well

in all seriousness all you need is something made with a good material that retains warmth while blocking wind, rain, and snow. anything made with polartec, goretex, schoeller fabrics among others should work pretty well.
>>
>>31705554
I have that exact jacket, and >>31705669
is right. It's literally just a cotton, with a thin liner. I always wear it with a hoodie or something. Only in the summer nights would I wear that as is. Keep in mind it's Old Navy.
>>
>>31705669
It was just an example, do you have any recommendations for a good military jacket like that that actually will keep me warm? I remember seeing a bunch of guys raving about a cheap surplus jacket from WW2 that was standard issue

Where are you located? If you need something massive and thick for serious shit cold (-25F and worse) I'd suggest either a wool greatcoat or something like the Yugoslav parka. Basically if the coat is so thick that it can stand up by itself you'll be OK.

Thinking of picking up a Czech M85 parka, they go for only around $20, they look good, and I've heard they're pretty comfy and durable. I'll probably be getting one regardless since they're cheap as hell, but does anyone on here own one to confirm?

Really c o s y and absolutely tonnes of zipper space, you'd be pretty amazed at how much you can fit in.
Only downside is that the first few times using the main zip is tough (needs breaking in) and the velcro is a bit 'meh'.
Solid 9/10 jacket for the price though.

It depends on what you'll be doing in the coat, but for every day wear, get a Navy pea coat, the 32oz wool variety. I'd be extremely wary of buying one from a surplus store; as most are made of cheap materials and are poorly constructed. I made that mistake; picked one up for about 50 dollars, and within a season all it was good for was a chore coat whilst I shoveled the snow and whatnot. The tall collar will protect your neck and the back of your head against the wind and cold, the weight is impervious to winter weather, it looks decent and fashionable enough to keep people from thinking you're a hobo, and wool is a material that doesn't lose its insulative properties, even when soaked. If you need a coat for innawoodsing, find something with gore-tex.

I have one, bought it used for £10, took it to a tailor to get the length shortened (comes to about mid thigh normally, got it to just below belt level) and had the width/belt narrowed as well for a tighter fit. Warmest jacket I've ever had and looks better than it normal, which made me look slightly autistic before, especially when it was buttoned to the top.
>>
I've got this weird Israeli surplus jacket that I wear all the time. Very similar to a US M51 but different in a lot of ways. I've only ever seen one, the one I have, and I got it on ebay for 15 dollars. Best jacket I own

now, if it's REAL cold I might wear my pleather bomber jacket

and if it's REALLY REALLY cold I wear a shitty hoodie underneath the pleather jacket

That's not a good model to represent how it will look on him, though. The model is wearing one that's probably two sizes too large for him. Look how far it puffs out in the belly, and he's got the sleeves rolled up to fit to his teeny hands

Jackets that come to mid thigh are based. Overcoats are based too, but if you're going to wear an overcoat/trenchcoat, it's got to be a london fog type one, not a 'badass' one, and you've got to be at least in your late twenties or you'll look like a dweeb.

The benefits can't be denied though. It's like wearing a big comfy blanket all day. Keeps your legs/thighs warm too.

I alternate between just a light cotton jacket layered up with hoodies and long johns and a plain black london fog overcoat. If I wear the overcoat, I dress a little nicer underneath to kinda let people know I'm not a pedo or whatever. Always unbotton it when you go indoors. Don't be that guy.

And again don't even TRY the overcoat thing unless you are somewhere near the big 3-0. This is super important. Youngins' just look silly in them.

I got a coat like this from Duluth trading. I had a 20% off coupon on top of the clearance price.
It's warm and lots of pockets so I'm happy with it.
>>
>>31706145
I picked up two of them because I have this autistic habit of wanting to have at least two of everything so I always have a backup that will more than likely never be worn. They're very warm but they're just a little too autistic looking for me to wear them out of the house I think.

I've got a very small milsurp collection and I don't know why. I'll never wear any of it and I would have been much better served just buying more ammo with the money. I guess I just saw how cheap you can get nice quality shit and just bought it.

On the bright side now I have two surplus Danish helmets from the 50s that are in basically brand new condition for SHTF. Those are much more likely to come in handy than 6 flecktarn shirts lel.
>>
>>31705753
You really need the stash and glasses to pull that one off. Also wear nothing under it.

>>31705554
Arcteryx alpha or beta hardshell over an atom or cerium jacket. silk or merino base layer.
>>
>>31707259

Why is /k/ so insecure about how it looks? The best people in life are the ones that give no fucks at all. It only looks weird if you look nervous/sketchy/not confident while you're out.

I gurantee you nobody actually gives a shit if you aren't wearing this season's coolest fad.

>>
>>31705554
I have a jacket with that style but much heavier and it keeps me warm in a WI winter. Unfortunately I got it as a gift (from target I think) but the brand (sonoma) does not have a website and seems like it is just sold through other stores. So you might want to check the target website
>>
>>31706988
I automatically associate those with stale cigarette funk now.
>>
>>31707414

Not me, but they're the same condition you'd find everywhere else, it's luck of the draw. Mine was unissued.

*NOTE* This this is worthless without the liner in the wintertime. The parka itself is great at keeping the wind out but shit for insulation. Buy the liner. You can get them for $15.

I got caught in a Colorado blizzard while traveling with my parka and I was warm, toasty & comfy the entire time.

google showed nothing than I noticed the crowns on the buttons fug me WWII 1941 made in Sweden the coat has two other large pockets on the back and the armpits are not wool but cotton nylon mix which I'm worried now they might get really moist

North Face fleece hoodie I've had since I was a teenager or a Carhartt with the Sherpa lining. We don't get snow, so it's okay. If it's frosty out, I might wear long underwear. Just depends. When I'm at home on cold days, I just wear a cheap hoodie and pajama bottoms or my kigu. It's a pink sheep.
>>
>>31708285
You lucky bastard. Btw. the armpits are likely made to be more breathable and let the sweat out. The swedes probably found it better and your armpits aren't really exposed, so it shouldn't be a problem.

A couple years back, I was working a job that required I do manual labor outside. I ended up buying their windproof fleece. It's not super thick, just two layers of fleece. That jacket was warm enough for me to be comfortable down to 10 degrees with just a t-shirt underneath. I wore it down to the negatives (before windchill) with just another thin fleece under it.
I love it. Didn't really notice any wear or damage on it at the end of winter.

Have an old surplus BDU M65 that I wear when I'm not too concerned about appearances. Cozy as hell, but it was used when I got it and five more years of wear and tear means I need to replace the velcro and redo the waterproofing . Definitely showing a little wear now.

Works more than fine for me. I'm a plumber, so what ever I wear gets torn up, I find that Carhartt tends to be the most resistant to that.... Even when it does get a hole in it, it takes forever for that hole to spread to the point that I can no longer use it.

So go fuck yourself faggot. It's the brand to go to when you're in a trade, pretty much every electrician, plumber, etc that I've met, wears it.

They do make water resistant, wind proof...pretty much every thing you bad mouth about, they have one for it.

120 is not even that much. My work boots alone are a couple hundred. You're just a poor fag is all.

An M65 won't blow you're mind- it's double layer poly/cotton mix, but it wears well and with the liner it's fairly warm and quite versatile. There are versions in woodland and UCP which both look like shit but can be dyed. German/UK woolly pullly/commando sweaters are cheap and layer well.

Otherwise, if you want the military look and are willing to spend money, Alpha Industries also produces a variety of modernized versions of flight and bomber jackets- they're not cheap by any means, but they are very nice, and there's a variety of options available.

I wear either a black or dark blue wool coat when it's very cold, or a lightweight grey or black Columbia jacket if it's cool and rainy.

I don't wear surplus or stuff designed to make it look military because I'm not an autist.

Enjoy people thinking you're a school shooter.

Go outside more often. Get some sun. Work out and maintain a healthy weight. Socialize. Doing these things and being a responsible, attractive, sociable and approachable gun-owner instead of a weirdo everyone worries might snap some day will do more for our gun rights than a thousand petitions or NRA memberships ever will.

I have this 80s made Puritan brand fleece lined camo coat that I normally wear.

Oddly enough though, my 100% polyester robe and pajama pants are warmer. Couple winters back I was outside with nothing apart from those pajama pants and the robe (apart from my tshirt, socks, and shoes) and they kept me warmer in the snow than my actual outdoor clothing.

Faded Glory makes some comfy shit.

Can anyone vouch for the Brandit or Mil-Tec M65 jackets? I hear these are both made in Ireland or something.

I already own an authentic issue one, and it looks great, but I want a second one in rotation.

I would reccomend the M1943 field jacket w/ liner, and M43 cap, which is sort of like pic related.

No joke, that shit is the warmest you can dress for less than $40. If you wear some long underwear at the same time, you will actually stop registering that it is cold outside until you go into a heated building and immediaty begin to die of heatstroke.

Canadian military here where its cold af.
All you need, I'll start from the bottom up:

GOOD wool socks, several pairs, if you wanna double up or extras to keep around. Think thick snugpak, 5.11, wigwam, something like that.

Goretex waterproof boots, or an overboot such as neos.

A GOOD thermal base layer, I wear high rated under armor ones instead of the issued kit.

Goretex wind or ice pants to repel water. Something that cinches at the ankle. Heavier for colder weather.

Thermal top, same as bottoms.

A second layer, I wear a "puffy" the snugpak elite jacket..

A goretex jacket on the outside. I usually wear a rain jacket, even in the winter.

A good pair of winter gloves, with a liner ( so 2 pairs). Its tricky to find good ones, snugpak again are good.

A toque, a balaclava and a neck gaiter or scarf.

The above layering keeps me warm even in up to -30 C soaking wet.

If you wanna get warmer, IE arctic conditions, all you gotta do is throw on a fleece top and bottoms, maybe parka top/bottoms.

The trick is layering. Constantly adjusting your layering to reduce overheating. A rule of thumb a pathfinder taught me is you should always have a "chill", and when youre working take a bit off cus your body heats up - but to be honest the above shit up to -30 I mentioned I wear when working hard and in stationary positions.

Lightweight, water and wind proof, keeps me warm. Layering this with another thicker shirt and an icebreaker is perfect.

If not this, than a kickass denim jacket with the same under layers.

C o m f y as it gets, warmer than Lucifer's taint, and holy shit are they durable. My grandfather has had the same one since the early 90s. He's a mechanic and hunts, and it gets worn all the time. Yet it's completely fine, save for a few oil stains on it. Best part is, a lot of Carhartts looks really nice; I live in a rural area and they're acceptable as formal wear for the most part.

>>
>>31745977
No pics. I just dress totally normal with it. My usual rule with military clothing is only 1 piece per ensemble, so that jacket would be the only military style clothing I'd wear that day.

It looks good with a nice pair of blue jeans, a flannel, nice sweater, and looks dope af with a scarf.

Ok sweet, I have a swedish tunic with Heer insignia, might think about pulling off the eagle and giving that a go.

Do you wear it with brown dessert boots? or sneakers?
>>
>>31746697
I used to have a Swedish wool tunic as well, haha.

I don't know about desert boots, unless you're talking about those crepe sole chukka boots, then yes. I don't wear tennis shoes unless I'm wearing shorts, so I dunno there. I have a pair of really beat up old Redwings that are A E S T H E T I C, that I wear basically every day.

I wear a Beyond PCU level 5 jacket with a DriFire 1/4 zip heavyweight sweater as an insulating layer. Really nice combination that is adequate for most of the cold weather we have around here. I've never really had to wash the sweater either since it's antimicrobial. I've done mile runs in it and have had it soaked with sweat and it still smelled like it did when it came out of the bag (still wash it anyways).

M65 with a wool or quilted liner. If you want extra water resistance, wax it.

Remember, a single poofy coat isn't really a good idea, you should have a wind/water barrier, and 2-3 layers of insulation for freezing temps, that way if you get overheated you can remove layers progressively to avoid sweating.

Good fabrics for insulation are wool, some silk fabrics, and some synthetics (though I prefer wool overall, especially merino wool). Avoid cotton unless you are waxing it.
>>
>>31746526
how many pockets does it have
>>
>>31706764
That's a great point, though; get your clothes tailored, especially if they're surplus, or you will look like a neckbeard swimming in fabric.

Remember, the man wears the clothes, the clothes should not wear him.

They're big enough. But as the Germans learned during Operation Typhoon, just a field tunic isn't that warm for extended periods.

I wear mine because it's just warm enough when I wear a hoodie or sweater underneath, and it's /fa/ as hell.

I suspect it would work in winter when youre going for a more rugged up look.

I wear an old military surplus jacket in Woodland Camo. No idea where it came from, my dad was just tossing out old hunting camo one day and asked if I wanted it. It's a bit big on me, but shit is it warm with the liner in. There's a draw string on the bottom you can use to seal it to your waist, keeps the heat in just fine. Too bad some fucker obliterated the zip-in (not-so-waterproof-anymore) hood.
>>
>>31751422
Naw, a comparatively thin WWII jacket is definitely not suited to what you're doing in that case.

Just get a big puffy jacket or one of those other normie coats that work well in the legit cold.
>>
>>31751348
I sort of don't wear milsurp either, but I do at the same time: I just have a rule for myself that only allows 1 piece of milsurp clothing per outfit, including the jacket.

Keeps me from looking like an autist or mass shooter, maybe both.
