This is why I liked the concept of Sniper Ghost Warrior, rl bullets at longer ranges drop and fall unlike guns in games being hitscan. Reticles in scopes should help you compensate for bullet drop.

I forget the theory behind the bottom left one, but the bottom right ones principle is you line up your targets height within one of those numbered lines (feet at that long baseline) and that's supposed to give the shooter some aid in distance approximation

The reticle you posted is the MSR. It's commonly used in S&B and Steiner scopes (amongst others).

It's unlikely that the game implements it correctly, but the reticle is designed to make it easy to find hold over and judge distances.

They're rangefinders. You put a known object's length (like a person) into them and it tells you how far away they are, which then corresponds to which dot below the centerpoint you use.

Of course in nearly all FPS games it's just aesthetics because they like to use hitscan projectiles, which makes it pointless.

I'll explain how to use that specific scope since its BF4.

That means aim the crosshair slightly above/below the target if it's closer/further than the base 100 distance

From 500+ metres, you hold above by 1 large line per 100 metres past 500. Or down 1 large line per 100 metres if you're zero'd to 1000 metres.

I'd explain how to account for elevation and moving targets, but I'm too tired and it's way too long. Just git good and get a feel for it.

The actual art of sniping is that the bullet won't usually go right where you point the middle of the crosshairs. Bullets are influenced by range and wind speed which means in reality it would be used to help determine where the enemy should be in your scope. At the range shown you would have to aim higher than the middle but nobody wants that in a video game so they just make it unrealistic.
